• Wizards War Updated to Version 1.1.0

• What's My Word? Released - June 3
The folks at Vintru, LLC who brought you Roll Through the Ages are back with a new release: What's My Word?. What's My Word? is an iOS Universal implementation of the classic word game designed by Joli Quentin Kansil where you attempt to discover a game word by using guess words with letters that not only appear in the game word, but that also fall in matching position.

The app has been priced at $0.99 and offers additional word packs as in app purchases.

• Kard Combat Released in Canada - June 3
Hothead Games has released Kard Combat in the Canadian App Store as an iOS Universal app for free. Kard Combat is another dueling-mage card game ala Magic: The Gathering. In fact, Hothead features an endorsement from none other than MtG's Richard Garfield who has this to say about Kard Combat:

Quote:
“For years I’ve wanted to create Magic-like experiences for people who play video games. Kard Combat on iPhone and iPad does this and is simple enough for anyone to pick up and play, but with plenty of depth for the hardcore player. Hothead has definitely created a truly magical game."

One question: Why just Canada?

• A Few iOS Board Game Developers Make The Develop 100 - June 3
The folks at Develop-Online.net, a European-based website and magazine totally focused on the games development sector, have ranked and published a list, the Develop 100: The Worlds Best Game Studios, of the top 100 of the world's most successful games development studios based on Metacritic data, charting success based on critical reception of console, PC and smartphone games released around the world.

Anybody familiar with the way Metacritic works will understand that this is not a list of sales success or install base, but a critical ranking of quality as covered in reviews.

Spanning formats of PC, iOS, DS, Wii, 360, XBLA, PS3, and PSP, 50+ developers listed were iOS-based. The list of luminaries as well as little-knowns included some names our readers might be familiar with such as:

#10 - The Coding Monkeys known for Carcassonne
#22 - GAIA Games known for Sword & Poker
#55 - Pixelocity Software LLC known for Disc Drivin'

Congratulations! I expect to see a few more names we're familiar with here added to that list next year.

• Game Center Improvements for iOS 5 Announced at WWDC - June 6
There was lots to soak up from the Apple World Wide Developers Conference keynote on Monday, but the one item that caught this blogger's attention as perhaps being capable of having a direct impact on iOS Board Games was the announcement that Apple has added support for turn-based games right into the OS. This of course gave cause to believe that all of our asynchronous multiplayer games will come true through the iCloud. Here's how Scott Forstall, senior vice president of iPhone Software put it:

Quote:
"Another thing we've done for our developers is we've added support for turn-based games right into the OS. {applause} There are some great turn-based games out there like Scrabble, but the developer had to do all the work for that. And now, that's supported right out of the box in iOS 5. There's some really nice enhancements to Game Center."

I was actually quite surprised and thrilled to hear applause when Scott mentioned turn-based games. For a second, it seemed as if all the developers in the room had been waiting for it. Now as much as I do love and believe in the power of async, from the larger perspective of game apps in general, they are still currently a rather rare and strange bird. Let's hope that changes! Later, the Apple Developer' website described the Game Center improvements this way:

Game Center
Game Center is taking multi-player gaming on iOS one step further with the addition of turned-base game support. With turn-based games, players can play when they want and Game Center will manage each turn for them. Game Center will automatically send the next player a push notification via Notification Center and manage multiple game sessions. Other developer additions to Game Center include, adding players to existing multi-player games, displaying achievement notification banners, and support for distinct icons for each leaderboard.

It would be great if a developer at WWDC could break it down into specifics for us. I have seen, however, some of the early comments and reactions of a number of iOS board game developers with hopes to offer async in the future. Clearly they interpreted the news as the solution they may be looking for. If this capability comes in the Fall with iOS 5, it could turn out to be a very merry holiday app season for iOS board games and gamers!

• Wizards War Updated to Version 1.10 - June 7
Malvicio, the developer of Wizards War has updated the simple miniatures board game app for iOS iPhone to version 1.1.0. Here's what's included:

Quote:
What's New in Version 1.1.0
- Multiplayer, multiplayer and more multiplayer. Support Game Center and Peer to Peer connectivity with bluetooth and wifi. Now you could play with your friends everywhere.
- Five new spell cards for the sorcery school: 3 new summons and 2 general spells.
- Special effects and animations, now you will see as your magic bolt is shooted by your wizard and impact the objective.
- Skills for some miniatures. Now, the miniatures may have a special skill for use instead of an attack action.
- One specific game board for duels between two players.
- User interface general improvements.
- Many bug fixes.

