Themes for Killing Hitler?

I love playing games with music in the background.

Why play any 'Star Wars' game without John Williams' amazing and ground-breaking score playing too? Similarly for 'Lord of the Rings' - I can't imagine not having the wonderful themes of Howard Shore on in the background.

With 'Doctor Who', we're hugely lucky to have the very talented Murray Gold over the last 6 years who has given a humble TV programme cinematic orchestrations which are emotional, catchy and fun. In fact, I was so enamoured of Murray's music for Doctor Who's 'A Christmas Carol' and the brilliant song for Abigail that I even introduced Music as a Trait for Characters in DWSSG as a result.

When I'm designing (or doing this Blog), I usually either have a bit of Murray playing in the background courtesey of YouTube(!), or I've found that amazing group 'Two Steps from Hell' that do the most incredible tracks that are just bursting with atmosphere. if you haven't heard of them, check them out, they're wonderful.

A few posts ago, I mentioned my admiration and support for Flying Frog Games. Each of the games they produce has its very own soundtrack - how cool is that? Playing 'A Touch of Evil' with a specially designed score adds a little something. Sure, I could find numerous movie scores (Van Helsing and Sleepy Hollow spring to mind) but I do appreciate the effort put in here. Similarly of course, back to John Williams' 'Indiana Jones' scores for their upcoming 'Fortune and Glory', but I'm really looking forward to seeing what Mary (the composer from FFG) has come up with.

And...so... to... 'Let's Kill Hitler'...

I honestly, like 'A Good Man Goes to War' when it first aired, don't know how to rate this. I've only watched it the once, and it moved so rapidly that I'm sure I have missed several nuances and bits that might clear up some of the plot points over the last year and a half.

I did like it, thought Alex Kingston was as stunning and sexy as ever, thought Matt Smith was stuck on 'wacky' for a lot of it, and generally enjoyed the ride.

Plot wise, a lot of answers came out, some new questions were posed and a lot of holes are still left gaping. I guessed about Mels and the diary and a few others things too.

I'm not sure about River's 'redemption' that seemed very quick and also the jump from 'AGMGTW' to this episode was jarring. Steven Moffat pulled this trick before and it is so convenient in washing over the mundanity of tying up plot strands from episode to episode. For example, at the end of AGMGTW, they 're all on Demon's Run.Melody has been stolen and River's identity has been revealed. So, between this and 'LKH' Rory and Amy get back to contemorary Leadworth presumably by River taking them? Hang about, but River IS Melody - so if you were Amy and Rory, wopuldn't you sit River down and find out EXACTLY what was going on??

I guess that's about it for River in terms of her story - but of course, she's coming back! I think we're in for more timey-wimey nonsense yet.

And we STILL haven't found out why the TARDIS exploded in 'Pandorica Opens' when River is aboard who opens the doors to find stone and the voice on the console says 'Silence Will Fall'?? And the Silence aren't a race, they're an Order!!

My head hurts sometimes - and I'm a loyal fan...

So, rating 'Let's Kill Hitler', I'll tell you......

...Next Time!

(I've learnt all my tricks from a Mr S Moffatt!!)

I enjoyed LKH while I was watching it, but I can't help but feel like the story was entirely contrived.

While I thought they did a good job of introducing Mels' character and then very quickly developing her character with a series of flashbacks... it certainly didn't seem like that was planned all along. It felt very much like the late season Battlestar Galactica, where the writers were obviously (and admittedly) flying by the seat of their pants (which was extra lame when you consider that in BSG, the Cylons allegedly had a plan).

If this was River's first meeting with The Doctor, then it would stand to reason we're done seeing her - but that's clearly not the case... for one thing, The Doctor doesn't really know very much about River at this point, and allegedly he knows all about her when she meets him. For another, it seemed pretty clear that their relationship gets far more advanced (I did notice they stuck an "if you live, I'll marry you" thing in there). I loved the idea of those 2 characters meeting in opposite chronological order, and now they've gone and pretty much gotten rid of that.

It was interesting that they made River a Time Lord, with regeneration, but it would have been better if they hadn't then had a silly "she used all her future regenerations to save The Doctor," which even for something that's completely imaginary to begin with just doesn't make any sense at all. There's suspension of disbelief, and then there's just dumb. Ok, in that universe there's such a thing as a time Lord, and a Time Lord regenerates when he dies - fine. They mess with that all the time (if you kill a Time Lord while they're regenerating then they die for real)... sure. I guess I'll buy that. Using the energy discharge or whatever that is to heal another character... ok you're stretching it, but I'll buy it. Using FUTURE energy that won't exist until you die, and would only exist to regenerate yourself, in order to completely cure someone who is poisoned? I think they could have done better than that.

Maybe the worst transgression though, is that they made a big deal about going to 1930's Berlin and meeting Hitler, only to shove him in a closet and forget about him while they did other things, that could have happened anywhere. Visiting Hitler could have been a great basis for an episode in which The Doctor would end up foiling some plot to kill Hitler, even though Hitler arguably deserved it, because murder is wrong - that's the kind of thing the Doctor would do. And I mean that would be the entire plot of the show, not that they would accidentally save Hitler from the Tesselator or Judgment time-cop robot thingy, only to then ignore him completely. I feel like they wasted an opportunity there, and a friend suggested that they way they did address Hitler was pretty much in bad taste.

So while I said I enjoyed watching the episode, upon further inspection I think it was actually pretty lousy.

The LKH did seem a bit of a MacGuffing. An entire wasted story. It would have been better to have a split it off from the River storyline and concentrated on that. As Seth said stick him in a cupboard and forget about him, end of MacGuffin.

The pace as pretty quick and I did keep nodding off to sleep (late night viewing), so it'll need a second viewing to get a feel for it. But it did seem more enjoyable than 'AGMGTW'.

This isn't Doctor Who anymore, this is Scooby Doo. I found this to be competing with "The Doctor's Wife" as the worst story of this season.

To be fair, there is a presedent for a Time Lord giving up his future lives to save others now. The Fifth Doctor almost did it in 1983 in "Mawdryn Undead".

Oh, I thought 'Doctor's Wife' was terrific - best of the season so far!

Well, I enjoyed the episode... why not, really? When has Doctor Who ever been an "easy" show? It has always pushed boundaries, and with shows like BSG and Lost being popular and innovative, what is the next step?

Truly the only other show in my mind to break any remotely close "boundaries" is Twin Peaks.

Sure - people are going to hate some episodes, but this modern series has always been about being "along" for the whole ride.

I didn't see anything that broke any real "rules" of the Who-niverse... some new ideas, but nothing broken. The only crime is, as usual, trying to put three hours of show in a single hour - and I don't know about you, but that has always been a reason to enjoy Who.
