We started with a quick 3 player, Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer – my current hot game (although in this particular game I had a disaster). Then Haley and Richard arrived, so we went for a 5 player. As Haley is new to the group, we asked her which game last week she’d enjoyed most, and she chose Carcassonne, so we pulled it out again. This time it was Colin and Sami in farmer wars, and Haley got tons of cloisters, while Richard tried to complete his mega-city but failed (he was only one tile off by the end, which was closer than the rest of us expected!). There was lots of lapping of different players too, as scores varied wildly!!

Then we went for Coloretto – a favourite little card game of mine – with the expansion in the second and third rounds. I won, by consistently getting reasonable scores every round, and ducking out very early every time – while Colin seemed to be going for as many cards as he could get – sometimes it worked for him, but more often it didn’t quite go to plan!! Then Matt rang to say he needed picking up from the station, so we were down to four while Sami went to get him – it was my choice of game, so I went for Ingenious, a favourite abstract of mine. It was clear early on who’d played before, as Colin and I were fighting for first place, while Haley and Richard were both struggling to get any points at all in their weaker colours – especially as Colin would insist on shutting off long chains just in front of Richard!! I just won, but it was very close!!

We had ten minutes or so to kill after that, so played two hands of Halli Galli (Haley wasn’t brave enough to grab though) - and surprisingly Colin didn’t manage to win the second game!!!! Then we played On the Dot, which Haley did pick up pretty well, and managed to finish a number of cards second – sadly there are only points for winning, but I think next time she’ll be getting some points – that was the best performance by a new player I’ve seen. Richard gave me a good game this time, getting to the stage where we were both on 9 points, and whoever got the next card won.

For the next game we were 6, and as Ave Caesar was a hit with Haley last week, as well as being a game Matt likes a lot, so we pulled that out rather than split into two tables of 3. It was the usual fun, with Richard being blocked out of the pits, and me Crashing and Burning in the first race, and the final race being voided.

Haley left after that, but we were all in a silly mood by then, so as Richard had mentioned Mao earlier, we thought it was a good opportunity for a nice long session of that. Matt’s Boing rule, while deceptively simple, proved very hard to spot, and was even more confusing when its opposite was added in; Sami’s Echo rule confused everyone at first, and Richard for the rest of the game; while meanwhile I totally confused Sami with my rule of all honour cards being skips – I don’t know why! By the end it was almost impossible to go out, as there were so many rules added about going out that you were bound to mess up one of them, if you managed to get the card rules right themselves, and Richard and I were really strugging to get our hands below about four or five cards!

It can often be a good idea to start adding some rules that make it easier to go out sooner rather than harder once you already have several rules in play. E.g., maybe you could play out of turn in a certain circumstance or lessen the restrictions on playing X range of cards when Y conditions are met. These should usually be on the easier side of complexity so they aren't too terribly hard to figure out, especially if a round's winner is the one adding the new rule.

We did have a rule that made it easier to go out - but ended up with such a flood of new rules, that two people in a row made rules to make it harder for anyone else to go out, before it got too out of control!!
