• Catan for Android Coming June ???
Catan.com reports on June 9th that the Android version of Catan is to be released "in June". Catan for Android is being developed by Exozet Games and distributed by USM, who both were involved with the iOS version of Catan. The Seafarers Expansion will be offered as in-app purchasable content, or as a higher priced bundle, depending on which app store it is purchased from, since Android permits 3rd party app stores. Features include up to 4 player hotseat multiplayer and updated graphics and user interface from the iOS version.

The Cities and Knights expansion and online multiplayer is currently under development.

• More from Exozet Games - Carcassone screenshots
Back in March, Exozet Games announced that it was taking applications for people to beta test the Android version of their Carcassone app. On May 30th, they posted 7 screenshots giving their followers on Twitter a sneak peek.

• Jenga Released May 20
On May 20th, Natural Motion Games released Jenga to the Android App Store. Jenga offers players three play modes: Classic mode which is a solo challenge recreating the block stacking tenseness of the physical game. Pass and Play offers hot seat multiplayer for up to 4 players. Arcade mode allows the player to earn coins for tricky moves, and bonus points for putting the same colors together at the top of the stack. Arcade mode has various power-ups to spend the earned coins on to change block colors, add more time, or other boosts to modify the game.

• Words with Friends update to version 3.51 June 13
The Android version of Words with Friends continues to be behind the iOS version when it comes to features and fixes. This update, however, continues to squash bugs and adding a shuffle tiles button, improves memory consumption, and improves the updates to the list of game statuses. Also mentioned is the developer's appreciation for those who give feedback of problems and mention of an upcoming version supporting Honeycomb tablets.

• Hardware News
There are many manufacturers, carriers and models of Android phones and tablets. Too many to detail every release here, and that would probably be better served by dedicated Android news sites. However, just as when the iPad was released, it caused discussion on the 'Geek of how that form factor would influence or be used in board gaming, we will highlight hardware that has possible uses for our users here.

That being said, since the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, several companies are trying to bring out their tablet offerings. Here is a quick rundown of some highlights:

Samsung is offering 3 sizes, one that is 10.1 inches similar in size to the iPad.
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-reminds-us-all-galaxy-...

Coming soon is Toshiba's 10.1 inch tablet
http://www.officedepot.com/a/promo/pages/0426_toshibatablet/

HTC is offering a smaller 7 inch tablet

Viewsonic tablet
Viewsonic announced a smaller tablet that hits a price point below $300. While not as powerful as the other tablets, and running an older version of Android, it may be interesting to see what happens if these are more affordable. http://www.viewsonic.com/company/news/vs_press_release_48934...

Keep it up. I was about to pull the trigger on an iPhone, but I will monitor this blog for another couple of months and see if "Droid" starts catching up...

For me the decision is about which has the most/best apps for my needs/desires. Right now it's iPhone, but Droid is close behind. And, I love to tinker. A Droid will let me tinker.

Anyway. Thanks for starting this. Will be watching intently

what i want is to be able to play a game of carcassonne with an android based friend as well as an iOS based friend. why should i have to choose? i can play web games with friends and i don't care what device they have. it should and i think will be the same on the mobile devices. take some time i suppose, but it'll happen as people demand it. i should think that android will be more open than iOS and when apple loses some customers, enough to notice, they'll change as well. i am actually considering what device to get in a smart phone right now, and i was mostly iOS focused, but this post is a good push back to considering the 'other' side. really though i just want to be able to play with people whatever platform they're on.

I've had an Android phone since the G1 launched. I currently have an iPhone 3GS, a G2, a Nook Color tablet running CyanogenMod 7, and a G1 that I use as the remote control for my HTPC.

The iPhone 3GS gets used less and less. While they have more apps, I just like the Android devices better, and I have them in different form factors, but all the apps I buy get used on both. The same can be done on the iPhone/iPads as well, but I just like Android better.

Yup, and very happy that I did. I'm not tied to the Apple train, I can do what ever I want. If I don't like the browser, I can replace it. I don't like the chat program? Gone. Pick a system app and there's bound to be one out there you'll like better. (For example, why can't I search in a page for a string on an iOS device?)

Android opens a lot of doors for the user to have their say. Yes, Google does have it's moments, but I'm no where as restricted as an iOS user.

I won't dismiss the fact that the apps for iOs are more mature, but Android is catching up and fast. More than a few times I've shown the iOS user at work and Android app and he can't find it (or similar) app in the iOS market. And I like the fact that I can easily hook my Android device to my Linux desktop and be able to copy files/pictures/music to it as I like.

... and I can run Flash.

