Quote:

• Starting Player Gets Major Update - June 28
A while back, we reviewed the iOS version of Ted Alspach's Start Player. A few of you commented that you liked the free app known as Starting Player by Jordan Zimmerman/A is A LLC. Thanks for pointing it out. After all, there are countless ways to determine start player and a number of you swore by this app. Well, it received an update this week:

Quote:
* Major update to the app. Reworked UI with better, consolidated features. Lots of new stuff.

* Fixes several bugs in v2.0 and resurrects the Friends/Things tab

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Smq3RC8yf5I&offe...

• Hunters: Episode 1 HD Updated to Version 1.1 - June 29
Rodeo Games has updated its formerly-free turn-based tactical strategy game, Hunters: Episode 1. It's been nearly three months since the last update. Here's what's included:

Rodeo Games wrote:
What's new

Game Center and OpenFeint support
Unlock 39 challenging Achievements
Compete with other Bounty Hunters on Leaderboards
Full game re-balancing
New Skyscraper Environments
More daily contracts
New in-game user interface
Improved Free Gifts

Unfortunately, however, both apps also received a price increase from having always been free to $1.99 for the iPhone and $2.99 for the iPad.

iPhone - http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Smq3RC8yf5I&offe...

• Cargo Runners Released - June 29
As promised, Trouble Brothers have released their euro-inspired economic game, Cargo Runners right on schedule--how about that! It is is available for the iPad initially, but will soon be Universal. The app is priced at $7.99.

• Prose with Bros Update to Version 1.0.5 - June 29
The wacky asynchronous refrigerator magnet and voting game by Evil Laugh Games rolls on with even more updates. This time highlighted with 100 verbs. Here's what else is new:

Quote:
What's new

-------NEW VERB PACK-------
100 new verbs! You can now putter, squeak, soar, splash, dunk, rumble, giggle, tinker, and squash to your hearts content.

-------NEW FEATURES-------
- PUNCTUATION! That's right folks, punctuation. You can now add commas, periods, question marks, quotations, etc. to your sentences. Appropriate-length pauses will be automatically added to the voice playback based on your punctuation, so you no longer have to add empty space to create the pauses you want (but you still can).

- TWITTER! Using your Twitter account, you can now direct-tweet your prose from within the game (even tweet prose from other players).

- CAPITALIZATION! The first word of every sentence is now automatically capitalized, including after punctuation to start a new sentence.

- Options for player challenges, saving sentences, and tweeting are now added to all sections of the game so that you can access these features from anywhere you see a sentence, not just from the voting section like before.

-------BUG FIXES-------
- Fixed issue with words breaking apart while dragging them back and forth with the "word lock" function turned on.
- Fixed issue with voice button remaining stuck on after playing your sentence, which caused all other buttons to be greyed out and inaccessible until you tapped the voice button again.
- Fixed retina-display art on "Vote" button which was messed up from the previous build.
- Fixed issue with the green kudos checkmark disappearing after scrolling the vote screen.
- Fixed issue with missing voice-over files for the words "been" and "being".

• Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer Released - June 29
Incinerator Studios attended last week's Origins Game Fair in Columbus, OH. While there, they demoed the iOS version of Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer at the Gary Games booth. According to their weekend Tweet, the app was submitted on June 24th. They were saying it would take one to two weeks to become available. Well, it's finally out now!

This beautiful looking Universal app, priced at $4.99, claims to be "the first officially licensed deck building game for iOS." It's packed with features including:
Quote:
-Universal App – play Ascension on iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, iPod Touch 3, or iPod Touch 4 for a single low price.
-1st officially licensed deck building game for iPhone and iPad.
-Over 50 beautifully detailed cards, hand drawn by Eric Sabee.
-Recruit Heroes and Constructs to bolster your deck.
-Defeat Monsters for Honor and rewards.
-Full asynchronous support for multiplayer online games.
-Play against multiple A.I. opponents using varied strategies.
-Introductory tutorial to teach you how to play.
-Enhanced visual optimization for iPhone 4 and iPad using high resolution graphics designed for the retina display.

