Glory to Rome Beautification Project Now Live on Kickstarter

For all those who have complained about the "graphic uniqueness" present in Carl Chudyk's Glory to Rome, now's your chance to put your money where your mouth is as Cambridge Games Factory has launched a Kickstarter project for a "Black Box" edition of Glory to Rome that uses the Heiko Günther redesign that has been kicking around on BGG.

What's more, Carter notes that Günther is "joining the Cambridge Games Factory leadership team as Creative Director", which suggests new looks for CGF titles down the road.

If you pledge at the $175 level, you even receive a "handwritten letter of apology for bad art from Ed" Carter, CGF's Managing Director. What a bonus!

Boy, the artwork sucks in the above new version!! I don't think I could play this new version of the game! I'll stick with my old version.

[Sorry, couldn't help it. Seems this lame comment comes up in every discussion about this game. I just wanted to beat the rush to post it.]

As someone who has been spouting on for years how much I love this game (I recently wrote a 250 word NO GAME/NO LIFE review for a Japanese games magazine), it seemed obvious I should go for the LETTER version...100 quid? That's 2 months of Magic: The Gathering drafting right there!

You know you all want this - props to Ed for showing some self-deprecating humour (heaven knows he needs a laugh after the last few weeks).

Now - anyone fancy a pimped-up Scandaroon re-print?

seriously? 20 days left until the kickstarter project deadine? seems more like a gimmick to me than anything else. what's the rush CGF? if it is really going to take 21k to put this together, why not give the project at least 90 days to build up some steam?

The cynic in me suddenly understands the whole Uchronia affair and its timing much better.

Still, I'll probably get in on this. I'm not really that much more impressed with this design than the original (and still wish they'd gone with something more like the international versions), but I would like to have a copy that won't fall apart on me quick so quickly.

From the Kickstarter blog:

Black Box Edition?

So the cards look great and all, but what we really want to know is what does this black box itself look like?

A beautification of the plastic clam-shell ... could it really be true? [breaks down with emotion]

Something about correlation and causation comes to mind.

20 days does seem aggressive to me.

Ditto me. It's not worth $40 dollars for the same game with different art. A box would be nice. But I can make that myself if it ever gets annoying enough.

Definitely looks a lot more professional than the original. Has an artistic look in it that could almost be seen in a museum.

Given that, I must admit that I am not a big fan of highly stylized/abstracted minimalist art on games (i.e. I'm not into that art of The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow), but, you can't please everyone.

Having watched the video and seen his paper-cut method, I think that's pretty cool even if it's not exactly my cup of tea, and I appreciate this new art more knowing his method than if I thought it had all been done on a computer from the beginning. So I'm glad they put that in the vid.

Never played the game, honestly, but I am more attracted to the old art - it makes me think of Asterix or something. I just hate the amazingly bright card colors. That is actually the reason I haven't purchased.

The new art looks like someone went crazy with Dover Pictorial Archive books.

Let's hope this means people will be selling off their 1st edition copies for 10 bucks, then I might actually bite!

The project is one-quarter funded after less than ten hours has passed, so I think it's a safe bet.

Yeah, I have qualms about playing the proposed new edition in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. One nice thing about "garish" card colors is that it makes it easy to see the colors of your opponents' clients and materials.

Regarding original GtR, I have seen few (if any) card games with six colors that have better color distinction. And I have played this game with at least 2 color-blind people who usually avoid card games with multiple colored suits, but had no problems with the GtR cards (probably because CGF avoided green as a material color).

And maybe this is just me, but if/when the redesign is published, won't the other language editions still be better-looking?

The black box itself looks nice, though. If it's large enough to hold a sleeved GtR deck I'd think about getting a copy of the reprint just for the box.

Congratulations on the new job, Heiko! I caught wind of (was informed of) the redesign on the 29th, and I've been itching to congratulate you, and hoping it would be sooner rather than later. Sooner it is! Congratulations, and may you shake things around the CGF—undoubtably to everyone's benefit.

