Games I'd like to Demo and/or Buy at Gencon 2011.

(Eminent Domain is not included because I've pre-ordered it).

Let me know what you think of the games on my list and what you'd add!

1. Quarriors!.
I don't like the cartoonish art and theme but the reviews make this a "must try" and if the price is reasonable, a must-buy.

2. Discworld: Ankh-Morpork
Hmmmm... I have zero interest in Discworld, and Sci-Fi games have been pretty hit or miss with me, but Martin Wallace? I'm in for a Demo and if no Demo is to be had, I'll buy the thing.

3. Obviously A Few Acres of Snow
is a must-buy since Wallace designed it. I'd love to demo it first, and the price needs to be reasonable.

4.
Blood Bowl is too expensive to collect and Games Workshop Ltd. is an annoying company (at best), but Blood Bowl: Team Manager - The Card Game looks too fun to pass up. I'll buy it if its at Gencon.

5. Elder Sign.
Don't know much about this one, but it looks interesting. Demo.

6. I really like Irondale, and the reviews for Omen: A Reign of War
have been very good, but this is one I'd want to Demo first.

7. Rave reviews for Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive Game Set
but another I'd want to Demo first.

8. Barons
I love Glory to Rome and (like many) hate the art. If anything, the art for Barons looks even more garish and obnoxious, but the game looks interesting. Hope to say hi to the CGC guys and try it out. Demo first but will buy if no demo available.

Update: After reading Endersgame's review of Barons, I'm buying regardless. Actually the Art doesn't bother me at all --I like it much more than GtR. But the Colors are too bright and obnoxious. An upgrade, but slightly muted colors would have been much better. That said, given my fondness for Irondale and Glory to Rome, this is now a must buy.

So what did I miss or what shouldn't be on that list?

Also, let me know if you would like to join our The World Cup Game game with 8 players on Thursday around 7pm. We have room for 3 more.

I would also like to demo Quarriors. The dice element is intriguing. I would have to say that I would also like to demo Discworld.
Nice list, can't wait till next week

Nice list. We have similar desires to check out! Dungeon Run is a game I am looking forward to trying that you might like.

Small Box won't be there, but people with Omen will be floating around. I am sure you can get a chance to demo from someone floating around. I will have my copy with me. I'm volunteering at the CGF booth, so I could probably show you Barons too.

I recommend picking up Summoner Wars if possible. The Master Set is an exceptionally good deal.

Also, if you are interested in demos, stop by and check out 1955: The War of Espionage being released by me through the APE Games booth. I'll also have my copy of Omen with me and we can run through a game of that at the same time.

Of your list, I already have Baron, Battleship and Omen and want to get all but the snow game. It hasn't hit that level of 'want' yet for me.

Nicholas-- Thanks for the recommendations. And yes, I'm checking out your game 1955 -I'm already signed up (I was the guy who asked you about whether I had to have a copy of the game). I look forward to it!

Very nice list.

I've played both Omen and Barons and they're both very good in their own way. Our first game of Barons was fairly chaotic with four players baronies crowding each other out - I think the room required to play it will be less of an issue once people are more familiar with the cards. It's not like Glory to Rome at all, more like Race for the Galaxy, perhaps, with more direct player interaction and a spatial element.

Omen is very good - it feels like a design that John Clowdus has been working towards with his other Small Box games. Again, I've only had one play and that was the basic game, not the drafting game, but I am eager to play it again.

If there's one thing I don't get it's the people who don't have a problem with the art. It's bad beyond words. Why those colors?! You know, I've always thought it a bit rude to go here, but, well, since we're talking about not understanding each other...are you colorblind? Maybe that would explain why you don't think the colors are awful but most people do. I can't believe they keep making CGF games with the exact same awful color scheme either. It's the biggest WTF in the entire boardgaming world.

I think the "art" of GtR is not really that bad, but the colors are really hard to look at. Replace the garish primary backgrounds with muted colors, and it would probably be fine. Maybe it's just me...but I don't think so.

Yeah, no, I'd have no problem with the cartoony artwork if the colors were different. But as it stands, they make eyes bleed.

This statement is entirely consistent. It makes it totally obvious that you have zero interest in Discworld indeed, because Discworld is not Sci-Fi but Fantasy

I'm afraid that the first print run of Barons has run out, so it won't be available to buy at GenCon...at least not from us. Hopefully there will be a demo copy available, and it should be back in print before Essen.