With that compelling set of features combined with some attractive original graphics...of course we don't need to tell you that we'll be checking it out. Let's hear what you think!

It doesn't make sense for most programmers to make an Android version. Per-unit sales in the Android shop are about 10% of what they are in the iOS shop.

Disclosure/Disclaimer: I was a tester for Ascension over the past month or so.

I think Ascension is a brilliant, addictive, feature-rich masterpiece of an iOS app that truly highlights everything that is awesome about iOS gaming. In my opinion, it belongs among the top five iOS board/card/dice game releases of all time, maybe even deserving the number 1 spot, and they have indicated the level of support and future updates with new features that will satisfy even the most demanding gamers.

Part of my praise is due to the strength of the game design itself, which is fun, deep, fast, and engaging, with far more strategic and tactical play than novices often assume given the elegant and streamlined nature of the deck-building, but beyond the exceptional core entertainment Gary Games has offered the community, Incinerator Studios has also set a remarkably high bar and offered a silver arrow for the quiver of anyone who wants to argue that iOS is the future of boardgaming.

Pick it up.

Can't get a WiFi signal or I would!

This is one of the games that I have to regrettably pass on the physical version but will immediately grab on the iPhone. Caylus is next.

I bought Ascension and Cargo Runner last night when they popped up on Appshopper. Ascension is FANTASTIC. If you like the game the app is outstanding. Cargo Runner is fun but the lack of single player (no AI) bugs me. I don't always want to play with others on my Ipad. That is what I have a slew of REAL board games for.

Can someone explain TRADER better? I am not quite getting that one from the listing in Itunes.

I was also a beta tester for Ascension, and I love the implementation, and the async multiplayer has worked really well. I really enjoy that you can go from async play to live to if both people are on at same time, back to async again seamlessly. You can also tell if your opponent is online or not by the green or red circle by their avatar, which is really handy.

When it was free it had an in-game purchase of $7.99 to unlock the full version of the game. So assuming you get the full game for $2.99, this is actually a sale rather than a price increase.

I'm pretty sure Trader is an implementation of Ka-Ching! (which I now see was later re-implemented as...Trader).

Basically on each turn you either (1) buy a card from the middle at face value, or (2) sell two cards of the same color that you previously bought for the product of their face values. Because you can see which cards are coming up (you can only buy the bottom card on each column), there's a lot of looking ahead to what your opponent may want.

Ascension certainly didn't do Cargo Runners any favors by being released on essentially the same day.

One is fully featured, based on an established property, and has a reasonable price point. The other has none of those things.

Thanks for pointing that out. We had mentioned Trader back in April when we learned that Cocktail Games was working on it. Evidently its been released by a division of Cocktail Games called Interlude. There is no information about the game on Cocktail's web site and we hadn't made contact with anyone from there, so again thanks for posting it.

Released on 6/24, the app is officially called Trader HD, its for iPad only, priced at $3.99 and supports 1-3 players.

That is a shame. Hopefully a solo option will be available, and then I'll purchase it. Looks good, though, so hopefully folks who don't mind MP only games will buy and enjoy it enough to keep updates going...

I have a hard time getting worked up about the lack of single player in Cargo Runners. At the very minimum, for only $8 you get a rules-reinforcing and good-looking Eurogame that you can even play over the Internet. I've spent tons more on physical board games where I not only have to move all the pieces myself but I even had to punch them all out in the first place.

That being said, Ascension provides an unfortunate contrast. It looks like it may be the new Carcassonne in terms of redefining what is the epitome of an app.

I'm really enjoying seeing people react so positively to Ascension, or any released app for that matter. It's not that I was or was not already a fan of the game, but that any game could be released and appear to garner approval that approaches admiration levels near that of Carcassonne. So many recently released apps had been dinged with this or that fatal flaw for a certain slice of the iOS board game customer base. It's really nice to see a well rounded app with features enough to satisfy different values in the market. For what it's worth I've not personally yet rated any app a perfect 10, and very few 9s.