My wife, who will play almost everything else but despises the original art, now looks forward to playing this game, thanks to you.

No. I like this design best. It's absolutely stunning. A true professional made this.

Honestly, I didn't mind the original art nor the box at all. In fact, the plastic clamshell box seemed sturdier, and with a "snap locking" mechanism, you didn't need to worry about the box getting propped open in one's bag.

The collector's side of me still pledged none of the less, as I also think this new art style is cool.

And yeah, as people have noticed, a formal apology will cost you $175 Reminds me of how in the Battlefield Earth DVD, the directory actually apologizes for making the movie in the one of the features.

Nice... but I'm not really all that bothered by the original version, and would be even more tempted to pick up the Polish version if the opportunity arises.
Still, there are 20 days left for me to have a willpower failure... and if it's just a few pledges short at the end I might feel compelled to help out

Pledged so fast!

Funny story: played this game for the first time two nights ago. Loved it, but complained loudly and obnoxiously about the artwork the entire time. I was drunkenly baffled as to why they couldn't just find a young hungry graphic designer to at least just make it look A LITTLE better.

We ended up talking for a while about what a redesign might look like.

Lo and behold, I log onto the 'Geek this morning and what do I see? A beautiful redesign on Kickstarter that looks beautiful, elegant and thematic and fun.

Clicked pledge in two seconds flat.

It's like I willed it into existence with the power of Obnoxious Drunken Complaining.

Seriously? You're going to complain about the length of the KS drive?

You obviously heard about it - either pledge or don't. And if you want it to succeed, tell your friends to go check it out.

This art is just bad.

The icons are neat and could be an improvement over the cartoons, but all of the text is just floating around in the whitespace. You need visual differentiators between the various sections. Notice how on any other card game out there (magic, race for the galaxy, lord of the rings, doesn't even matter the genre) there are lines and different colored backgrounds behind the different sections such as the name, description and costs.

If this was done by an actual artist I would expect more than just clipart, and if this was done by a graphic designer then there is no excuse for the floating text or doing things like splitting up a paragraph on the pictured "sewer" card.

Looks like it was thrown together by some guy learning illustrator in their spare time. That'd be fine for a print-and-play project, but $21k? I think not.

Your design sensibilities don't equate to moral precepts. (And neither do those of those who hate the original art.)

I find the art and layout attractive and well thought out. And yes, I've done design in my time—professionally, in the publishing industry.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's objectively good—any more than your dislike means it's objectively bad.

Style is in the eye of the beholder. And so is clip art. Clip art doesn't equate to "simple drawing," though. It equates to "mass-produced, royalty-free" (often line, or screened line) art.

I have no idea why people think 20 days is "aggressive" for a GtR upgrade.

On the Kickstarter page, it refers to this as the "initial print run."

On the other hand, I'd be pleasantly surprised if that happens. But surprised nonetheless.

Quote:

Well, as "aggressive" was my word, I suppose I have some explaining to do. To me, an average of over $1k/day seems like a lot to hope for.

I'm happy to be proven wrong, but it wasn't at all certain to me at the time I posted my opinion that $21k over 20 days was a lock, even for GtR. It does look like it's on the right trajectory, though.

The thing is, this game is a known quantity. There probably aren't a whole lot of "undecideds" here...just like "kickstarting GtR" is the easiest decision a lot of us have ever made, "not kickstarting GtR" is also a pretty easy decision to make here. I'm fine with the old art, at the old price. I'm not going to be checking the page for updates once a day, gradually succumbing to temptation, like I might for other Kickstarter games. There isn't really anything I especially value in this opportunity, and what's worse is that I KNOW it.

This game has gotten a great initial burst of funding, but if it doesn't cross or get close to the $21k threshold early in its funding round (and I admit, based on today's performance, that's a big if), 20 days might not be enough to close the gap.

