Games, games and more games!

There were just the 3 of us. We started with our new MathTrade acquisition – Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer – another deck-building game in the same vein as Dominion and Thunderstone. It was quite enjoyable, although there were concerns about its replayability. And it came with sleeves, which I hate!
After that Sami chose Troyes, in an attempt to try and learn how to play. I managed to win again, using mainly yellow and white dice and placing on lots of the action cards, just beating Colin. Sami found that he kept getting blocked from what he wanted to do, and it didn’t go well for him!
I next chose Vikings, one of my favourite three player games. Colin went for the cash strategy – not realising that the 3 cash for 1 VP card had already gone – oops! However, he was just generally doing well elsewhere too, so it wasn’t really a problem for him! The biggest problem for both of us was start tiles! Sami meanwhile went for huge numbers of red multipliers, and every end-game bonus possible – so the pair of them left me miles behind at final scoring!
Next came The Castles of Burgundy, one of our current favourites. I didn’t particularly like my board, as it had lots of pairs, and seemed hard to finish any particular colour from the way the board was laid out. Sami went heavily for scoring yellow tiles, and at end-game scoring went flying into the lead.
After that was the bizarre game of the evening – Cluedo Chocolate Edition – a Christmas present from my mother a few years back. We played by the proper Cluedo rules, not the shortened ones suggested on the box – and had to explain the game to Sami who, surprisingly, hadn’t played it much as a child. Colin and I both worked it out on the same turn, but Colin went before me. I perhaps should have guessed earlier, rather than spend the time confirming the room by walking to it!
Colin then asked for a “proper” game of Cosmic Eidex, rather than just the couple of hands we usually get. I amanged to forget my power even existed after the first round (it didn’t seem overly useful!), but managed to get lots of hands where I could lose tricks comfortably, so won quite comfortably in the end, while the other two took it in turns to get the maximum points bonus.
We finished with a quick game of Ziegen Kriegen – a trick taking filler that we hadn’t played in a while.
