• CubeSieger Released - July 27
A developer named Rozetta Corporation has released an abstract board game iOS Universal app called CubeSieger and priced it at $1.99. The first sentence in the app's description is "From Japan!". Obviously this must be a highly calculated attempt to make me want to buy it, right? shake Thankfully the app comes with a Lite version which is pretty cool. It comes with the single player game and a building blocks sandbox mode of sorts.

The game itself involves moving a single pawn and adding a series of blocks to the board. The object of the game is to corner your opponent and render him immobile. The app also features online and bluetooth modes for human opponents. Game rules aside, everything in the app is rendered in 3D and seems pretty well done, to the point where I would consider simply having it on my iPad if only as a demonstrator app for showing what the iPad can do. It's that attractive looking.

• Army of Frogs Price Drop - July 27
Big Daddy's Creations' newest iOS board game app, Army of Frogs seems to be doing very well. So BDC is riding that momentum with a nice quick price drop. The Universal version has been dropped to $2.99 and the iPhone version has been dropped to just $0.99. I guess you should get it quick because time's fun when you're having flies. Ribbit.

• Dice Soccer Released - July 28
I won't claim to know that much about this one. What I can tell you is that it is developed by LambdaMu Games, it's iOS Universal, its theme is soccer, it would appear to have you roll dice to play, and it is free. Seems board gamey to me, so I list it here. What do you have to lose?

• Lead Wars Updated - July 29
Now I can tell you a bit more about this one. DemonStudios released this little iOS Universal game app back in November 2010. I discovered Lead Wars for myself just a couple months back and kept looking for an excuse to mention it on the blog. I'm not much of a reviewer, so I felt I had to just wait for some news about it to happen. Well it finally did. Lead Wars has been updated to version 1.2.

The game itself is nothing less than a loving attempt to recreate for iOS devices a version of that old Paper-and-Pencil war game you might have played as a kid. Y'know, the one where you draw tanks and planes and then you hold the pencil upright then try to flick it out in one direction to create a line that "shoots" your opponent? Well this is that game. It is very well done with a dizzying array of options and settings that lie just beneath the simple gameplay. There are attention to detail flourishes like scribble animated explosions and spit-filled verbal sound effects that sound like they are coming from the very mouth of the programmer himself!

It's all really just too cute and fun, though the pencil sliding is very much in the vein of a dexterity game and does take some getting used to. The app brings back fond memories of drawn out binder paper wars passed back and forth to make a boring afternoon in study hall much better.

Anyway, I'm just glad I finally get to bring it to your attention. If it sounds interesting to you, then I recommend checking it out. It's for iOS Universal and priced at $2.99. Because I like this game, I'm not only going to quote what's new in version 1.2, I'm gonna just go ahead and list all of its features as well:

• Disc Drivin' Updated - July 29
Continuing this week's theme of loosened subjectivity, I'll also mention an update to one of my all time favorite iOS board game apps. Pixelocity has released another update for their Pitchcar/Carabande-inspired app, Disc Drivin'. Like some of the best iOS board game apps Disc Drivin' is easily approachable, instantly likeable, and full-featured. And most of all it doesn't require a huge investment of really anything to pay you back in fun.

The latest update features 3 new tracks and the nasty little "flipper" obstacle that instantly propels you into the air. Thankfully Pixelocity has placed them in strategic locations on the tracks designed to get you ahead of the competition. But if you hit them wrong you'll be launched into dead space and suffer the usual spectacular atomizing death of your turn. Here's the official word:

• Incinerator and Alderac Form Partnership to Bring AEG Games to iOS and Mobile - August 1
At the beginning of this week the godslaying Incinerator Studios, developers of the recently released Ascension, and Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) announced a new strategic partnership to bring AEG games to iOS and other mobile platforms. The first game they'll release is one of the latest from AEG, Nightfall. The game will be developed as an iOS Universal app. No further news on release dates or price at this time.

• Doodle Monopoly Released - August 1
I think this sentence(?) pretty much sums it all up quite nicely for this app.
CODESPOT SOFTWARE wrote:
Althought Doodle Monopoly is inherited from the Monopoly game, but Doodle Monopoly will bring you the very interesting discoveries with the interface is designed with hand-drawn style

So if you've been waiting all your life to play a hand-drawn version of Monopoly on your iPad (only) for $1.99. Well, now's your chance.

• iAdmiral Updated - August 2
Yet another update for Piotr Sarnowski's naval warfare iOS app known as iAdmiral. Here's what's washed ashore:
Quote:
What's new

* AI thinking time greatly decreased

* Optimized graphics for decreased memory usage on non-retina displays

* Corrected spelling and grammar errors in Admiralopedia and Video Tutorials (didn't want to 'loose' any fans over it )

* Fixed a bug which sometimes caused the AI fleet to stand still instead of seeking battle.

* Fixed a bug that sometimes prevented a fort being hit animation from playing

...a most iconic app icon.

• Puerto Rico Released - August 4
Ravensburger (powered by Codito) has finally released the iOS board game app version of BGG's all time #1 board game, Andreas Seyfarth's Puerto Rico, for the iPad this week. What more can be said? Apparently quite a lot, judging by various threads of discussion both here and at other sites around the Web. From graphics and user interfaces, to AI, to online play, to price, people are voicing strong opinions on this game. We reviewed the app just shortly before its release. You can read all about it here. If you decide it's for you and you want it now, then hurry because Ravensburger is running a limited time sale on the app for $7.99.

--- EDIT ---
I just read through all of the comments and I've decided to wait and see. That's too bad, I've been looking forward to this one. My biggest concern is for the quality of the AI. It needs to be very good or I will get bored playing it.

How the heck did I not know about Lead Wars until now?! That pencil-flicking game essentially took over my elementary school (and part of my junior high class). It was all the rage, no joke. We all loved crafting elaborate bases to defend.

All they'd have to do is change the name to Doodleopoly and they'd be fine.

I just picked it up and did the tutorial - once you get a hang of the movement and aiming - it promises to be quite fun!

I look forward to leaving work and getting home to spend a little more time on this puppy!

I highly recommend dice soccer. The "players" are die, and some are better than others, with higher values, or different powers triggered by values, sums, pairs, etc. Learn the proper way to use the powers, and you trigger chains of combos until one side wins with the higher value. All up and down a soccer field. And you slowly unlock more powerful player/dice. Sort of a zombie dice meets blood bowl light. Anyone know of similar physical games?

Amazing how all these companies are FINALLY seeing how porting their games to a mobile platform is a good, and rewarding thing to do. It's unfortunate how dumb ass companies (like FFG among others) don't have a clue on what fans want! For example, FFG has a HUGE start with the Arkham Horror iOS game just by its creation of the AA toolkit. Now tell me, how hard would it be for them to add on the "remainder" of the game in order to make it a TRUE AA mobile game??

It's unfortunate that these companies are waiting until their game(s) have become irrelevant.

Very excited to see Incinerator doing new things. Ascension is fantastic and I have always wanted to play Nightfall.

I will admit though, I most want to see Thunderstone on the iPad. With expansions up for purchase. If it would have an online like Ascension I would be in heaven.

Thanks for another great post! I have iAdmiral, but haven't actually played it yet. Too many games, so little time!

I would much have preferred Thunderstone, but I must say I am looking forward to getting Nightfall when it comes out.

Lead Wars sounds cool, and I'll have to grab that to play with my son.

The game's graphics and sound are nice, but I found the gameplay to be extremely repetitive. If there was a way to turn off the die roll animations it might be more interesting.
