Of more than passing interest

Gaming is a big enough part of my life that I'll take some snapshots of it and post it up here. Today we'll look at resurrecting Aliens vs. Predator the CCG.

There's been quite a bit of renewed interest in this CCG, so I decided to dig up the info I have for the unreleased Atmosphere expansion and proxy up some cards. I have some of the planned image files, but the most important piece was the actual spoiler list.

So, what do I tackle first? Well, what should they look like? I looked at the original cards, which I liked, but trying to fix them so that I could enter new info on them would have been a trial. I didn't feel like whipping up anything new. So that meant looking at the first expansion, with the Resurrection stuff. I didn't like the look of the new cards, but they're definitely friendly to plugging in info. Scanned them up. So, let the cropping begin. Here's a human character card:

After I finish up these I'll tackle images. I plan on using some of the original, intended images, but this was supposed to be the expansion that put the original Predator movie in. So I'll be image capturing those images. This is a great chance to watch these movies again to look for the best images. Here's a quickie "Dutch":

I found fonts that match the Resurrection expansion pretty well, but perhaps I'll do up a different set for Atmosphere. We'll see. As this is only for the card titles, I'm not too worried about it at this point.

A project like this is mostly a list of finite tasks that builds up to time consuming:

-enter text
-capture images
-enter images

We'll see how it goes. I think I might just have to cave and buy the Aliens vs. Predator movies just to get more images. Wasn't so impressed by them, but can't beat some of the images for this kind of thing.

(Fast forward a few hours to a few minutes between classes)

Here's Major Dutch, a Work In Progress:

Any suggestions for fonts? Right now it's basicaly Arial and Digital-7.

EDIT: Added the Dutch WIP

Back when CCG Workshop was still around (and AVP was a pretty popular game), I decided to do this very same thing. I would bet I still have the templates and image files laying around on an old hard drive somewhere. If you're interested, I'll look for 'em.

I actually didn't think that the first Alien vs. Predator movie was completely terrible. I went in expecting to be entirely disappointed, and so I was pleasantly surprised when it was somewhat entertaining (albeit completely ludicrous).

I would! That would save me time! Right now I'm doing a pixel-by-pixel clean up of the card templates and that'll take forever!

What disappointed me about the AvP movies was that they felt like toy commercials more than movies. Better maybe than too arty (like Alien 3 felt to me), but I've gone ahead and gotten them both in anticipation(^_^)

Awesome project. I understand your conundrum, as I also think the original card layout from Premiere looks a lot more visually appealing than Resurrection's new layout (especially the yellow-black warning striped Event cards). But, you're completely right that the original layout is a real pain to work with, plus the space for text is far too small (probably the reason they changed layouts - the average card text in Resurrection is a lot longer than Premiere).

Interested to see what you come up with!

Whew, slow, but looking good so far:

Here I've got barriers, alien characters and human characters

I realize that it may just be better for me to watch the movies and maybe capture an image or two, but to focus on the data entry side of things. Now that I'm creating the text alignment templates up for the cards it just makes sense to do up the text first so I know what images to look for!

Big thanks to all for checking out my little project!

An awesome project, which I might be able to make a little easier...

As this [geekurl= http://www.lackeyccg.com/forum/index.php?topic=214.0]forum forum[/geekurl] reveals, megaupload used to have all the cards plus fan-produced Atmosphere AND Cityscape expansions! Atmosphere was based on the actual plans for that expansion, while Cityscape was more of a fan project based on the concept. Maybe these were the work of CapAp?

Sadly, the link is now broken, but I did manage to download these sometime last year. I still have all the files, just not in compressed form. When I have a moment (it'll take a moment because I'm only barely cpu-literate), I'll see if I can zip them and post them to the files section.

You would still have some work to do: the card images weren't always the greatest and the image file sizes and resolutions varied, making printing a bit difficult.

As for the fonts, I like:
Card Title: Digital SF, sheared.
Speed and Power Numbers: Impact Condensed.

I'm really pleased to see renewed interest in this game!

I found the original .rar file, but it looks like the files section is probably a no go, since if I didn't create it I'm not supposed to submit it.

Maybe I could still email the .rar file to anyone who wants it?

Well, I'll still hold out for any and all the help I can get!

Regardless the cards I scanned (and am in the process of cleaning) are at 600bpi. Then I convert them over to 300bpi and clean and color correct. The final cards will be at 300bpi and should look glorious when printed. (^_^)v

There is a small but dedicated community of AVP CCG fans in the link below that might be useful to you all. A guy there is currently working on a plugin for Lackey that includes Terminator CCG and the guy who created the Atmosphere and Cityscape proxies used in the program (Axlotl)posts often. It has been slow at times over there, so it could use some new members to who love to talk about this great game.
