Here are my picks of the most powerful and potent Basic Set Creatures, broken down by element:
Earth: Venus Wurm
Venus Wurm has solid ATK and DEF values. Besides that, the Wurm has a very powerful ability, which would need some errata as the card says you get to put the top X cards from your Archive back under your Spellbook with X being its current DEF value. That would mean if it dies in battle, you would get no cards back. What it is supposed to say is that you get back cards equal to its initial maximum DEF value. So usually you'd get 4 cards back, but once you start combining this with cards like Stonehide-Spell or the ever popular and powerful Powerstone (hence the name ) things can get easily out of hand. Combine with Earth Ritual (also from the Basic Set) and you got yourself a decent stalling / card recovery deck. Only good for the opponent that there are cards like Lightning Strike, which removes a Creature from the game, thus avoiding the Wurm's pesky Destroy-Effect (which only applies when the Wurm goes from the playing field to the Archive). Air: Elder of the Skies
The Elder of the Skies has quite a lot going on. With 3 ATK and 3 DEF it has pretty decent stats for a level III Creature, but what makes it really stand out and a huge threat for your opponent are its special abilities. The Elder cannot be blocked (which would be great alone as well) and can only be attacked by Air Creatures. So unless your opponent has any Air Creatures out there in his ATK-Zone, you can have the Elder sit in your ATK-Zone pretty safely, with no need to heed enemy attacks and have it deal constant damage. Combine the Elder with Hastestone (letting it attack on the same turn it entered play) and/or Powerstone (boosting it in ATK and DEF) and Mars Rage or even Blood Sacrifice, which can give it a huge boost in ATK. Another card to consider running in your deck alongside the Elder is Protective Sphere. The Sphere protects all your Creatures from enemy Spells or Abilitis, this rendering the Elder of the Skies nearly invincible as the opponent could neither attack it (except with Air Creatures) nor target it with Spells like Flaring Flames or Lightning Strike.
Fire: Fiery Devil
I must admit, out of the lot of power Creature I list here, Fiery Devil is arguably the worst one, with Fire being, in my humble opinion, the weakest of the four Elements in the Basic Set. But still it has some things speaking for it. First off, it's 4 ATK are decent and enough to kill any Creature in the Basic Set, the mighty Sea Serpent included. The there is its Play-Effect. You discard 2 cards from your deck and then have to deal 2 damage to target Creature. The drawback of discarding 2 may be used to your advantage in Boon-heavy decks. I had situations where I discarded 2 Flaring Flames to the Devil's drawback ability, thus pinging one of the opponent's small critters and dealing 2 x 3 damage from the Flames. Also, to mitigate the drawback, you can add recovery cards to your Fire deck, such as the previously discussed Venus Wurm and Earth Ritual. Dealing 2 damage to any Creature on the playing field is nothing to complain about also, taking down small defenders for example. Just make sure Fiery Devil is not the only Creature out on the playing field, lest he had to deal the damage to himself, as the card says: "He likes to torch things, even if he has to torch himself."
Water: Mercury Shatterer
With only 2 ATK and 3 DEF, Mercury Shatterer has quite low stats compared to the other previously discussed Level III Creatures. (Design note: The Shatterer started out as a 2/4 Creature, but that was changed in order to balance things, making it vulnerable to Spells like Flaring Flames, which deals 3 damage to a Creature or Player) What makes this Creature one of my all time favorites among Creatures in Elemental Clash (not only in the Basic Set) is its Play-Effect. Upon playing the Shatterer, you take target Element Stone and put it back in his owner's hand. Now I must say I love resource control in any game, be it Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon or Elemental Clash, so this is why I love the Shatterer. Not only does it set the opponent back by one turn, nullifying one of his Element Stone drops, but also it can mess up an opponent's resources big time if he or she is running a mutli-element deck. With the lowest Element Stone determining the color of the whole Pile, opponents playing multicolor will often have tow stone piles, one of each element. Now if you return the bottom stone of one pile to its owners hand via Shatterer, you may often leave your opponent "stone-screwed", with two stacks of the same color / element. Combine Mercury Shatterer with my all time favorite card Shattering Wave (discussed in a previous post) and you got yourself a nice core for a blue resource control deck.

Well, these were my picks for the Basic Set "Power Creatures". As always let me know your thoughts and do not hesitate to disagree!
Looking forward to your many comments.
Until next time, as always,
keep on clashing!