D'oh! Well, that's a good problem to have. Perhaps the 2nd printing will use slightly more subdued colors? whistle

Thanks for the heads up. I looked around online and most sites were out of stock, but Fair Play Games had it, and so I ordered it.

I'm sorry but I can't stop laughing at your comment, "Blood Bowl is too expensive to collect." You realize that a team costs less than the starter for the card game and the rules are free, right? That said, I will probably pick up the starter when it arrives.

Update. After Friday I've played (and bought) only one game on the list. Barons. Barons is not bad but I'll need another play to really evaluate it. Our game got very bogged down towards the end --but I think better use of the knights would have reduced that problem.

I haven't even seen most of the others on my list.

Blood Bowl Team Manager-- Didn't play the demo but I watched others play and after that my interest is not nearly as high. Looked too fiddly for a sports game.

So far I've played: Dust Tactics (disappointing but fun), Cosmic Encounter (hasn't aged well since it was my favorite game in the 80s), Atlantis (Mayfair's light tile game) --not bad, Settlers of America (I liked it but didn't love it), Barons (lots of potential), Alhambra Card game(fun as always), Wacky Wacky West (very light but fun ---too much "screw your neighbor" for me to buy it for my kids); and RoadsterZ (pretty terrible knock off of pitchcar).

Mayfair gaming area --Disappointing. No one showed to teach us "Steam" or "Settlers of America" (even though we pre-purchased tickets) and the booth volunteers were "too busy" to help or teach. Which was crap as they could be seen sitting in groups of 3-4 just chatting. Very lame. The Mayfair booth in the Exhibition Hall was outstanding (in contrast) --engaged volunteers but very, very crowded.

Can anyone tell me why the Exhibition Hall closes at 6 (or 6:30) every night --despite being packed? They don't like making money? I assume its for security reasons but I can't quite figure it out.

In my very limited experience as a volunteer, I think the biggest reason is that the people working the booths want some time to relax and have fun too. For most people in the gaming industry, this is more of a hobby than a capital venture, largely done in their spare time. Very few of these companies would be able to afford multiple staffs of people running the booths, and even less would have people willing to work that long.

Also, the cost of keeping that hall open longer would dramatically increase the space rental costs, which would scare off more of the vendors than could afford it.

Eric probably is correct. From my extensive time in the booth, at about 6 you are dying for a break of any kind. Most people working a booth are either an owner or a friendly volunteer.

Plus, it is hard to get a bite of food in during the day so by 6 you are famished.

I personally wouldn't mind it staying open until 7 so I can peddle games for an extra hour and meet a lot more people.

Great weekend with my friends at Gencon and all the games.

Update on how I did:

1. Quarriors!.

Update: PLAYED. LIKED. BOUGHT.

2. Discworld: Ankh-Morpork

Update: Never saw a glimpse of this at Mayfair or anywhere else.

3. A Few Acres of Snow

Update: Sadly, same here. Not a glimpse.

But I did get to play a prototype of Wallace's new game "Aeroplanes" and our group of 5 loved it (and my friends have never played wallace games before). Lighter than Automobile but very challenging. We played with 6 players (1 more than the limit) but it worked fine. We also got a rule wrong and traveled farther on one turn than permitted. But we really liked it. Cool to play test this draft version at Mayfair's booth.

4.
.
Update: Saw a demo (didn't get to play). Appeared slow and fiddly. Not good for a sports game. Pass.

5. Elder Sign.

Update: There were some demos going on but never squeezed in a game. Still interested.

6. I really like Irondale, and the reviews for Omen: A Reign of War
have been very good, but this is one I'd want to Demo first.

Update: I didn't see this anywhere. cry

7. Rave reviews for Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive Game Set
but another I'd want to Demo first.
Update: Lots of people playing this but I never got a chance to try it. Not in a hurry on this one.

8. Barons

Update: Bought. Played. Liked it. But 2 of my friends didn't like it at all. They all hated the graphics and the 2nd half of the game bogged down as we weren't aggressive enough with the knights (I assume). More plays needed.

All and all, a fun convention.

Hightlight was easily Wallace's "Aeroplanes." 2nd place was Quarriors being as good as advertised.

Lowlight? The Mayfair demos were too crowded but the "Game shepherds" in the exhibit hall were friendly and helpful. Oddly, the "game shepherds" in the Mayfair play area outside the exhibit hall were sometimes unfriendly and unhelpful. Dust Tacticswas disappointing as well

Also, Rio Grande's game room was crowded and seemed much less organized than last year. We stayed away from it this year.
