Games, games and more games!

There were 7 of us, so we were two tables, for the first time in a while. We started with a 4 player game of Wizard while waiting for the others to arrive, which finished just in time for the other three to arrive pretty much all together. Upstairs we played Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer, a new MathTrade acquisition that I love, and we’d already played twice earlier in the day! The other three players took something downstairs – but I forget what!
Then we re-arranged groups, and downstairs we played Macao 3 player. Marion got a huge amount of cash generation going, but unfortunately wasn’t able to convert it all to VPs quite as efficiently as I was. Meanwhile Sami went mega-shipping, and I pretty much ignored the city, except for buying 3 of one type, and spent most of my efforts on buying cards – in particular 5 different types of scrolls for my end-game reward. Meanwhile upstairs were playing Strasbourg, which Martin wanted to try (although Sami had to leave our game to do the rules explanation for him, as none of the others felt confident doing so – and then Martin told us a rule we’d got wrong that he remembered from his own reading of the rules!).
Then it was time to re-arrange groups again, and I was keen to play The Princes of Florence, and eventually found 3 players to join me. The final scores showed that Colin and I had played it lot more than the other two, as there were two separate games going on, but both played respectable games given that it was only their second attempt. Colin’s “10 work strategy” rapidly decreased in number, until he only put on about 7 or 8 works in the end. It was very close between Colin and I, especially after Colin made me pay 4VPs on the last turn to get the forest I needed for my last two works (bizarrely I’d got into bidding competitions both the other two times I’d tried to bid for it – rounds 4 and 6, and round 5 had put in a speculative bid on something cheap and got left in it!). Colin then had the choice of buying a safe 3 VPs (otherwise known as a lake), or risk a Prestige card draw from the top of the deck. He went for the safe VPs, and it turned out to be a game-losing decision, as he would have got 7VPs for the most works and beaten me by 1VP had he made the other decision. Ah well, next time!
Upstairs were still playing Kingsburg, so we picked another game to end the night – my choice, so I went for The Downfall of Pompeii. Marion seemed magnetically attracted to the 4 cards, so was a bit limited in her man placement. It was very close after the volcano exploded, with Colin and I getting just one person more than Marion, and ending in an absolute tie, having the same number of people in the volcano too. We ended there, and Kingsburg finished shortly after to end the evening.
