July 26th, 2011

Tuesday is back! Took a week off as I had a bunch of work I was doing in my house and because of the heat and lack of central air. Seemed a lot longer but perhaps it was because it is Summer and there is a ton more to do outside than play games (when not on the regular day).

Anyways. Kevin and Timm arrived and we managed to squeeze in some quick hands of Sheepshead. Timm was the only one of us to even get any hands. Chris arrived just as we started the third hand so we finished it out and started setting up for the next game and wait for Scott to arrive.

20th Century was the game we were setting up to play. I had played once before at the Geekway but not since I had bought it. It was still fresh enough in my mind to play and teach it. It's hard to say what kind of game it is. An auction game with city building and resourse gathering? I just know that I like the game. Love? Not sure on that, but it could make the rotation. Scott arrived and it took us nearly 35-40 minutes to go through the rules and the play. Lots of areas to cover as you can't just gloss over stuff. Something you do in an early part of the round affects things later so the long explanation had to be done. Ug.

The game started and really, went pretty smoothly. The auctions are a beast and tense. Managing garbage isn't very difficult, but you have to pay attention to it otherwise you will lose massive points at the end. In the second and fourth rounds, there is a bonus scoring card and in the second round, it was a double your points bonus card. Kevin really took full advantage of that and that ultimately helped him win the game. Kevin had 143, Timm had 128 (big push at the end by Timm), I had 114, Scott had 86 and Chris 77. Once we got the rules done and started playing it still took us three hours. I'm hoping the time cuts down some after the first play (I think it will).

Mr. Modelo visited me for the first time in two weeks and boy, did I miss him. The first beer went down like an ice cold Mountain Dew on a hot day...tearing at the throat, tasting oh so good. Scott brought a 3 Floyd 22oz bottle of Barley Wine. Tasty! And the Skull made an appearance in celebration of the ball and chain being shed from my ankle.
