The Casual Christian Female Gamer

My opinions on games from my point of view as a fairly casual gamer, a Christian, and a female. YMMV.

Game: Bohnanza

Overview:
Bohnanza is a card game with very appealing art (cute and funny pictures of beans). Many people have stopped to ask us what we are playing when we play in public because of the artwork. I have played with the two-player version (just ok, not nearly as good as 3+) all the way up to 8 (the game recommends stopping at 7). I like that this game has aspects of skill/strategy, luck, and social cooperation. This is another one that I would recommend for families, and mixed ages. I think the game is best when players can get animated, boisterous, and even competitive during the bartering stage. We have had a lot of laughs watching people duke it out while saying things like "I'll give you a black-eye, a stink, and a coffee for that garden!"

The Good:
Easy to learn, easy set-up (just cards), and offers a chance to socialize during gameplay. Games can be cooperative or friendly in style, or cut throat based on how the players choose to barter or if to donate cards to other players. When adults are playing with kids, sometimes we have let kids start with three bean fields instead of two to help when kids don't have a good grasp of strategy/pre-planning yet. This is a huge favorite with my gaming groups, and we often call it "the bean game."

The Bad:
Keep the rules handy, because there are different rules (mostly affecting set-up of which beans stay or leave the deck) based on the number of people playing. Since I love the bartering stage, and this basically doesn't exist in two player format, this game is really best of you usually play 3+ people.

The Verdict: Purchase
I ordered this game after playing it for the first time, and have since given additional copies as gifts.

iOS: Bohnanza (currently one for iPhone and another for iPad; although the difference is minimal so you could use the iPhone version on both devices)
I also own the iOS version of Bohnanza which helps me get my bean game fix when I am alone. I have also used the iOS version to play two humans with one AI opponent to avoid the strangeness of the two player bean duel. My only complaint is that more than two humans can't play, and that the trade table is too big, which covered your hand and your field cards.

Welcome to BGG - your short reviews are pretty good and give a neat summary of the games you enjoy. TransAmerica is a fairly light casual game that might appeal to you as well.

Great point on rules. I love the optional setups and will only play like that. Game moves quicker too.
