Busy painting minis: Dark Ages Welsh

Well, I’ve had a week and a half of vacation and put some of that time to good use painting miniatures. Popular decision!

These are 28mm Gripping Beast British/Welsh warriors from the Dark Ages, which I purchased in a moment of enthusiasm after trying out their upcoming skirmish game Saga. I’ve not painted any 28s for a fair old while, but wanted to make the best job of these I could. This involved purchasing some Foundry triad paints and plenty of LBMS shield transfers (which were a doddle to use, even for clumsy old me). Yeah yeah, I’m still not the best miniatures painter, and it’s intimidating looking at these blown up BIG, but I’m happy with these. I have another nine horsemen to paint and then six Irish warriors.

(Click on the images to link into their captions)

This gives me a four point force for Saga (six points when the horsies canter in), and a really wide choice for Song of Arthur and Merlin and my Dark Ages The Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game games. I’ve also invested in some Warbases stands to use the minis for Dux Bellorum and maybe De Bellis Antiquitatis.

The photos for Dux Bellorum show dice being used to mark Cohesion (red for nobles, white for ordinary troops), and gaming gems to mark Leadership Points. This is only 14 points of a full 32 point army for Dux Bellorum, but I’ll keep working on these; I usually play using 15mm minis but would like to scale up. After many years of not enjoying painting, I’m back on a roll.

If I can do it, so can any other lapsed painters . . . give it a go!

Ah, I can help you prepare to part with your money

The army lists are pretty simple. One point gives you 4 Hearthguard OR 8 Warriors OR 12 Levies, so if you have a four point army, you have a free choice of how to make it up from those choices. For the Normans, Hearthguard or Warriors can be mounted, and one lot of dismounted Warriors may have crossbows. Levy have bows.

You also need one figure for your Warlord.

So you could do a four point army very cost-effectively with 4 units of 4 Hearthguard each plus 1 Warlord (17 figures), or go for a more balanced force with maybe one unit of 4 mounted Hearthguard, two units of 8 foot Warriors each, and one unit of 12 Levy with bows, plus your Warlord (33 figures).

Hope that makes sense and encourages you to grab those figures!

Thanks Kevin! I think the shield transfers make a big difference in making them look better than they'd be if I'd painted them freehand...

Hi Dan,

Do you think Gripping Beast or Wargames Foundry could be persuaded to put together some small army packs for Dux rules use?

I've been using cardboard counters instead of figures, as I suffer from acute "sausage finger syndrome", but could be tempted to try a few 28mm figures out.

To the miniatures outsider, these lumps of lead do seem awfully expensive...

Hi Mark. Gripping Beast have a copy of the rules so hopefully they will. I think a couple of 15mm manufacturers will do too. On a tighter budget, there are some great 20mm plastics for the Late Roman period, well worth a look. I stopped using soft plastic because of the paint peeling, but I think the 'magic dip' method overcomes that (if that phrase makes sense?!) ...
