The Return of Inquisitor (sort of)
By Cardboard Carnage

From Games Workshop's Website: Inquisitor is a large scale narrative skirmish game using beautifully crafted 54mm models, and set in the dark world of the Imperium's most covert and mysterious agents. It allows you to play the part of a bold hero or cruel villain in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. If character and story are more important to you than winning a battle, then this is the game for you.

When Inquisitor was first released, about 10 years ago, I was the owner of a FLGS at the time and we specialized in Games Workshop products and other similar wargames. Inquisitor was a big hit when it first came out, it offered a new approach to gaming in the 40k universe and allowed you to take a more personal role with a character (or characters) in the game.

I believe the downfall of the game was more or less due to the lack of support given over time. The first year or two I remember a lot of GW support and a lot of magazine articles, these quickly began to fade, as did interest in the game. People wanted more minis, they wanted to keep playing, but it was unfortunately downgraded to a "specialists game" with Games Workshop, and as minis sold out, they were not reproduced and many great sculpts have now gone OOP.

There is still a good selection of minis in stock with Games Workshop, although you can find them for about half price at other online game stores, but recently something caught my attention that made me unpack my Inquisitor minis.

A sculptor in Russia has begin to create and cast (in resin) a new line of 54mm miniatures that fit right into the 40k/Inquisitor Universe. The miniature line is called "Damnation" and currently there are four minis available. This opens up a new set of possibilities with Inquisitor, by allowing you to assemble and paint new minis, as well as giving you many more custom options.

Below are images of the new minis in the Damnation line, and my thoughts on them each.

Damnation - Inquisitor
This is a pretty good addition to the Inquisitor line and easily fits right in. I like the bionic arm, although it looks a little too stiff, I could see altering it slightly to have more of a bend in the elbow. Other than that, the only thing that bothers me is the awkward position of the miniatures right thumb, it almost seems as if the gun is going to fall out of his hand if he tries to walk around.

Damnation - Renegade
This is probably my least favorite miniature of the bunch, he just doesn't look right for some reason. I am not sure if it is the mask, or the combination of a beggars robe with the sci-fi boots, or the Will Smith's robotic arm from iRobot... Something is just not right. The lizard on his back is a nice touch though, and gives the character some needed flavor and personality.

Damnation - Sororita
This may be the butt ugliest nun you have ever seen, with a face that looks to be a cross between Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler, but I'll give her credit for one thing - she looks like she can kick some ass. The gun powder pistol on her hip gives her some character too, I can almost hear her uttering the Dirty Harry line "make my day..."

Damnation - Thug
Ok, this is my favorite of the bunch, I saved the best for last apparently. This guy looks like someone you want on your team, not someone you have to fight against. He has the perfect cross between technology and bad-assery (is that a word?).

Some of the chest muscles might look a little funky, but otherwise I am very impressed and look forward to getting this one built, painted and on the table. The subtle bits of bionics on his chin and spine look great too.

If you have any Inquisitor minis stored away, I hope these photos inspire you (like they did me) to take them out and dust them off for a few rounds of combat.

i think inquisitor was a great idea , but i think the biggest stumbling block was the scale .

1) the figs were overly expensive , which turned alot of people i talked to off about it , and while you could do it in 28MM , most people i spoke with didnt know that .

but doing it in 28MM meant not having access to some of the cool figs GW releasd for the game , so there were some things you would have to seriously search for or pay some one to scratch build .

2) using the bigger scale meant having to make a special set of scenery , just to use for the one game . even doing it in 28MM , didnt quite work for alot of the RPG crowd here because it would still mean alot of work .

i think it would have gone down much better if they had done it from the start as 28MM , and released a starter kit that contained some of the necromuda/gorkamorka cardstock terrain , and maybe made an expansion kit with some new cardstock terrain to flesh it out , so that the less crafty among the RPG crowd could have gotten into it more and easier .

i do notice though that 3 of the 4 figures look rather flat , that is that if you lay the figure on its back , the arms and legs would all be touching the flat surface , they lack the same degree of movement that the female figure has .

Good points...

1) The main problem with the 28mm scale is telling what parts of the mini can be seen in shooting and whatnot, it is easier in the larger scale to see what is going on in the game and hit locations, etc.

2) I agree completely, but... had they continued the line and had more releases and custom kits (they sold many blisters with new guns, heads, etc. for people to customize with), I think it would have done better. I remember being at 'ground zero' in the FLGS when people were bummed it wasn't being supported as it could have been, I am sure it was all done with perfectly good reasons by GW to earn a profit though.

Yes, they do look 'flat' as in no movement, you hit the nail on the head. I think that is one thing that bugged me but I wasn't picking up on easily, I think the Inquisitor could easily be made more dramatic with his arm outstretched and bent more at the elbow, like he is cramming that scroll into someones face... He has that look on his face like "you're gonna read this, and agree to it, or I'm gonna draw this gun and blow you away!"

The Renegade, which is my least favorite, is the most boring of them all, like he is on a stroll in a swamp. I think if I bent him at the knees in a half squatting position, it would maybe appear more like he is a tracker, and quietly following a trail and being stealthy...

Thanks for your input!

D.

Interesting discovery. Some nice sculpts to those.
I rather like the Renegade. Has this whole laid back casual, relentless, death sort of feel to it.

As for GW cancelling the game. They do what with every game. Its company policy. That this was a game using non-standard scale minis pretty much doomed it right out the gate. Expensive minis that you cant really use with the regular game nore much anything else. The casual gamer will overlook them as they cannot be easily used in other games when the line ends. And with a GW sideline game thats pretty much inevitible at some point. Usually a 2 year lifespan. Sometimes less.

Good points... Look at the Mutant Chronicles from FFG from 2 years ago, it was also doomed from the start as soon as everyone found out what scale it was in. I swear I have read a hundred posts about how someone didn't buy the game because of the scale! (Not to mention the paint jobs were horrible).

There are some great sculpts in the Inquisitor line though, the Renegades are great.

you cant go mentioning the horrible paintjobs without talking about the horrible sculpts , most of which only looked remotly like something from the mutant cronicles universe if you rub onion juice in your eyes AND had never acually seen anything from the mutant chronicles universe prior to getting the FFG remake .

it really was horrible , i was given a copy free as part of a trade here on BGG , i only accepted it because one of my players had bought into it , so i felt bad he had a game noone wants to play ................. but niether of us has actually played it .

On a bemusingly oddly related note...

Some of the Heartbreaker line of Mutant Chronicle/Warzone minis are accidentally out of scale. I have two Brotherhood figures that even though crouching are still a over 30mm tall and were they standing up I suspect one would be 40+mm tall and the other 50+. Someone wasnt paying attention during QC... ahem...