What's My Word? There seem to be a lot of word packs in the itunes screen shots. I count at least 12. and i guess each online player needs the same packs as me to play? i'm not sure how that is going to work out.

One question: Why just Canada? Apparently, its because HHG think Canadians are "nice".

Game Center Improvements for iOS 5: I hope that developers use the asynch turn based feature in gamecenter, as well as the icloud APIs. I'd love to see my dungeon solitaire games add up across all devices, or start an alien menace on the ipad, and finish it on the ipod.
I think this iOS update will potentially delay any further update of apps that were in the middle of adding GC support. It will probably be a dry summer, with chances of heavy downpour in the autumn. (that's fall to those of you who pay in dollars).

This is what I'd love to see as well. As someone with an iPhone and iPad, being able to have the same saved data across devices for universal apps would be great.

There are 20 word packs, one of which ("Potpourri") is included in the base game. Word packs are additional words to guess in solo play.

You can send and receive challenges from friends (through Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.) for interactive play.

I was going to handle my multiplayer through coding something on a google app engine site. Which I may still do until LiveCode supports game center.

I use the LiveCode engine because I love the code/gui structure and design and how the code is pretty much plain english. I just hope LiveCode adds this gamecenter stuff in as soon as possible.

I don't have any apps out yet but I hope to release something by the end of the year.

I love this new feature on BGG, I am waiting patiently for my iPad 2. Question though, I read all the back logs and it seems that this is only for iOS games? What about apps that we could use as a general board game audience. For instance, there is a program called 'What to Play' available for computers that allows you to determine what game your group might want to play for the night. Will this section cover an app like that? Have you heard of an app like this at all?

Thanks!

We may from time to time mention such iOS "game aid" apps, especially if they are really cool. But our bread and butter here is iOS board game apps.

It's got a pretty good selection of stuff on there, though I'm not certain how often it is updated. Should at least give you a starting point and possibly some people to talk to.

It actually seems like there have been a few big games that were released in Canada first. Several First Person Shooters (I believe "Eliminate" was one of them?) were released first in Canada.

When a game has a robust online multiplayer component and private servers that have been set up to handle that load, the developers sometimes do a launch in Canada to get a feel for how the US market will react without overloaded the servers. It's kind of an early stress test to make sure that when it is released in the US it's a good experience and they can handle the load.

What's My Word feels like a work in progress rather than a finished game. Several things disappoint me about it.

1. Individual word packs for solo play? Seriously? It feels like gouging to me. Yeah I can get an all access pass for $9.99 but come on. I'd rather they just charge me $4.99 for the game and give me a whole game.

2. This WOULD be tempered by the online play except that the system they have in place for it is easily the worst I've ever seen for an iOS game. I can initially send out challenges by e-mail or various social networks. Later, those people will be in my address book. I can share my results similarly through e-mail or social networking, but all it really is is advertising for the game.

Example: my wife and I just downloaded the game. The game uses Game Center for tracking high scores, but I can't challenge her through it. So I come up with a word and send it by e-mail. She receives the challenge and now she pops up in my address book for future use. She completes the challenge, but I have no idea how well she did on it unless she posts her results, again via e-mail or social networking. But the e-mail I receive gives me a link that, on my iPad sends me to the app and says "can't load your own challenge" and on my computer sends me to the iTunes store. It doesn't say WHICH challenge she got that score on. Could be one of mine, could be someone else's.

Other little things are annoying such as you can only remove a row from the scratch sheet by swiping right to left, counterintuitive to how I generally swipe.

This is too bad because I was really looking forward to an iOS version of this game. It's nice to have all the math done for you. But in the end, this feels like it might as well always be solo play. The challenge system is just poor.

Edit to add: I found a button that says "Invite Game Center friends". I clicked it, and what it actually does is invite friends TO Game Center, not invite friends to the game. Huh??? I can do that from the Game Center app and the wording is completely misleading.

I personally have a non-GameCenter device, so this may be slightely different, but after clicking "My Challenges" you can view "Sent Challenges" and it will show a leaderboard for each challenge you've sent out. So you should be able to see your wife's score here, even if she never shares her results over email or social networking.

