Details on the Future of Wings of War

I usually don't print press releases straight up because they are (a) filled with puffery and useless back-patting quotes and (b) less interesting that what I write. Banana-snookered kaffeeklatsch!

But sometimes a press release has exactly the right amount of detail, especially when the subject material is niche and fans know far more about the details of said subject than I can ever pretend to have. With that said, here's a lightly edited press release from Nexus Games about the future of the English-language Wings of War game series from Andrea Angiolino and Pier Giorgio Paglia, a series that Fantasy Flight Games announced in late June 2011 that it would no longer offer:

Quote:
The future releases and reprints of Wings of War, the game series which merges card and board game mechanisms to recreate aerial combat in the 20th Century, will be distributed in North America and other territories directly by Nexus Games, the game's publisher.

Until now, the Wings of War products were distributed in the USA and other countries by Fantasy Flight Games, which will continue to offer the current Wings of War items until its stock lasts. Nexus Games thanks Fantasy Flight Games for all these years working together with the Wings of War line.

The manufacturer of the game, Nexus Games, will now distribute directly this product range to the North American market and all other territories around the world which were previously serviced by FFG.

The French and Spanish market will still be serviced by Edge Entertainment, and the German market by Heidelberger.

The first new products that will be released directly by Nexus Games are the twelve airplane packs from the third series of Wings of War Miniatures WW2, which will add to the game the Curtiss P-40E Warhawk, Yakovlev Yak-1, Kawasaki Ki-61 and Reggiane Re.2001 Falco, each in three different color schemes. WW2-Series 3 is expected to be available in stores around the world at the end of August 2011.

In September, a reprint of the Wings of War WWI Deluxe Set will be available. At the same time a reissue of some of the most popular miniatures from Series 1 of World War I planes will be available: the Spad XIII piloted by the American ace pilot Rickenbaker, Elwood's Sopwith Camel, Udet's Albatros D.Va and of course the "Red Baron" Von Richtofen's Fokker DR I.

At the same time, two new versions of each of the airplanes from WW1 Series 1 will be made available, with completely new painting schemes: the Spad XIIIs piloted by the aces Coadou and Madon; the Sopwith Camel piloted by Stackard, together with the "Germanized" Camel piloted by Kissenberth; the Albatros D.Vas of von Hippel and Jacobs; the Fokker DR Is of Kirschstein and Lothar von Richthofen.

The range will continue to be expanded by Nexus Games with new releases. A full schedule of the upcoming releases will be issued in July 2011.

To learn more about Wings of War and stay updated about this game series, visit the game's website.

Nexus Games has also posted a FAQ for players, retailers and distributors related to this new distribution arrangement.

Was it used in WWI? I thought the war ended before they were deployed.

To quote wikipedia
By October 1918, only three aircraft had been delivered to the Royal Air Force, one of which had been deployed to France for use by the Independent Air Force. The war ended, however, before it could be used on operations.

I still want one

Brian

I wonder whether the move by Nexus to distribute their own games (Magestorm and now WoW) will have an impact on other properties distributed by FFG?

I'm thinking particularly of the War of the Ring reprint and Age of Conan.

It will be interesting to see! - absolute best of luck to Nexus!

Cheers,

Giles.

Looking at the link for the deluxe set, I'd rather have the planes/pilots from the non-English version (in particular Barker and Udet) and the English version of the rules. whistle

Edit: Ahh I see, the non-English version was the first release...

The first version of the Deluxe set comprised of paint schemes that were also available from Series 1. The Revised Deluxe mini's have paint schemes unique to this particular set.

Let's hope it isn't like Rackham who thought they could do it better than FFG and went belly up less than a year later. I wish Nexus luck but it is a brutal world and I am not sure they are ready to jump into the deep end of the pool without the FFG lifeguard there.

Yeah - I hope Nexus does well. They have some fantastic properties - War of the Ring, Wings of War and Magestorm to name a few - so I think they've got the substance to pull it off - here's hoping it's successful for them!

Cheers,

Giles.

Thank you.

It's nice to read a press release full of FACTS for once. I appreciate your sharing it as is.
