A big week of gaming as we celebrate Father's Day and my pending birthday with boardgames, video games, swimming, and watching some of the US Open.

This week's gaming started off on Wednesday with a 3 player game of TransAmerica.

I got off to a good start, winning the 1st two rounds. The third round was a disaster for me and my daughter took the lead. Melissa was near elimination so unless she won the next round, it was likely over. I was able to win the round and my daughter went past me, giving me the victory. Final Scores: Larry 7, Eva 4, Melissa 0.

Thursday night saw the first play of one of my birthday presents, Glen More.

Since this was the first play, everyone sort of stumbled around a bit at first, but we quickly picked up how to play and the game proceeded at a nice pace. When the dust cleared, it was apparent that I picked up the game more slowly than everyone else. Final scores: Son 49, Daughter 42, Melissa 37, Larry 31?!?!?.

Friday night arrived and I was ready for a rematch in Glen More as I knew I could play better than I did in our first game. This proved to be correct as I improved my score by a whopping 4 points. This improvement still kept me in last by a large margin. My daughter and Melissa tied for fewest tiles and this proved the difference. Final Scores: Daughter 47, Son 44, Melissa 42, Larry 35. Wow, I stink at this game.

After two humiliating defeats in a row, it was time to bring out one of my strongest games, Ingenious.

I played to kill this game and finished it off early with all 18s. Final scores: Larry 18, Melissa 11, Son and Daughter 8.

The family wanted a rematch and I gave it to them, but nothing much changed. Final Scores: Larry 18, Son 10, Daughter 8, Melissa 7.

Saturday, I introduced the kids to Chinatown.

I have the original Alea version and a look at my logged plays showed that the last time I had played it was before either of my children were born. So it was nice to get an oldie back to the table after a 10 year hiatus. I spent a few minutes reviewing the rules and then explained it to everyone. There was one contradiction in the translated copy I had, but a quick trip to BGG answered my question. We played a fairly nice game, as everyone was willing to trade and most trades were reasonable. Final Scores: Larry 138k, Melissa 133k, Son 129k, Daughter107k.

Although my daughter finished in last by a rather large margin, she absolutely fell in love with this game and was ready to play again. We didn't have time to play again at that moment but we did get a 2nd playing in after dinner.

This time the trades got a bit more creative, with future considerations and speculative trades but as far as I know there was no backstabbing as everyone kept their word. I got a couple of lucky breaks and cruised to the win. Final Scores: Larry 144k, Daughter 127k, Son 107k, Melissa 103k.

Father's Day saw me open my second game that I received as a present, Egizia.

I was mildly concerned about the game since the rules had been slammed on BGG, but the rules were not nearly as bad as I feared. There were a few outright mistakes and a nonsensical sentence but not too bad. I explained the rules to the family and after the first round everyone understood how to play. Not everyone understood the strategy however but that will come with a few more plays. Going into the final round, I felt like I was in position to win, but Melissa completed all of her sphinx bonus cards for the win. Final Scores: Melissa 85, Larry 80, Daughter 75, Son 63.

So, I managed a combined 0-3 record in my new games, finishing 4th twice and 2nd once.

We finished up the evening with a family favorite, Liar's Dice.

Things went well for me the first game as I won without losing any dice. I won the 2nd game, while losing only 1 die. Melissa took the 3rd game, keeping all of her dice. The final game was the closest as my daughter, Melissa, and me all had one die each. Daughter was eliminated first and then I was knocked out as Melissa captured her 2nd win of the night.