OpenFeint has a multiplayer API that I was just starting to work with when this got announced. Now the question is whether it's worth the effort to support both or just target Game Center.

Hmmm perhaps I retract that. It seems like the leaderboard show a cumulative high score for short words (6 letters) and long words (7 letters) but not individual scores.

So, in my opinion, still a very broken challenge system.

If that's the case, then it is definitely a bug. In the non-GameCenter leaderboards there is a separate leaderboard for each challenge word you've created. I've notified our lead developer and we'll get it fixed.

Thanks for the report.

I, too, was looking forward to What's My Word on IPAD and am disappointed with the results (at this point, I'd rather just play the lower tech online solo version). In addition to the price-gouging feel of the word packs, the last thing I want in a game like this is a major topical clue as to what the word is.

Does the all access pass solve/mitigate that (by randomly choosing from among packs)? And will the all access pass get you future word packs or is it just what's there now?

Even without the all-access pass you have the ability to play a random word from any of your downloaded packs without knowing which pack it came from.

The all-access pass will get you any future word packs we develop as well.

Keep in mind, this $0.99 app comes with one 50-word word pack already downloaded, access to the Daily Challenges, and unlimited Friend Challenges - a way to play the original 2-player game, with even more than two players.

If you have a GameCenter device there are something like 70-80 achievements to work for as well.

OpenFeint = the past. GameCenter = the future.

Like some of Apple's first efforts, the initial version of GameCenter is a bit underwhelming. But (as shown by Monday's presentation), it will only get better, more polished and more robust as time goes on, and Apple is firmly committed to making it a winner. And it's the only service directly connected to the people who make both the operating system and the hardware.

No-brainer to me; I'd gleefully toss OF overboard.

Imagine if when you bought Scrabble you had to pay extra for the AI to have better words to choose from. "Now, get words with the letter U for only $0.99!" People would flip.

Yes this is a $0.99 app, but but I would rather pay a little more and have a complete app than $0.99 up front and then another $9.99 for the rest of the game.

It's all about perceived value. This is a fun game, but it can be played for free on sheets of paper and even if you buy the boxed version, you probably will spend about $12. Most people don't want to pay as much for the iOS version as the boxed version of a game even if the boxed version can't be played solo (not like you can play Small World or TTR solo out the box either).

For each additional $0.99 (for $9.99 for a full pass) I am getting what kind of value? Words from a dictionary? Ok, maybe they are carefully selected words so that your customers aren't going "What the heck is 'syzygy'?!" But still... I paid $4.99 for Angry Birds HD and they've released hours and hours of content that probably took hours and hours to program for free. Ticket to Ride cost me $6.99. Yeah not every studio is probably as rich as Rovio/Chillingo or DOW but is this game really worth $10.98 by comparison?

Maybe, if it was perfectly smooth and had a clean UI, perfect multiplayer and leaderboards, and some other amazing features that just knocked it out of the park.

The game is good, but it's not THAT good and it needs a lot of work. And having to pay for a handful of words out of the dictionary feels lousy to me.

I must admit, I was a little irritated when I saw that my purchase only got me 50 words. I expected way more than that for a base install.

I'll play my 50 words, the daily words until they start charging, then I'm done. At that point, I'll have my money's worth, but I'm not going to keep throwing money at it.

Hothead is located in Canada, so that automatically became the testing ground. I just hate waiting......

I created a Canadian iTunes account in about 2 minutes and was downloading the game. Granted I am still working out how to get an iTunes gift card added to that account so I can do IAP's but at least I can check the game out.

As for a comparison vs Orions 2, I'll take KC any day. It's really well done and the developers are awesome when it comes to communicating with the gamers. That is a HUGE plus in my book.

Not to bring attention to a potential competititor, but I notice there is an app by Zynga (who bought NewToy, I believe, who made Chess with Friends and Words with Friends, the two best multiplayer apps in the early days of the iOS), called "Hanging with Friends" that looks like it may be a very similar concept to What's My Word?

Anyone know anything about Hanging with Friends? It is currently above Angry Birds in the US popularity charts, and Zynga are masters of the online gaming. I'm curious to hear some reports and comparisons.

This is 100% correct. Almost every major social game, from We Rule to Trade Nations, received a Canada only release first. Even Order & Chaos Online went this route. It basically has to do with stress-testing the servers. Because there's no easy way to do a massive beta for an iOS game, developers launch network-heavy games in Canada first because it has a perfect-sized install base to find out if there are any major problems.