Yeah, that was the first thing that crossed my mind too. I have to respect Carl for being quiet during the whole circus. It seems to me they really leveraged BGG to generate hype and then drop this Kickstarter campaign. Hope BGG is getting some much needed advertizing dollars.

I like the art, and if you watch the video, you'll understand it's definitely not clip-art.

$35 isn't a bad price if the game were to get a lot of play, but I don't see that happening for me. Too bad, as the artwork is really nice, minimalist, and classic-looking. I'd like to add the game to my collection.

What happens if they pass the $21k threshold before the 20 days are up? Can people still contribute after that?

What happens if a project reaches its funding goal before time expires?

Nothing really. Projects continue to accept pledges until the funding deadline. There is no option to end a project early.

No, the project is taken down. If it meets its goal, your pledge gets transferred to the project. If not, your moneys stays with you and the project is shut down.

No, the project is taken down. If it meets its goal, your pledge gets transferred to the project. If not, your moneys stays with you and the project is shut down.

You answered the wrong question. He was asking what happens if they meet their goal EARLY, not what happens if they don't meet their goal by the deadline.

On the other hand, I'd be pleasantly surprised if that happens. But surprised nonetheless.

I have no idea why people think 20 days is "aggressive" for a GtR upgrade.

Agreed, although the 21 days is more about giving everyone who didn't see the kickstarter today or tomorrow or in the next few weeks some time to get the perks of being a contributor.

I spotted the kickstart first at $185 (either early this morning or late last night). It's now at almost $11,000. Someone who WANTS to support it WILL miss it if it doesn't last 3 weeks.

It would be nice to have the option to spend $75 to get not 1 game and a T-shirt, but 2 games. But since it's tied to one's Amazon account, and since you can only choose 1 radio button as your sole reward, doesn't look like that's possible.

You might think that, but it's unfortunately not the case. There are quite a few copies in my gaming group, including one of my own, and not a single 'snap lock' has lasted more than a year. Just about every copy is now held closed with a rubber band. A big part of the problem is that the player boards actually sit in the way of the closing mechanism, which wears out both the box and the boards/sheets.

OH I agree. I've not done any KickStarters yet but the ones I've considered are the one's where you can get multiple copies for nominally less than the single copy. Reason? 2 or 3 people can go in together and get simply the GAME itself.

As for GtR? I've been a big fan of it since I first got my copy all those years ago. I LOVE the game and the art work I find cute. As a friend says the graphic design agreeably has something to be desired but as the game is so good as it is I would never let that inhibit me from playing this game. I don't feel any need to have this version of the game for $35 when I paid $12.99 for it originally at Cool Stuff Inc. My copy is still working just fine, in it's clam shell with a rubber band around it. Pull that bad boy out and people have fun playing an awesome game.

I love that CGF did this though as there are lots of people who are put off by the art/design and this game NEEDS to be played by everyone so for those who grab this good on you.

At the end of the kickstarter period, assuming the project gets funded, my understanding is that the pledges will then turn into payments and CGF will receive both the money pledged (minus kickstarter fees) and the names and email addresses of the pledgees. At that point it should be possible to ask if anyone would like a second copy to add to their order and take a separate payment by PayPal. We'll need to be fairly quick though, because there won't be much time between the end of the pledge and our deadline if we'd like to get the game in print by Essen. I'll need around 4-6 weeks for the badges and will only produce a few over the number of pledges.

Me too.
I understand the need for a boxed version as my plastic case is showing some signs of wear, but don't really see or feel any need for a redesign of the art.

Looks like a reaction to the Uchronia mess and not much more than that...

Bravo to Ed and CGF for ever so begrudgingly listening to their audience. I think the overwhelming speed at which this has taken off speaks to both the support this game has and how the graphic design and presentation of a well loved game actually does matter to it's fanbase.

Boo me you may, but I was waiting for the (now questionable) release of Uchronia, simply because it sounded like it would be similar to GtR, and since I don't own GtR, i would wait to see which game better suited my tastes (or possibly get both), Uchronia had the edge on design at the time, but I am pledging to this project as soon as I finish this reply, because of one simple thing:

Glory to Rome has much acclaim and this set has OUTSTANDING design.

