Details on the Puerto Rico 10th Anniversary Edition

Stefan Brück at alea has released an overview of Puerto Rico: Die Jubiläumsausgabe, the tenth anniversary edition of Andreas Seyfarth's Puerto Rico, which will first be available at Spiel 2011 to celebrate the game's impressive debut at Spiel 2001. The game hadn't been published at that time, but a production-ready copy was available for play and was raved about by all.

With more than 250,000 sales worldwide and a near-permanent position at the top of the BoardGameGeek rankings, Puerto Rico is one of the most respected games of modern times. This limited edition, packaged in a gold-embossed box, includes the base game as well as the new buildings that first appeared in 2002 in Spielbox magazine (and were later reprinted in Schatzkiste / Treasure Chest) and the Nobles expansion from Schatzkiste.

The cardboard doubloons are now sixty metal coins, while the fifty octagonal resources have been replaced with specially designed and colored wooden crates. The building tiles are now illustrated, and the cardboard for those tiles and other components are nearly 3 mm thick to give the bits more heft. (For those who haven't yet memorized all the buildings or who want the look of the original, the building tiles have the original version on the back.) The individual player boards, the VP tokens, the ships and other components have also been redesigned.

Puerto Rico: Die Jubiläumsausgabe retails for €60, debuts at Spiel 2011 (with no preorders being taken or needed), and will be available through the trade afterwards. German rules (PDF) are available on the Ravensburger website, Ravensburger being the parent company of alea.

Update, Sept. 20, 2011: I pinged a few questions at Stefan Brück, and he sent the following additional notes:

• Rio Grande Games will release an English-language edition of Puerto Rico: Die Jubiläumsausgabe. I'm waiting to hear from Jay Tummelson to confirm a release date and price.

• This will be the only item available from alea at Spiel 2011, and it will be sold at the large Heidelberger booth (9-108).

• The Dominion: Seaside coins were used for this promotional shot only because the real coins are still being produced. Says Brück, "They will be entirely different from the Dominion coins."

Update, Sept. 21, 2011: To continue the updates, Jay Tummelson sent me the following when I asked about the availability of and price for Puerto Rico: Die Jubiläumsausgabe in English: "We expect to release the game in October. The price is not yet firm." Everybody's waiting to see what happens in Greece, I think, before nailing down prices...

As somebody who doesn't have this game in his collection, I'll have to see about snagging this anniversary edition if it comes to the states. I've only played the game once, but I really liked it!

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I don't think Puerto Rico has aged well at all. It was great in the early to mid-2000's, but other games have done the same thing much, much better since then. I sold my copy a while ago without looking back.

I know that there are games like San Juan and RFTG that are like Puerto Rico except quicker, but I think because of the random hand drawing, the games are a little less balanced and strong in the long run. I could be wrong about that, though.

Do you guys think that there is a game that has all the strengths of Puerto Rico, but is better, without losing anything even in the long term?

Our group has returned to Puerto Rico over the last few months, and it's been getting a lot of play.

From the inclusion of red bits, it appears that this edition has the expansion(s) included.

I must have this! English edition, please!

Strange why a English version would be created.

Did the German version sell more than the English version hence the reason?

Not at all. PR is one of my favorite games of all time, but more to the point, I can't think of anything else that comes close to duplicating its experience.

I'm also perfectly happy with the original version, but obviously a lot of folks like the looks of the new deluxe one. I hope Alea sells a ton of them (so that they can keep giving us great new games in the future).

I am very happy with my original version. But, I'm an Alea collector so I am working on tracking down a copy at the fair.

Still, I would totally play this copy. I don't need an English version of this.

I would expect the MSRP for an English version to be exactly the equivalent of 60 euros. Why would you expect anything else? At today's exchange rate, that equates to around $82 US. If online retailers discount it around 30%, then you can expect to pay around $58 plus shipping and handling. Considering the upgraded components and inclusion of expansions, it seems like a fair deal.

maybe the mix with doyle's and this "childish" redesign would have been better, it doesn't look bad and carries all the expansions BUT it could have been much much much much better.

