Time.
I have a feeling I’ll be writing a lot about time as I write this blog since I think time has a bigger impact on my gaming life than anything else.
When I was in college with a metabolism that could ignore sleep and the ability to schedule classes to allow for late nights, time wasn’t such a big deal. However, now I have a full time job, a committed relationship, and adult responsibilities. (Luckily for me, my fiancé is also a gamer )
And, in the end, these are all good things. I’m happier now then I was back then. Growing up is actually pretty good, apart from my back. But that does mean I have less time for games.
So I try to be very careful about carving out time in my schedule for gaming. I want to game but I have learned from past experience that when I let gaming become my priority, every other part of my life suffers.
That’s one of the reasons why European family games appeal to me more and more. They are designed to be played in an hour or two. The days of eight-hour games are pretty much behind me, although I do try to get in Advanced Civilization every once in a while.
Dominion in particular, due to the fact that each game is a different puzzle to solve but each game generally takes less than a half hour, has been a great boon to my schedule.
So, as I grow older and my life grows more complicated, short playing time combined with a wealth of decisions is what I find myself looking for more and more in games.