The reasons I don't currently own GtR are simple and widespread:
-The plastic shell is a rather cheap and awkward to store box.
-The card stock was pretty low grade. If I love this game as much as I'm told I'm going to, I will need well made cards.
-The DESIGN on the cards is HORRIBLE.

Now let me point out the difference in that last point versus what I feel others arguments are. I do not at all mind the cartoony drawings on the cards, I don't "like" them, but they're acceptable and inoffensive to me.

What I dislike is the general layout of the cards. The single colour design layout and that nausea-inducing light to what gradation for the text. I am honestly more turned off by the design of Barons, but I don't like Barons at all so I don't have any interest in what it looks like.

The reason I waited on GtR is simple, I did not want to buy the same game twice. I don't have money to burn, as it seems CGF also does not, so I was waiting for a point when I was comfortable that there would never be any kind of better quality copy available. It looks like my wait has paid off. My pledge is incoming, again thank you for listening to your customers.

Negative. We had planned to do the Kickstarter Black Box version some months ago, and would have done it sooner if not for the Uchronia infringement (which set us back a couple of weeks).

No, you're not the only one. This new artwork is bad. It doesn't fit the game and the cards aren't as easily identifiable.

This is actually kind of funny. Cambridge Games just can't seem to pick artwork that pleases everyone (or even a majority of people).

Apologies for my ignorance, I'm fairly new to the whole idea of Kickstarter. My question is, what happens after this? Will the game actually see a retail release after the Kickstarter drive is over? I've been considering getting Glory to Rome for a while, but I can't make a pledge right now, and $35/$40 feels like a lot of money for a card game considering I can get the current retail edition of the game for less than half of that. So will I be able to buy a copy of this edition of the game from my FLGS/OLGS a few months down the road?

This thread is hilarious. People willing to shell out more money for a game they already own or can get for $18. I will never understand the hate for this game's original artwork. It's a CARD GAME. Not the Mona Lisa. I like the cartoon art a lot more than this boring redo. Much easier to see who has what with the original colors. So many new games to buy that one could spend their $35 on.

look what you can get if you pledge $750! sign me up! (sarcasm)

If this was a drive to get medical aid to someone who desperately needed it, I could understand it, but pledging for new artwork on a beer and pretzels card game?

Kudos to cambridge for sticking with the clamshell on 'barons'. Easy to store. Don't ever change.

Ed has made it clear that you'll be able to buy this, at some point, somewhere (hopefully your FLGS will stock it). It will still be $35 though.

No. People willing to shell out (sometimes more) money for artwork they don't already own and can't get for $18.

Or the game. Let's accept your wording. With different artwork (or layout and design), it's not the same game. The game is the sum of its parts.

The artwork and design are part of the gameplay—as I assume you'd agree if it were all in shades of blacks and charcoals, making the cards very difficult for you to read.

See, I assume there's artwork and design you wouldn't play this game with. Imagine—the current artwork happens to fulfill that role for many people. Some people get (actual, real) headaches after trying to play with the current cards. Why begrudge them an opportunity to play the game?

And did I hear Ed mention higher-quality materials (card stock and so on)?

Like it or not, the clamshell doesn't work well for many people. Sure it does for you—so you keep your copy, and let people buy what suits them.

Let people make their own choices, mind your own business.

Absolutely. thumbsup

More versions of the game should mean more satisfied people, but this redesign is really bringing out all the haters (kind of confusing, really)... I'm dropping $35 for a game with production values and art that will get to the table with my girlfriend and roomate, a much better investment than an $18 game that would sit on my shelf ignored.

If you like the original, good, keep it and don't complain about this.

People buy new and expensive televisions, cars, clothes, houses and more despite owning similar items that already work or having access to cheaper options. When I moved to a new house in June 2011, I gave away my fifteen-year-old 21" TV – couldn't get even $10 at a yard sale! - and bought a new 47" HDTV. The old television worked fine, but this new one is miles better.

