A Rather Crazy Idea

I haven't played much this week, as I didn't go to the Lion on Monday.

However, I did play Neuland yesterday. It was an interesting economic game. You are building up a country's engine, however, any of its citizens can use any of its buildings. This means if you build something, you're opponent(s) can quickly grab whatever resource that building produces.

And, well, that's kind of it. I'm playing a few 18XX games by e-mail. Most of which are fun (except for the fact that rails tells you exactly how little chance you have of making a come-back). Speaking of 18XX games, over the past week, both 1829 and 1829 Mainline have arrived at my doorstep. Mainline looks intriguing as it's an 18XX game with luck surprise I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

I've been trying to play some games solo. I've played the three CDGs I have, Here I Stand, the Napoleonic Wars and Paths of Glory, to many errors, I'm sure. I'm enjoying playing these multiplayer games solo, maybe due to the slightly more tactical nature of them.

Another one of the games that arrived recently is Empires of the Middle Ages. So I'm now wondering if it's possible to find a game for each "era" of European history and play consecutively (most likely solo). So far, I also own Here I Stand, Empires in Arms and Pax Britannica. This means that, if I want this to work, I need games set in the Classical Era, the "Roman" Era, the barbarian time after Rome Fell, the time from Here I Stand to Empires in Arms, The two World Wars and (maybe) a game for Contempory Europe.

I'd prefer them to have maps, diplomacy and multiple players. I don't want a desire to stick rigidly to history. So I'm leaning away from adding Paths of Glory to the list above. Any suggestions?

For classical era you have available the old AH Civilization, and much more modern games on the topic. You also have available Sword of Rome by GMT, a muliplayer game, Successors, another muliplayer game, and the two player game Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage.

Not sure what there is for strategic level European history between the ancient period and 18th Century, other than games focused on Britain, such as Britannia, King Maker, and games about the English Civil War. Both Britannia and King Maker are multiplayer. I played in a game that I think was set in the 100 Years War, although I can't remember the title. Conquistador by AH dealt with competition between European powers, but the action took place in the New World.

For 18th Century there is a new game on the War of Spanish Succession from Compass Games titled No Peace Without Spain. It's a two player game about to be released on July 11, 2011. There is also going to be a game on the Great Northern War named Carolus, but I don't know when. For mid-18th Century there are two abstract wargames out called Maria and Friedrich by Histogame.

But yeah, you are totally crazy. This idea is why we have pbem games such as Lords of the Earth from Throneworld and computer games such as Europa Universalis.

Diplomacy would be a fair stand-in for World War One.

WW1 is hard if you discount PoG...

Europe Engulfed is a good option for WW2.

1989: Dawn of Freedom for post-WW2?

How about Railways of Europe for the 19th Century?

Yeah, I was thinking Civilization would be my best pick for classical era. Having looked at the GMT site, Pax Romana seems to be a good pick for the Roman period.

Empires in the Middle Ages covers the 8th to 15th Centuries, Here I Stand and Virgin Queen (which I've P500ed) cover the 16th Century. Which leaves the fall of Rome and 17th Century.

I'll have a look at No Peace without Spain. Clash of Monarchs seems to fit the same time period as Friedrich, any thoughts on which would be "better"

Of course I am.
Europa Universalis, I think, just covers the same period as the board game. I'll have to look at Lords of the Earth, though.

Doi, of course!

I'm really looking forward to giving it a go, solo or not.

There are some other great games. I've recently watched calandale's La Grande Guerre. Unfortunately, like a variety of other games, it's hard to find an affordable copy.

I'm slightly wary of block games, but I've not really looked into how many "good" World War 2 there are.

Quite possibly, I'm definetly interested by it.

I wasn't that big a fan of it when I had it.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys, definetly given me some things to think about.

GMT's 30 Year War could cover your 17th century requirement.
(Or Wallenstein if you want to keep it cheap and simple.)
