My first Blog post will be wargame boardgame played with miniatures.

The usual miniatures gaming group decided to play Commands & Colors: Napoleonics (CC:N ) with miniatures. One of the members (Ken) already had a bunch of 15mm Napoleonics figs ready to go. The host (Jaye) has a 6x8 foot gaming table with hexes already on the green table top. Ken choose scenario #3 from the CC:N scenarios booklet.

Here is a picture of the scenario right after setting it up. French on left.

We had 7 people, 6 players with Ken "running" the game. Each side had a commander, whom was in the center section. The commander holds the cards and chooses which one to play. The sub-commanders would then choose what to do if their section received any activations.

The French pressed on the right flank and then on left. The center turned out to be a shooting gallery for the British. The town of Ventosa (left section) fell to the French and eventually half of Vimiero (right section) was occupied by the French. The final blow came from a Bombardment (card) that blast some infantry. The game ended with a French 6 to 4 victory.

The C&C game series lends itself to using miniatures very well. As a frustrated 30+ years miniatures wargaming vet, who has an opinion or two ( whistle ) about the hobby, anything that makes it easier to put on games, get them finished in the available time, and can help reduce issues over rules interpretations is top on my to-do list. Some minis gamers can't stand hexes on the tabletop (I used to be one of them), now I won't play a game unless it has hexes or zones of some sort to manage movement (and speed up play at the same time).

Anyway, I've been in the process of "3D"-making Battle Cry, M'44, Hold The Line, Trenchzone, and Tank On Tank over the past months, in order to present to my local gaming community fast-playing, visually appealing games that can be played in an evening or an afternoon (and a number of times in fact). Taken a bit further, I once read a comment that Paddy Griffth penned as a critique of miniatures gaming's future, that eventually the miniatures themselves would become the problem for advancing the hobby......I've now been working on making game pieces (flats) that replace miniatures while still giving some of the visual appeal of toy soldiers on the tabletop (you can check out my gallery here on BGG for some examples of my WIP).

I applaud you Greg, and your gaming buds Jaye & Ken for your on-going accomplishment(s) of using minis with the C&C Naps system, something I think offers a lot of the best of both world's.

Thanks for your comments David.

This group plays lots of different eras and rules sets, Mostly without hexes. Luckly there is not much gamey playing within the group that can lead to the dissatisfaction of the miniatures gaming experience caused by some people fudging the distances in their favor, or saying something is (or not) allowed when not covered by the rules. I personally believe that most of the non game store clubs has less gameyness. I think having a bunch of people play a game is part of the reason it can slow down.

I took a look at your pictures and see some nice stuff. I commend your efforts at working to make the hobby more appealing/accessible. It is great when people try to do something about what they see as problems, instead of just complaining about them.

I see you are in St Louis, you should bring the games you are creating to our convention, Recruits. We encourage young people to attend with free admittance to students. www.recruits-con.com