EPIC FAIL.

Ahh, I remember the days when 60 euros = $60 soblue

I would think that versions in different countries would be priced at what they think the market can bear in that country... if they think significantly more people would buy it at $60, why would they sell it at $80 and sell many fewer copies? Just because exchange rates get crappy in one direction or another, doesn't mean people's incomes change accordingly in those countries... I didn't get a raise when the Euro skyrocketed relative to the Dollar!
(Then again I'm not an economist and concepts like the inevitability of inflation have always puzzled me, so I'm kind of talking out of my "hat" )

No 5 doubloons in this edition, just 60 of 1 doubloon

Old edition: 46 (1 doubloon), 8 (5 doubloon)
Anniversary Limited edition: 60 (1 doubloon)

It's funny, because the old edition comes with more money 46+(8x5=40)= 86 doubloons

surprise

Looks great!

Just one question for the BGG database admins:

if this edition of PR comes with an expansion included why doesn't it have a separate database entry like War of the Ring Collectors ed or the CATAN 3D Collector's Edition?

Don't misunderstand me, I don't think any of them should be separate (expansion included or not), I'm just wondering why this one is different. At the moment it's listed as a version in the Puerto Rico entry.

It's easier to claim to know a lot of games better than a game you don't like than it is to actually name them. I rarely see games mentioned in dismissive posts like this.

Don't worry about what they think, if you like a game, play it.

Interesting, I would have thought it was a lot more.

This shows how small our boardgaming hobby really is. It took one of the highest ranking games 10 years to sell a quarter million copies.

OK, Pillars of the Earth, or Le Havre, which in my opinion should be #1 on the geek. (Yes, I rate Memoir 44 and Twilight Struggle higher, but those are 2-player only and Le Havre should appeal to a wider audience). Really, any game that I rate higher than Puerto Rico. I don't fault anyone for liking it. It's still a good game. I just think there are better games out there now that I would rather play.

Good point – I forgot about the expansions being included when I created the version listing, but the entire PR expansion is not included (no forests), so I did end up creating a separate listing for Puerto Rico: Die Jubiläumsausgabe since it's an amalgam of different releases that doesn't precisely match any combination of them.

Keep in mind that Carcassonne has sold over 6 million copies. I also suspect that Puerto Rico's sales are in fact much higher (although nowhere close to 6 mil).

If you squint for a while at the game board, you can make out the "Manufaktur" building, which is the name of Factory in the German edition, at 8 doubloons! Correcting this design "mistake" makes it even more tempting to buy

I've updated this news item with additional information, reprinted here for those checking only the latest comments:

Update, Sept. 20, 2011: I pinged a few questions at Stefan Brück, and he sent the following clarifications:

• Rio Grande Games will release an English-language edition of Puerto Rico: Die Jubiläumsausgabe. I'm waiting to hear from Jay Tummelson to confirm a release date and price.

• This will be the only item available from alea at Spiel 2011, and it will be sold at the large Heidelberger booth (9-108).

• The Dominion: Seaside coins were used for this promotional shot only because the real coins are still being produced. Says Brück, "They will be entirely different from the Dominion coins."

Any info about this?

* The new edition has no 5 doubloons coins.

* The new edition comes with less money (60 vs. 86)

This looks great! I've always thought the production values of the original were lacking and I've put off purchasing it because of that. (silly, I know - but we all have our quirks..)

I have a group that I'd love to introduce this game to, and now I'll have a game that looks as good as it plays. Bring it on RGG!

No, you're not correct. As noted in the description, the new buildings and Nobles are included.

Not sure what info you need. Yes, the game has no 5 coins and it contains 60 coins total.

I did read the new rulebook, but one thing that caught my attention is that the main board containing the buildings looks a LOT darker than in this promo shot... and incidently, a lot nicer this way Maybe a matter of taste, but I really hope the final print will look exactly like the setup illustration in the rulebook... fingers crossed!