I hope this doesn't become a new OS War. I think it's a good thing that the blog understands that PDAs are a very valuable tool to boardgamers. I think it's very wise to remove the flavor of the day and address it from a wider perspective. Anyone remember when Palm Pilots were the end all to be all? That lasted what, three years? I find it amusing the amount of Rabid Apple fans (not trying to insult the initial poster here) there are out there. It wasn't that long ago that Apple/Mac was considered the red-headed stepchild of the industry...

Then again there are those "Blackberry People". What a bunch of freaks they are. Let's talk about those looooosers!

On the subject of Viewsonic tablets, if you're looking for a low-cost Android tablet I'd highly recommend looking at the Viewsonic gTablet.

The specs are very similar to the Motorola Xoom for a sub-$300 price. Just last week Woot had them for $269.99 plus the typical Woot $5 shipping.

The key specs are:
- 10.1" Display
- 1 GHz nVidia Tegra-2 Dual Core Processor
- 16GB internal storage upgradable to 32GB via micro SD
- 512MB RAM

But, if you really want to take advantage of the platform, be prepared to flash a new ROM. My wife's and mine are both running the Vega-N Gingerbread ROM.

Fortunately, this can be done in-place without hooking it up to a PC.

Gaming on a larger tablet is definitely a different experience from a phone. My Incredible seemed sufficiently large until I got the gTablet... now it seems much smaller than it used to.

In my experience, Apps look better on the Iphone. Even the same app made for both platforms. I have an iphone and I have played with an Android phone at work. And really, it seems like stuff will come out for iphone first for a while still. And in many cases, only for the iphone.

It may take a few years for this to change, in my estimation.

Thanks to Virgin Mobile, I get unlimited data on my android phone for $25/mo. That's the whole bill, including unlimited text. Oh, and the phone was only $150. And its on Sprint's network, so I get better coverage than my colleagues with iPhones. devil

Another hardware release to watch for: The Motorola Triumph is coming to Virgin Mobile in July.

Well, Days of Wonder accomplished that somewhat with TTR Online playable between iPad, PCs, and Macs. And Words with Friends now bridges iOS and Android. Still, a good question. Though I'm guessing not, simply because the apps are made by two different developers.

Awesome news, I didn't realize a Carcassonne app was in the works for android, so this makes me incredibly happy. I wonder if it'll have cross-platform support to play with people who have the iPhone version, seeing as it's made by the same company. My friend has the iPhone version of Carcassonne that he plays daily.

Also Catan is a welcome game!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome... I also hope for the ability for iOS and Android to play together in Carcassonne and Catan, as I have both apps already for my iPod Touch. A lot of that depends on the developers. As it was previously mentioned by others, Words with Friends, Ticket to Ride and many other games are able to do it, so it is not an issue with the platforms.

In the comments on an older article on Joystiq from March, http://goo.gl/RaZWe, Exozet says that Carc for Android is expected out at the end of Q2, which like Catan, means sometime in June, unless the release date has slipped since the article. This article also mentions that this will come out for Blackberry and other J2ME, Java based phones.

I've been in touch with the developers of Carc on both platforms over the last few months, and I'm afraid it doesn't look good for that (though as others have said, there's no technical issue with it). Coding Monkeys, who make the iOS version, basically respond to any mention of Android with "we're an iOS shop, why are you asking about Android, did we mention that we were an iOS shop?". Exozet were a lot more helpful, but I'm afraid they're still wrapping their heads around the idea of online multiplayer at all. Specifically, they're bringing it to the Carc app in a later version - but it will, according to the response I got, be realtime play only. ("why would you want non-realtime play?") If they don't offer it non-realtime, it obviously won't interoperate with the iOS version.

The non-realtime aspect is one of the things I absolutely love about iOS Carcassonne, there is no way I could play most of the games of it that I do if I had to coordinate my friends to play at the same time. I did follow up to Exozet with this, but have had no reply.

I've even written to Hans im Glück, figuring that as the licence holders, they can insist on interoperability (well, I think it'd be great for overall sales), but they basically pointed me back to the two software companies.

Have I taken this too seriously? :-) Probably!

Since I heard Catan was coming to android in June, I was checking the android market almost daily waiting for it to come out. They really squeaked this one as I think it came out yesterday on June 30th (or maybe even today).

It's $4.49 and I just fired it up.

For some reason the Campaign mode is locked initially, but Custom game is enabled. It appears to have Seafarers Lite installed, but it looks like a full Seafarers mode is an in-app purchase possibly.

edit: Oh, the Campaign mode is locked until you buy Seafarers for another $4.49. That's a pretty dirty trick, but I was expecting to pay $10 for the game initially, so I guess it's still cheaper than $10 for both purchases.
