The importance of theme and art

Last night I played Jamaica with some friends and it was a big hit. (This was the second time I played this game. After the first time I recommended it to this friend and that's why he bought it.)

The game itself is quite simple, there is nothing special about it. It's a race game with a small twist. I wouldn't have thought that I'd like a game like that.

So what makes this game so great? The theme and art and the fact that they work so well. The game is beautiful to look at. Every piece of it catches the eyes, it's lovely and full of color (think of Monkey Island 3). And as I said the theme works as well. The pirate race is believable, the mechanic and resources fit the theme and the confrontation is very well done (adds fun and tactic options, but it's not that serious that it would ruin the game for many).

Without either this art or theme the game would be mediocre, but this way... I can't think there are many people who wouldn't enjoy it (even if only for some time). In fact some of the people we played with were non-gamers, and they were astonished.

Second only to Tikal II: The Lost Temple, it has the most fantastic box designed for the game I've ever seen. I like the combat mechanic and the dice and card driven choice of what to do next dependent highly on what you can afford at the time, bolstered by bonus cards you've managed to acquire. We've had some incredibly tight races and a few blow-outs, but everybody seems to like it. It's a quick and light starter, not expected to require deep thought.