If it helps any, I've been in touch with their PR firm (I'm a games journalist by trade, so it's not as strange as it sounds) and I've been told Kard Combat is on track for a likely release late June/early July worldwide.

Also, I've played the Canadian release, and it RULES.

Strongly disagree. The game has at least a few broken cards and has very little (if anything) going for it in the way of strategy.

In Orions 2, every card has a counter, every strategy has a chance of being tamed and in the end, especially in Draft mode, the stronger player will have a better chance of winning. In KC, the player with the better cards will win, so if you don't own them all, you'd be foolish to even try to go online. And if you do own them all, forget about the inner game of strategizing several moves ahead like you need to do in O2 or figuring out sophisticated combos.

Perhaps I just have not delved deeply enough into KC, but I think I have. I've played six games online, surrendered early in two because I knew I had no chance, lost two to decks that had all or most of the cards and won two against weak decks like mine (the free deck). I saw zero room for strategy.

I will buy the Tower version when it comes to the US store because I think I'll enjoy it and the 100 levels (total) will probably be worth the $3 I spend on it. Once I have all the cards, I'll probably try multiplayer again but I expect to be disappointed. Quite frankly, I am underwhelmed thus far.

The graphics are really excellent, the sounds are fine, the music is fine and it's nice to have another CCG type game to play every once in awhile, but between KC and O2, I see no comparison. O2 is the hands down winner.

Btw, just for kicks, if you check the Touch Arcade forums, O2 was so anticipated that the thread for the release was over 100 pages and over 1000 posts. O2 was released on May 19th, only 26 days ago. Since then, there are 114 pages in a new post-release thread and 1132 posts. That's a lot of love. I'd be surprised if KC gets that much love.

Playing through the Tower Mode unlocks all of the cards for the mage you played it with, so you'll have a full deck when you decide to delve into the multiplayer experience. So long as you play through the single player experience first, you won't have to worry about a "he who has the best cards wins" scenario. If you jumped straight into the multiplayer with just that starting deck though? I can see why KC might have left a bad taste in your mouth.

Looking forward to seeing if your opinion changes after you finish Tower!

Yes, I get that and implied as much in my post. The problem is that the game has way too many powerful cards and very little basis for strategies and tactics. I put my big guy opposite yours. Wow. So much fun. Not.

In Orions, there is always a counter for good cards and always a counter for strategies, you just have to think it out and that takes skill. In KC, the counter for a huge creature is another huge creature or some huge spell that does huge damage. That is NOT exciting.

There are broken cards in KC, like one earth spell for 4 mana that gives you double the life of your Earth mana. Build your Earth mana up to 30, cast it and gain 60 life. your opponent, who was ahead 73-13 now sees the life totals at 73-73, the second time in the game this has occurred. This happened to me. I then did the math and figured that my opponent could gain 188 life in the next five turns. So much fun. Not. I resigned the game, not wishing to get caught up in a senseless 48-hour battle. Plus, there are other very broken cards.

From a design viewpoint, I believe the game has big problems. The Towers may be fun and as I said, I intend to buy it when it hits the US, but even when I own all the cards, for the reasons stated above, my inclination is to believe I will remain quite disappointed.

Another point; while many players seem to prefer async, it kills the excitement when you wait and wait and wait for an opponent to make his move. When Pavel Kupriyanov (the O2 developer) insisted upon making the game sync only and timing each player's move at 60 seconds, I argued for longer and I argued for async, but frankly, he proved me wrong. One of the most exciting aspects about O2 is the modest time pressure that keeps you riveted to the action. That is sadly lacking in KC. Note Shadow Era uses timed moves as well to great advantage.

KC has a lot going for it and will probably wind up doing well at least initially. As I said, the artwork, sound and music are excellent and it IS at the very least, another CCG in an IOS arena that covets CCGs. However, in my view, it comes off a very weak third versus Shadow Era and Orions 2.

I have too many games on my iPad to expect I'll be devoting all that much time to WMW. I don't think I'll run out of words. Frankly, the daily challenges are quite enough. Each takes consdierable time for me to solve and I generally don't have time to do more than both every day, so I'm probably not going to run out of fun for my $0.99.

I can't see buying more words but who knows?