Interesting, I would have thought it was a lot more.

This shows how small our boardgaming hobby really is. It took one of the highest ranking games 10 years to sell a quarter million copies.

Keep in mind that Carcassonne has sold over 6 million copies. I also suspect that Puerto Rico's sales are in fact much higher (although nowhere close to 6 mil).

W. Eric must be part of a global conspiracy (funded by George Soros no doubt) to keep the true Puerto Rico sales numbers a secret.

Yes, sales denier is only one of my many functions. I even altered the alea news page to make it read "Heute, genau 10 Jahre und über 250.000 weltweit verkaufte Exemplare später..." (Today, exactly ten years and more then 250,000 copies sold worldwide later...) to keep the real number of copies sold a secret. That dirty Soros money brings a luster to my cheeks when rubbed directly on the skin.

I am also perfectly happy with the original box.
I may end up buying the new edition (if still available later on), but I will definitely keep the original small discs (colonists/noblemen) and don't consider the large crates an improvement over the octagonal cylinders either.

No idea. But alea has said that they continue to produce the original edition, so this edition is a one-off. Maybe they will reprint it as long as the demand is there during 2012.

Holy shit. A super special 10th edition made of a little bit of everything around here..... enough said: epic fail.

Hey Buzz Killington, we get it. You're not interested. As far as you adding anything worthy here: Epic Fail.

Excuse me all for my rudeness.

Cheers!

I do not see the point of this at all. I have the original game and there is nothing wrong with it. The original components are very good.

I would consider this for the expansion pieces, not necessarily for the components. Aren't the expansions hard to come by?

As a rabid uncompromising wargamer, the production values on this game could actually tempt me towards the dark side; although I would have to make a houserule that, in the event of a tie, the "colonists" rebel and slaughter everyone else.

Am I understanding correctly that it can only be purchased at Essen? I hope I'm wrong here because I don't go to Essen much. Well...never actually.

No, I quote Jay Tummelson at Rio Grande Games above saying, "We expect to release the game in October." Also from the news item: "Puerto Rico: Die Jubiläumsausgabe retails for €60, debuts at Spiel 2011 (with no preorders being taken or needed), and will be available through the trade afterwards."

I'm not sure if I like this very much. For years we've been playing Puerto Rico, and for years we've been anticipating this Anniversary Edition. This is what we would have liked to see:

1. The workers to be actual tiny people markers, both male and female, dressed in the typical 'jibaro' dresses Puerto Rican's used under the Spanish dominion.
2. Better looking metal doubloons. Those on the photo... me no like.
3. Wooden Ships.
4. Victory Point Tokens replaced by Leather-like imprinted shields.
5. Goods to be actual little Wooden Barrel Replicas, not Crates... Blah!
6. We know it would be very difficult but a 3D Wooden Board with 3D buildings would have been awesome.
7. Rule clarifications, especially on the new Nobles Expansion, all in a high quality antique book.

I know Rio Grande have made High Quality $100.00 Anniversary Editions before. I would not expect anything less for Puerto Rico.

Well, one bit of good news. It was stated above that they used the Dominion coins for the photo because the actual coins weren't ready yet. So those aren't what will actually appear in the game.

I agree. I would also enjoy it if RGG included Andreas inside of the box so that when you get the game and you don't know how to play it, he can teach you the rules himself.

The Seyfarths will need to print a few copies. Estimated release date: July 2012

Too bad they don't produce a version which replaces the old game with updated the artwork and components. Puerto Rico could use it and deserves it! Or will they?

I'm confused, this whole thread is about a new version which replaces the old game with updated artwork and components.......

How limited will the print run be? meeple

Publisher Stefan Brück said in an interview that there will be no limited print run like "999 items" for this, so nobody will have to fear that he won't get a copy. This will be available through stores for some months. They just won't reprint it like other board games that they are selling.
