Dragonslayers - A game in the making!

Dragonslayers is a game about treasure, gold and glory - and of course slaying dragons. I sent out copies of the game to a crafty and trusty lot of playtesters. In this here blog my playtesters and I will discuss the game, how it plays out, what works well and what less, what is obviously broken and how we could change the rules to make Dragonslayers an enjoyable experience for gamers old and young!

Thanks to your tireless efforts, Dragonslayers has changed a lot and is evolving very fast. While this creative process is vital to turning DS into an exciting, satisfying and fun to play game, the original playtest copies I sent out to you are already horribly outdated.

In an effort to solve this problem, I will post here links to pdfs of blank card templates for Heroes, Monsters, Events, Terrain etc you can print to add the new cards to the game and to enable you to update it more easily. Simply add the stats and info to the cards with a pencil, so you can erase and change them easily, as the game is bound to be undergoing a lot of changes and balancing still...

Here you can download the blank card templates:

Events:

Heroes and Monsters:

Items and Treasures:

Potions and Spells:

Terrain:

Hope these templates are helpful to some of you!
I know printing stuff yourself is much to ask, so you need only do it if you really want to. For a current list of the contents of the Adventure Pile read Rob's post here:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/2989/making-the-deck-h...
(read comments to see the newest version of the Monsters).

Another thing:

Rob and I were thinking of adding more weapons to the Blacksmith inventory. How about this weapons line-up:

Sword: +1 ATK (50 Gold)
Bow: two-handed, +3 INIT, +1 ATK, -1 DEF (50 Gold)
Battleaxe: +2 ATK (100 Gold)
Mace: +3 ATK, -2 INIT (100 Gold)
Spear: +3 ATK, +2 INIT (150 Gold)
Halberd: two-handed, +4 ATK (150 Gold)

Tell me what you think. Two handed weapons don't allow the use of a shield while equipped (or a second weapon in case of Ulg the Oak).

Good stuff! The balancing on most of the new weapons is very inspired! Mace seems outclassed by Spear, imo.

We've been working on ways to increase player interactions in coop, and I wanted to get your opinion. Would having party formations, with front and back rows, be any good? With ranged weapons and heavy armor that limits your attack potential, we were thinking traditional RPG builds could come into play. Your thoughts?

Yes Joe, Spear outclasses Mace obviously, but it will cost you 50 bucks more. Would you change the stats? If yes, what do you suggest?

As for your ideas with front and back row:

I am not too fond of adding yet another layer of complexity to the game by implementing a front and back row mechanic to the game (I like my games to be as light as possible while still offering strategic choices) but I am not totally opposed to it.

Can you elaborate a little bit more how the party formation concept would be done during a battle? Did you already try this in a game of DS?

What do the rest of you think about Joe's idea?

Oops, didn't realize I needed to subscribe here to be notified of new posts. I'm still new to the blog thing.

The reason I brought up the two row system to add player choices and a cooperation aspect to fighting monsters as a team. The way I would do it is that there would be certain weapons with a 'range' icon like Spear and Bow that would work from either row, but only ranged weapons could work from the back row. In combat, the monster could only attack players in the front, and you could switch places immediately following a monster attack.

I think this would encourage players taking roles within the party, and make weapon purchasing decisions a little more complex. Also, I believe it may help people get into the fantasy a bit more, adding aspects to combat that feel realistic.

Does this seem it would be worth the time to test?