Here's an example of the cards from AH's Civilization, which is 30 years old.

This new edition, with its very limited use of color and its use of a retro generic "Geneva" font seems to just be on par with a 30 year old design.

I think the cards you posted look fantastic. I love line art and minimal design. When I first saw the art for the "black box" edition, before it was going to be published, I wanted a copy simply because i found it so gorgeous (ok, I admit, I'm interested in the game in general).

Voicing opinions about art is fine (especially to a publisher!!), but arguing about it is silly, taste is very subjective.

look what you can get if you pledge $750! sign me up! (sarcasm)

If this was a drive to get medical aid to someone who desperately needed it, I could understand it, but pledging for new artwork on a beer and pretzels card game?

Kudos to cambridge for sticking with the clamshell on 'barons'. Easy to store. Don't ever change.

Good for you. Don't buy it. I love the art in this version and HATE the art in the previous version. All my friends feel the same and I can't get it played.

It's called subjectivity. I like it, you don't. Telling me that you think no one should like it because you don't is ridiculous. Just move along.

It's a question of priorities, especially for a small company. As you can see by our hiring of Heiko Gunther, we are certainly trying to choose both

Agreed. But beggars can't be choosers

The redesign is definately a step in the right direction.

Any chance of a future Kickstarter for an English language version of the same quality as the Polish one? This with the recent rules updates would be amazing!

Failing that, why not license a more prosperous games publisher to release a better quality English language edition.

Oh, I agree. The ugly silhouettes just mirror those grungy line drawings! Nothing churns the stomach like a good line drawing in an antiquated style, I can't agree with you more. And Heiko's use of garish colors such as fuschia, as well as the bright banner strips slapped across the top of the cards—and did I mention the ugly line art, I mean the straight-out-of-a-70s-Sunday-school-book line art? Well—

—and the colors, don't forget the overbearing, too-saturated, nearly glowing colors

Just makes me wanna puke.

Kickstarter canceled, man.

*Whew* That was close.

Because how many colors Heiko used (never mind which ones, just how many), and the typeface he chose, totally encompass a full and complete description of all aspects of Heiko's design.

Sheesh.

I would take either, but I agree. The black field-and-spread eagle combo looks too much like Nazis. I mean, I play wargames, so I'm not bothered just seeing the thing, but it's just distracting (to me) from the theme they're trying to get going.

83% funded, by the way!

You're getting it the wrong way around I think. Because nazi symbolism and aesthetics are heavily inspired by the roman empire, doesn't mean anyone trying to make a game about a roman empire should have to resolve to artwork that looks like the 80'ies threw up on it

(And on that note, I, unlike many others, dont mind the cartoony clipart. But the background colors really looks like something that should have died in the 80'ies).

No, no, I realize that. But since the Third Reich is more recent in our memory than Rome, I like the black eagle-on-white field better than the white-and-red-eagle-on black field. It doesn't stir up such instinctive visual memories in me.

Obviously Heiko isn't aiming for any such thing.

Edited for color, to not disrupt the discussion.

You know, I wish people would stop wrongly invoking the so-called Godwin's Law.

It's a stopper for discussion, and has become a point of stifling speech. Are there certain subjects that cannot now be mentioned when it will be more helpful to do so?

I nearly edited to say "WWII" rather than what I instinctually did at first, because I suspected someone would do exactly this.

Read what I say. Don't filter using a law that doesn't apply:
"Although deliberately framed as if it were a law of nature or of mathematics, its purpose has always been rhetorical and pedagogical: I wanted folks who glibly compared someone else to Hitler or to Nazis to think a bit harder about the Holocaust."

I'm not being glib. I think the art can spur unpleasant associations, and like the white backing better because of it.

No, Godwin's law is not invoked. He wanted flippant Nazi references to lose the hyperbole and simply say, This behavior is oppressive! or That's another step toward a police state!

