Our summer vacation is winding down, so it is time to get back to the Sunday Night Round-up.

This week's gaming started off with a family game of Zooloretto on Friday night.

All of us had played before but as a slight twist I added the petting Zoo and three additional enclosures expansions to the game. Neither expansion seemed to change much but didn't add any additional time either.

My son and I both used the petting zoo, while he also bought the additional enclosure for elephants. Unfortunately, he overspent early and could not obtain more money, which really hampered him in the endgame. As we neared the endgame, it was apparent that either me or my daughter would win, with my wife and son trailing.

On the final turn, I got out quickly with an animal I could use while my daughter got stuck with an animal she had to put in the barn. That proved to be the difference.

Final scores: Larry 24, Daughter 23, Melissa 16, Son 14.

Next up was a game that Melissa suggested: Rummikub.

The kids have played Rummy but it was there first time playing Rummikub. It was easy to explain and we were quickly playing. My son got the hang of it and went out first, jumping to a 150 point lead over second. I was able to go out the next two rounds, however, and captured the win.

Final Scores: Larry 184, Son 77, Melissa -100, Daughter -161.

Saturday we had to go to a wedding but we had time for a game after lunch. The kids wanted a Rummikub rematch so we played again. Everything went my way, as I went out all 3 rounds and claimed a huge win.

On Sunday afternoon my son wanted to play a game he had received as a present, U-Build Connect 4.

What a truly wretched game. He had already put it together but the board was fiddly, the gameplay fiddly and the strategy non-existent. It was extremely difficult to get a checker into two columns and it was almost entirely luck if you did so. My son won the game, but I had long since tired of it by that time. I won't say that I will never play it again, but I will say I will never suggest it.

Winner: Son.

Sunday evening we finished up the week with a rousing game of Survive: Escape from Atlantis!

Everyone, with the exception of Melissa, enjoys sending sea monsters, sharks, and whales after the other players and the family plays a loud bloodthirsty game.

My daughter quickly got 3 people to safety, which proved to be the only ones she rescued. My son had three people in shallow water, only to neglect to move them. Of course, a sea monster was moved on consecutive turns to eat everyone before he could save them. Whales destroyed no less than 6 boats and the sharks swooped in to eat most of the swimmers.

When the volcano exploded, I had rescued 5 people, my son had 3, Melissa had saved 3 and so had my daughter.

But we play with scoring rule where each person has a number on the bottom that indicates their value. When we added up the scores, my 5 people were worth 14 points while both children scored 15. Melissa finished last with 9. With the right group, this is a wonderful game.

Final Scores: Son and Daughter 15, Larry 14, Melissa 9.

I can't help it if my altruistic self wants to save everyone! Of course I was accused (by SOMEONE) of wanting multi-player solitaire. Maybe, but that's beside the point.

I never play Zooloretto without the Petting Zoo, I like the extra money it adds to the game, giving you more choices to make (a good thing in my opinion). It distances it from the original Coloretto and makes it more distinct in my mind too.

Oh and I am really tempted by Survive (although my 8 year old seems prone to sulks if he gets targeted by stuff).

I would have gladly used the petting zoo, but I could never get the requisite pair of animals to mate! My poor little zoo had no babies the entire game.

My kids will sulk on occasion. But since everyone gets hit in Survive, it isn't too bad. Plus we talk about how you will be attacking everyone in the game beforehand so it has always gone well for us. (At least so far)

I know how it will go. One will want to move the shark for everyone and will graciously allow his brother the dolphin.

He'll make it talk as well, so it will be pretty funny.
