The Layover Game

Who's the more foolish? The fool or fool that plays after the fool?

I am leaving on my vacation on Sunday, which will include my brother's wedding in the English Peak District. We've been looking forward to the trip for a while, though our plan were slightly put askew by a change in the flight details.

Flights to the U.K. from Raleigh-Durham are quite expensive, especially in summer, so we are driving up to Washington, DC and flying from there. The flight was nicely arranged on Air Canada so we would shuttle up to Toronto in the mid afternoon, then take our evening flight across the pond. However, for reasons best known to themselves, the shuttle flight was changed to a morning one - and from a different Washington airport as well. While irritating, that was not so bad, though we now have several hours to kill in Toronto airport.

So comes the vital point: what games do I take with me to play? They need to be compact (for luggage space reasons as well as play area) but engaging enough to keep us amused. I'm not sure if our kids will want to play - so playable by 2 up to 4 (and OK for the 8 year old to play).

One game that is definitely going is Parade. I haven't taught it to the boys yet, but we have already had a ton of play out of it. Plus it defines compact.

The other poster child for that is Hive. However, my wife did not really get into it so far. I was thinking a few more plays might trigger something deeper. Plus we haven't even tried out the Ladybug or Mosquito. Surely room in the luggage there?

Another favorite and still reasonably compact is Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age. Quite self-contained and with only really a piece of paper each needed - and the box lid to roll the dice into, so they don't go everywhere.

And then there is the obvious and simple pack of cards. Cribbage has been a mainstay for many years (I can look at a hand and score it in a moment). A fellow Geek was also talking about another 2 player game called Piquet which I confess I read the rules and didn't have much clue how to play, but this might be a good time to muddle through a first game. And if the boys want to play, I can teach them Rummy or maybe Hearts or Spades. I remember holidays growing up playing Solo Whist.

What other games do you like to play on a layover? Or just to take on vacation?

I like Haggis (2-3p Tichu-style game) and Fairy Tale - both compact and relatively easy to teach (though you might have to do it in stages) and play.

Small games that I rank highly are:
Traders of Carthage - 2-4p card game that feels big for it's size.
Mamma Mia! - 2-5p memory and hand management classic.
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation - fantastic 2p cat and mouse duel.
Lost Cities - 2p you need pen and paper for scoring.
Aladdin's Dragons (card game) - 2-5p auctionish game with quite a lot going on.
Pick Picknic - 2-6p light bluffing game with fun theme.

My wife and I recently spent airport down-time playing Fairy Tale. Fluxx, Qwirkle Cubes, Cosmic Wimpout, Cookie Fu, and Micropul are also good small games for travel.

Thanks for the suggestions. I even own several of them. And as for the others, well, as long as I go out of my way, I'll pass the game store.

I knew there was a good reason to not get the deluxe version of LOTR Confrontation.

Standard Card Deck, Decktet, Mu, Sticheln, Verrater, Meuterer = More 2-4 player games than you can shake a stick at, and in many different genres.

With a standard card deck:
Tichu, Zheng Fen, Haggis - Climbing Games

Njet, Ninety-Nine, 500, WYSIWYG, Whist, Spades, Hearts - Trick takers

Piquet, Cribbage - Good two player unclassifieds.

Wyoming Cowboy, Gin - Rummy games

The Resistance! (If you find a fifth).

You could try a variant on Calcory from the Mu set wit ha std card deck.

Take three decks and play the ultimate Deduction game - Deduce or Die. I'm quite sure versions of That's Life! and Cartagena are possible with a bundle of card decks. You could also play Dutch Blitz if you subtley mark the card backs.

A 6 Nimmt! or Flaschenteufel deck can be used to play No Thanks!

A Sticheln deck can be used to play nearly every card game under the sun (incl. Parade and penguin party).

A Bohnanza or Coloretto deck is pretty handy for playing Kakerlaken Poker.

If you've got the time to faff with some ideas for making Horsefeathers a little more compact that might do down very well too.

Enjoy!

Agree that Parade is a great one to take on a trip and have done that many times. It can take up a bit of room as the parade itself stretches out 10-12 cards at a time and you need spots for the players to lay out what they have taken. Fjords and Jaipur have also ended up in our luggage a few times.

Many thanks for all the suggestions. As it happened (and I am just returned from my trip) the layover happened in the wrong airport: we were supposed to have a short flight, a 6 hour layover and then the rest of the trans-Atlantic flight. But in fact we had an ongoing delayed flight, then a cancellation, then a rearrangement of the schedule and then a flight to Toronto to get on the flight to London with about 30 minutes to spare.

A bit annoying (especially as we could never quite settle and relax into a game of something while we waited all day) but in the end, we got to where we were going at about the time we expected!