What should I say in this situation? The juxtaposition of style and color reminds me of Soviet Russia? Red China, perhaps?

Obviously it's unintended. But the visual snapshot unintentionally created can strike the wrong note in many people's social memory. And I think the black eagle-on-cream field design is helpful in that regard.

Misusing a tool (GL) designed for serious social commentary and behavior shaping to ostracize uses of a particular word when it is used to further awareness of that social commentary is counterproductive to Mike Godwin's intent, and to that of any of us (including you) who care about what happened, and about our social memory of it. Using it as faux humor is irresponsible.

Promote awareness, not silence.

'Mind your own business...' It's jerkoff responses like this that explain why I don't bother posting on BGG threads more than twice a year.

I bought it, and it is my business to comment on this insanity about raising $21,000 for a CARD GAME.

Headaches from the cards? Sure. I also heard someone had a seizure and sued. Melodrama is in no short supply regarding GTR.

Even if these new cards were sprinkled with diamond dust, it's EXACTLY THE SAME GAME. You're joking, right?

The clamshell doesn't work? I can understand this: It's made up of many complex parts. I don't know what to do, except bitch on game threads about how it offends my precious sensibilities to use a rubber band. The hell with that! I've got class. Let me pledge $50 so I can avoid this rubber band shame and pretend I'm playing a different game because the artwork changed.

There are some people who want to buy this game and don't want it to look like ass. Plain and simple. Please allow us this indulgence.

+1 for the white box.

I'd like to throw another idea in : why not keep the title in Latin, at least for the kickstarter backers ? It would not make any sense to change the name of the game for a general edition but since all of us backers know what we're getting, it would make a good limited edition/sweetener.

Congratulation for CGF for the success of this kickstarter !

In my view, there's four types of games:

* fun, pretty games
* fun, ugly games
* unfun, pretty games
* unfun, ugly games

Since I have only a limited amount of times to play games, I choose from the first category only. I'm quite certain this game is tons of fun, but the original game is, hands down, the ugliest game I've ever set sight on (mainly because of the game's awful, garish colors, but also the cheapo typography and junky cartoons). I look forward to you providing counterexamples, so I can avoid those too in the future.

Edit: just browsed your collection...I didn't see anything your collection that was even nearing the ugliness of Glory to Rome.

I think the thing that bugs me most about it though is that the whole production of GtR, from the amateur graphic design, to the cartoon artwork, to the crap case, was simply a way for Ed to save money. If only he spent a few hundred dollars and hired a real graphic designer, we wouldn't have to bicker about stupid stuff like this.

Come now! Surely there's some ugly and unfun games!

Anyway, I am buying this because it looks so nice. But I own the original, and would have played it. I'd just rather play this version—I'll enjoy looking at it while I play. I find it really beautiful.

Fun, pretty games...sounds like the criteria of a six year old who plays with her pet bear. Do you want tea with that? I do this really weird thing where I play games and base my opinion of them on the game play.

Garish colors! Oooo! Look, it's GREEN! Look, it's BLUE! My eyes!!! It burns!

I really am astonished that anyone would actually be angered that people actually like the game and want to buy a nicer looking and better produced version of it. It's ridiculous that you don't just ignore the thread. You could come on here and say "I like the old art just fine" if you like. But to say we're childish because we like the look of the new art and want to spend a little money on it is, itself, childish and unnecessary.

It's called subjective taste. We're different. We can talk about why, but you can't tell me that I'm wrong because my taste is different, or how I shouldn't buy the new version because you wouldn't, and expect to be taken seriously.

Oh, and just because you think it's ridiculous to spend $35 on the redesign, I upped my pledge to the $75 level. devil

When I thumbed the poll supporting this redesign, I didn't expect anything to come of it. I was wrong.

In case earlier pledgees haven't returned to the Kickstarter page after making their pledges, the latest updates, from the bottom of the page:

Glory to Rome Kickstart wrote:
FAQ

Where are the FAQs for this project?