Perhaps Ascension, if not raising the bar, can at least reinforce the bar of what it takes to be an excellent iOS board game app.

I have probably played about 10 games since I picked up the Acension app last night. What a fantastic conversion. I am really impressed. This has leapt up there with Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, and Small World for great board/ card games adapted to the Ios. Abslutely love it.

Cargo Runner is also pretty solid. Played it twice. and tried to play it by myself to test it out. This would be a great game too if it had an AI to play against. It made for a reasonable face to face two player game though.

Agreed. I think "the bar" is a bit over-rated (as is the dreaded "gold standard"), but if we are going to have one, I'd say that Ascension is right there at bar-level.

Neuroshima Hex, Ticket to Ride, Small World, Carcassone, Samurai, and now Ascension ... that's the bar for high-quality boardgaiming on iOS. All are arguable to a certain extent, and some players won't like one or more of those titles, but they are all fine examples of how good the iOS platform can be.

Next up: Codito hitting a home run with Puerto Rico ... ?

You wouldn't include Ra or Medici? I think those are both great implementations..

RA and Medici are good and stand well on their own, but when placed next to the others mentioned above they are not as good as those. Not talking about game play but implementation of the app both visually and how the app plays.

I play Ra often as well, and like it, but when you go from Ra to say, Ticket to Ride you immediately can see what I am talking about.

Yes, Ascension is extremely well done, and I say this as a Dominion-hater. Purchased yesterday, and I must have already played twelve games. The interface is stellar with just a few puzzles that I solved easily. There are a few times where I will trigger an effect (usually the auto-death of a Cultist) that I don't understand, but I haven't tried using the Log to figure it out. The art has grown on me...at first I thought it was a bit amateurish, but I'm getting used to it. I don't know about replay value, but it was $5 well spent.

No. Not even close, to be frank.

However, that's just one man's opinion, and I'll repeat what I said above: the whole "raising the bar" thing is a bit overblown, anyway. No two people's "bar" list will be exactly the same. But I do agree that when an obviously polished, professional, and heavily playtested release like Ascension comes along, most iOS gamers will look at it and say, "That's pretty slick."

Anyone figure out how to max out the difficulty of the Ascension IA yet? Seems like there is an implied 3rd, red bar in the AI difficulty square in additon to the 1st green one and the 2nd orange one, but I can't get the 3rrd space to fill with anything - only toggle between green and orange.

The speculation at Touch Arcade is that the third slot will be used in the future, perhaps as soon as the first update.

For now, though, it cannot be accessed.

Count me as another Ascension fan. Previously I didn't think anything could hold a candle to Neuroshima Hex as far as implementation and addictiveness. It needed multiplayer and a better tutorial but otherwise it was my most played iOS game.

Ascension has unseated it. I have played from 100% battery to dead twice now on my iPad 2 (over the course of four days). I have stayed up way later than I should have because I had a friend online who was immediately rematching with me so the games go quickly. There are only a few minor problems with Ascension imo and even those take nothing away from its fantastic value!

After months of deliberating over it, I finally bought myself a Tablet PC and it's not an Apple product.

I am hoping the developers take the plunge and start to support Honeycomb, the tech is very nice.

If anyone is curious the EEE Transformer is an extremely nice Tablet PC for the price. $200 cheaper than an Ipad2 with better hardware.

Dude (and I don't use that term lightly) it's friggin amazing - you can switch mid-game from realtime to asynchronous and back again, and it's got push notification as well as the ability to be playing in a bunch of different matches at once - you can jump from table to table...

The more time I spend with this game the more I'm blown away. Not only do I think it's the best implementation of a board game for iOS, right now it's up there with Plants vs Zombies for my favorite iOS game. Period. Granted, I've only been playing for two days (straight) but that said, it's absolutely an essential app for any iPad owner.

Edit to say: In all fairness, although I own carc and samurai, I've never investigated whether it's possible to switch from realtime to async in those games, so my response maybe should have been... just as good? Heh... (sits back down)

I can understand it. There a many reasons to buy a non iOS device. I have a Playbook and an iPad 2 and I prefer the Playbook for all things except the games.

