Who's the more foolish? The fool or fool that plays after the fool?

I am leaving on my vacation on Sunday, which will include my brother's wedding in the English Peak District. We've been looking forward to the trip for a while, though our plan were slightly put askew by a change in the flight details.
Flights to the U.K. from Raleigh-Durham are quite expensive, especially in summer, so we are driving up to Washington, DC and flying from there. The flight was nicely arranged on Air Canada so we would shuttle up to Toronto in the mid afternoon, then take our evening flight across the pond. However, for reasons best known to themselves, the shuttle flight was changed to a morning one - and from a different Washington airport as well. While irritating, that was not so bad, though we now have several hours to kill in Toronto airport.
So comes the vital point: what games do I take with me to play? They need to be compact (for luggage space reasons as well as play area) but engaging enough to keep us amused. I'm not sure if our kids will want to play - so playable by 2 up to 4 (and OK for the 8 year old to play).
One game that is definitely going is Parade. I haven't taught it to the boys yet, but we have already had a ton of play out of it. Plus it defines compact.
The other poster child for that is Hive. However, my wife did not really get into it so far. I was thinking a few more plays might trigger something deeper. Plus we haven't even tried out the Ladybug or Mosquito. Surely room in the luggage there?
Another favorite and still reasonably compact is Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age. Quite self-contained and with only really a piece of paper each needed - and the box lid to roll the dice into, so they don't go everywhere.
And then there is the obvious and simple pack of cards. Cribbage has been a mainstay for many years (I can look at a hand and score it in a moment). A fellow Geek was also talking about another 2 player game called Piquet which I confess I read the rules and didn't have much clue how to play, but this might be a good time to muddle through a first game. And if the boys want to play, I can teach them Rummy or maybe Hearts or Spades. I remember holidays growing up playing Solo Whist.
What other games do you like to play on a layover? Or just to take on vacation?