I've been answering the first questions that have been coming up on the announcement thread on BoardGameGeek:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/681223/rome-demands-beau...

Last updated: Monday Aug 1, 12:05pm EDT

What if there isn't a game store near me?

We will ship your game anywhere in the world for $5 extra. Also, the $5 is per address, not per game, so if we have multiple pledges going to the same place then we only need $5 once - we'll work out the details once the Kickstarter has completed

Last updated: Monday Aug 1, 9:16pm EDT

Can I collect my game at Essen / BGG.CON?

YES! Absolutely. It will also work to collect your game from any games club attended regularly by a CGF team member. Just let us know when we ask for shipping details

Last updated: Monday Aug 1, 9:22pm EDT

What the "Rome demands BEAUTY!" T-Shirt, Limited Edition Enamel Pin" will look like? Will we see a preview before the pledge time is up?

Heiko's on vacation for two weeks - we'll aim to get previews up in the last week of the offer. Right now I'm expecting that both the Enamel Pin and T-Shirt will match the cover image (Roman Eagle).

Last updated: Monday Aug 1, 9:33pm EDT

Any change that you'll get rid if the incorrect Middle Ages spelling "Coliseum" and use the original "Colosseum"?

Yes, will do. Any other feedback on either spelling or images please email ideas@cambridgegames.com and we'll look into it

Last updated: Monday Aug 1, 9:36pm EDT

How / when do we indicate which store we want it shipped to, and do we ok it with them or do you?

Once the project completes we'll send a survey asking where you want the game shipped, etc. At that point we'll get in contact with your store to make sure they're OK receiving the game. You are welcome to give them a heads up in the interim, though.

Last updated: Monday Aug 1, 9:47pm EDT

What's the deal with CONCRETE? $40 for a T-Shirt?

The big deal here is "Advanced shipping". These sets will be shipped by air straight from the Factory to the US + Europe (along with the review copies, etc.) and then forwarded on to you from there - the other sets are going to come by Boat and arrive about a month later.

I tried to edit the entry to make it clearer but (understandably!) Kickstarter won't let me change benefits after people have pledged for them!

IN ADDITION - The first 30 CONCRETE Tier sign ups will get rulebook credit as "Architects"

Last updated: Tuesday Aug 2, 12:33am EDT

Rulebook Credits - Leader, Patrons, Architects

I can't change the text, but I just had a great suggestion that the MARBLE tier should be called "Patrons" in the Rulebook. Also, we'll give the first 30 CONCRETE tier pledges rulebook credit as "Architects"

Kudos to Chris G for the suggestion!

Well, here is why it is awesome:
* You get a bunch of laughs out of it. Nice to know your day can be brightened with chuckles. Hope you have a smile on your face.
* Sometimes people want an upgrade in the look and packaging for their game.
* Not every card game is a filler game. And a number of people feel this isn't either.

So, in short, there are three GREAT reasons for this, which more than offset your boorish and insulting attitude. If you don't like it, don't get it. Anyhow, since you are SO right about this, I hope they can send you your favorite cookies to your store of choice. Maybe having those won't make you as cranky and feeling a need to post on a forum somewhere expressing your outrage and anger at things that don't really matter in the big scheme of things.

As for me, the remake is of interest to me. It is good to get better artwork in my opinion and hold out hope the card stock is better.

I think it's a bit adorable that for some time now, GtR defenders (I shan't say apologists ) have been claiming that the game is good enough that the art is irrelevant, or that the art simply isn't important to the enjoyment of the game, and now that there exists an edition of the game with "new & improved" artwork (at least in the opinion of some 553 persons at the time of this writing), certain persons are crawling out of the woodwork to poo-poo the Black Box edition! "This artwork sucks! Why would anyone want to play a game with artwork like this?"