If they don't complain, there is less chance of those games making it to to their preferred device.

Btw, Acscension is amazing.

It is funny. The reason I never bought a mac was because the massive gap in software available on the pc that wasn't available for macs. I didn't understand the apple people bragging up apple theory in one breath, and in the next complain that to get any real usefulness out of a mac they needed to dual boot to PC o/s, then complain it was buggy or didn't work as well as the apple side (which had nothing loaded on it but o/s so of course it wasn't buggy).

This is the same reason I DID buy an ipad. Why buy something to a specific task (games) that didn't have the games I wanted to play written for it.

Kind of ironic / 180 degree thingy.

Its pretty clear apple is ahead in this game. If you don't buy an ipad you can't claim you didn't know. (Ask my droid phone that now sits and weeps to itself on the dusty shelf).

Been playing Ascension non stop and loving it. Anyone else notice that sometimes against the AI on the last turn, the AI kind of freezes and you've got to tap around to make it continue?

And what's with Cargo Runners being $7.99, with no solo play? I guess the Trouble Brothers don't want people to buy their apps?

You don't have to tap around - just wait and it will start up again. I figure it is running what-if scnenarios now that the end conditions for you are a given.

I hear you, only I worry about the excellentness of the apps destrpying interest in playing the actual boardgames. App play is so fast and easy, one who can pound on an ipad for 10 dozen games ina day or so will have "solved" most games very quickly (or as close as possible) so thier interest may wane and others interest may wane for playing with them so they don't get their pants beat off of them.

GOOD! The bar has been raised and they can all work harder making better iOS games.

Ascension being released alongside Cargo Runners is a great thing. One production company does it right, the other...

Ascension has been great but it's extremely light. Not much to think about during a turn. I mentioned this to my wife and she said, "that's exactly why I like it." Turns take 30 seconds. I hope they release some expansions.

Oh, it's fast, which is great, but there ARE things to consider if you want a 90+ score at the end of the game. Have you ventured into multiplayer yet?

I created the Player Matching thread in the iOS Board Game Community. I already played a game thanks to it. So, post your Game Center username on the thread and feel free to add me as a Game Center friend!

I just got the LITE version. Haven't even finished playing the demo yet, but it looks pretty cool. I am still unsure about the price as yet - I don't normally buy games of this price. So was wondering - what is the difference between LITE and FULL?

It seems to say (that's what it told me at the end of the demo part) that I should get the FULL version to be able to play with my friends over the internet. But I don't play any games on the net - I use it mainly as a solo gaming facilitator and as a way to keep my 4-year-old happy (Zooloretto, for example).

I'm in the same boat - I'm not around enough hot spots to warrant the online gaming. I've played 2 solo player games and am enjoying the experience. For a solo player gamer - is there any reason to upgrade to the full version?

I did upgrade to the full version of Ascension, and the 2-player offline experience looks exactly the same.

I have since found it's not only the online part that is missing in the LITE version, but also that you can only play 2-player.

Not much of a loss to me, so far.

I'm not sure if there's anything else missing.

I'm really loving Shadow Era, slightly more than Ascension, but they are both great and cheap games for the ipad.

Could someone tell me if the AI has more than the two levels I have in the free version?

I have won about 12 games against easy, and 24 out of 26 against the normal difficulty level, all solo. Wouldn't mind trying the hard level if there is one.

Sadly there is not. At least not *yet* seems to be the take on the situation. I too long for the top red bar to appear.

I have not tried against more players because it will take longer but I suspect that will make it a little harder.

Says "adjustable difficulty level" but doesn't say there is any AI opponents? I thought this was an auto-buy for me but if there is no AI then it might be a no-buy, which makes me sad.

Anyone else wish Ascension had a way to adjust the amount of point chystals the game starts with? 60 for a 2 player game always seemed a little short to me.

Indeed, point rushing seems an obvious strategy with only 60 points.

With regard to Summoner Wars - many games don't actually mention the AI but have one. I would not be interested either if there were no AI.