Look, I've been aware of Glory to Rome for a while now, and I've always avoided a purchase because the artwork didn't appeal to me. Whether that decision was correct or not, as soon as the Kickstarter page went up, I pledged, because here was an edition of a very well-regarded game with artwork that appealed to me. Folks who like (or honestly do disregard) the original art can continue to purchase and enjoy the $18.00 version. It's not being replaced! Folks who like the new art have the option of spending $35.00, either as a Kickstarter pledge or later at their FLGS.

The option.

I was going to wait on this one until I could buy it retail... but the inclusion of the 18 promo cards got me to back it. I really hate spending the $5 for shipping, but since there are no local gamestores around me anywhere, I had little choice.

So, I backed it and added it to my backed games geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/70177/item/1759013#ite...

ehh the new art looks too abstract and cold, even though the old graphics are terrible, it reminds us that it is only a game and that we play for fun. This looks too formal...

edit: just saw the polish version, wow! surprise that's the one I'd want to pledge for.

Is it as "adorable" when someone describes the current version as looking "like ass"? And assorted other comments...

(I'm just saying...)

And I have a copy of the current version. Haven't yet backed the Kickstarter one, but might. I, like some others, think I prefer the Polish version. But about the only Polish I know is "Prosze piwo" and "Jestem głodny".

I will probably be the minority voice here, but I really do not like the artwork on this new one. Which is fine, of course, except that if future games from Cambridge feature artwork such as is on this redesign, as implied by the inclusion of this version's designer on the Cambridge design team, I personally will be put quite off. It's dull, blended, and isn't visually appealing to me at all. Further, the use if diagonal colored stripes on the materials is extremely uncomfortable to look at in this design.

Again, I'm just one voice, but this game is fine the way it is. I don't see how this whole thing created such an uproar. (except maybe the lack of a box for it )

I respect and appreciate anyone (in this case Heiko Gunther) for working on this sort of thing, but I don't look forward to purchasing games from Cambridge with similar graphic designs as this. If you do graphic design for more Cambridge games in the future, Heiko, I hope they aren't all like this.

Cheers,

Jacovis

Judging by the overwhelming response on Kickstarter, I'd say you in the minority view. $27,000+ in 3 days when they expected to maybe hit $21,000 in 21 days...

Seems like we're saying this a lot lately - I'm glad you like the previous art - they aren't taking that away. As for me, I absolutely ADORE the new artwork.

This topic is really funny. I haven't seen in any other game such a mismatch of opinions on the graphics.
The simplicity, the colors, the stripes, everything says WIN to my eyes. The other editions, italian, french, polish and other fan made are all way too messy and overloaded to appeal to me.
We should all be extremely glad to have 2 versions ! And I would like to thank Ed deeply for the way he invests himself in his products, especially since it seems to be far from his main job.

The regular "cartoony" GTR sells for as little as ~$14 by the deep discounters (plus shipping costs) and I'd expect this new version to be discounted to ~$20 (again plus shipping costs) by those same deep discounters.

Logically it may be a bit cheaper to wait until it hits the online retail chains BUT as others have pointed out... the nice bonuses and promo items you get from the KickStarter program will make this a worthwhile purchase
to many.

$35 isn't really a huge amount of money for a game like this if it indeed gets played a lot.

No, but that's my point. Up until now, there's only been the one version of the artwork (in English, anyway), and the people who like that artwork have sometimes vehemently opposed anyone who has criticized said artwork.

I just find it ironic that now there's a new option available, and some of the defenders of the original artwork have become that which they once fought: art snobs!

(And for the record, I don't think the original artwork looks "like ass," it just doesn't do it for me. The Black Box artwork does.)

You would think that they would be glad that more people will now be playing GtR. Opposing a project that will bring more players into the fold, when that project doesn't do anything but question one's conflation of one's self-identity with one's preferences, seems very dog in the manger.

I started playing this game recently and I really like it. I like the old artwork and the new artwork as well. I just pledged 'wood' on kickstarter and I am happy that one of the options is to get the expansion in the old artwork as well, so I will end up with two fully loaded games!
