Links: Game Giveaways from Z-Man and Steve Jackson, Ludonaute Finds a Distributor & More

• The nominees for the 2011 Juego del Año have been announced, and they are:

-----7 Wonders, by Antoine Bauza (Repos Production)
-----Felix: The Cat in the Sack, by Friedemann Friese (Edge)
-----Finca, by Ralf zur Linde and Wolfgang Sentker (Devir)
-----Forbidden Island, by Matt Leacock (Devir)

Can Matt Leacock's Forbidden Island avoid yet another Susan Lucci moment and top Bauza's 7 Wonders, which has seemingly won every award in existence for which it could possibly win? We'll find out during the Festival Internacional de Juegos in Córdoba, on October 8, 2011.

• Under new owner Filosofia Editions, Z-Man Games now has a Facebook page. If you visit the page by September 30, 2011, like it and submit a list of your three favorite Z-Man titles, you'll be entered into a contest for three games of your choice from the Z-Man catalog.

• Steve Jackson Games has a game giveaway of its own – but you have to work for it, specifically you must suggest a game name "for a quick two-player abstract game that uses walls and towers to claim space" without duplicating any existing name.

• French publisher Ludonaute has entered into a distribution agreement with Asmodee that will bring its Spiel 2011 release Shitenno to France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK and the U.S. with the game perhaps being available by the end of October 2011. Asmodee will also distribute Ludonaute's Yggdrasil (currently being reprinted), except in the U.S. where Z-Man Games has a license for the game.

• Online gaming site Yucata.de has added Peer Sylvester's King of Siam in a beta version.

people LOVE to hate the facebooks. shake frankly, not having a facebook account these days is like not having a mobile phone. you can choose not to, but you will miss out on many possible social interactions as a result. most social functions i go to are organized via facebook these days etc. if you are privacy paranoid, its easy to make an account and lock down the filters and not use it for much of import...whats the big deal? welcome to the 21st century.

their FB page is SPAMMED since this post went up with top3 game posts lol.

I dunno - the point of th contest is to make people aware of and to get them to follow the FB page. Seems like any alternative doesn't really accomplish that at all.

Frankly, if a company wants to offer free stuff, it seems a little weird to me to complain about the hoops they ask you to jump through in order to get it. Does that not seem weird to anybody else?

Well, I don't have a mobile phone, never had one and am pretty happy with my decision. I've never cared for Facebook, either, but Z-man made me create an account just now. Maybe I'm luckier in their contest than in the countless ones that I took part in here on BGG.

So far I've resisted creating a Facebook account. Personally I find BGG covers me great as a Facebook replacement since I have Geekmail, Profile, & blogging all built in.

Not sure if Facebook is a superior advertizing location over BGG. Though, you might net some casual gamers that way. Considering my luck on BGG contests, I expect the far greater number of Facebook users to make winning so much less that I don't really feel an urge to start an account!

I don't have a Facebook account and I don't care. The competitions are clearly designed to drive up the profile of a given Facebook page as a marketing method, and while I might support a given company or product, I am not in a position to help any of them in this particular kind of endeavour, so I consequently don't expect to be eligible for a prize intended to motivate said activity.

I basically agree with your point; but the pedant in me must point out that if a company is making me jump through hoops to obtain something, they are not giving it away for FREE.

Meanwhile, on the other point in the thread: I have a Facebook account (which is rarely used), but no mobile phone, and life seems to go along just fine.

As someone who has just come back from a fantastic morning of cooking with some of Australia's Masterchefs (a prize I won off Facebook), I'm more than happy to see all these people who are against it. meeple

If you really wanted to enter the competition, you could make an account and de-activate it after the competition is over. Or, you could just ignore the competition...which is what I have been successfully doing to every SMS-related competition ever since the invention of that horrid competition format. Bring back instant win prize packaging!

I'll revise...

... and the pedant in me must point out that arguing it's not really free (it's in exchange for jumping through hoops) completely misses the point.

(I meant "free" with respect to money, obviously)

I'm guessing that you're lumping 7 Wonders into the "fluffy game" category, and I'll say, no, I'm not tired of it winning. I've had a blast playing 7 Wonders and it more interesting and compelling than most other games I've encounterd in the past twelve months. (Innovation is still my go-to game, but that preceded 7 Wonders.)

And more on the fluffy-love front: I played King of Tokyo for the first time recently and went on to play it seven times total in a few hours. Poor Cyberbunny never became king of the hill, but I had a great time playing and love the ups and downs (mostly downs, alas) in the game.

all the people happy without cellphones on this thread seem to live in nonUS nonEuropean places. I have no land line, and its cheaper and more convenient this way. Those without them are definitely less available, for better or worse depending on your viewpoint. FaceBook use in metropolitan areas of the US is VERY high now, atleast with 20 and 30 somethings, and fringe culture groups have adopted it too, and so is pretty much essential if you have an active social life and a large group of friends (imho), though I have no idea how its used elsewhere. I agree you can live a life without them if you want, but it seems quaint 20th century thinking to me.

Hoping to hear Zman announce the Essen games they are bringing over soon. I am REALLY interested in Tournay. I like the style and gameplay of TRoyes alot, but repeat plays have me somewhat irritated by the dice buying mechanic. Tournay looks to focus on the 3 types of citizens interacting with the card tableau engines, which is my favorite part of Troyes, with the same art and designer. I love tableau card combo games (esp RftG). so yeah, when can i buy it here and will it be via Zman as I assume?

Same here. When I had to tighten my financial budget belt, I discovered my landline was more expensive than my cell phone. So the landline has become a "luxury" and went out the window!

At first I thought you meant a list of games that Z-Man will have available at Spiel 2011 (a list that is forthcoming from Z-Man/Filosofia), but then I realized you're in the U.S. and probably want to know which games Z-Man will make available in the U.S. later. In that case, most such deals are hammered out in principle during Spiel, then finalized afterward, so don't expect too many announcements until October.

Winning an award in Spain based on a game set on an island off the coast of Spain is unlikely to spur U.S. publisher Rio Grande to reprint the game.

The game isn't out yet. 30k of donations (3x what they set as the publishing goal) to get the game funded based on PNP/prototype seem to me IS a pretty good "reception". Don't agree - show me your 30k idea.

Just MHO...

people LOVE to hate the facebooks. shake frankly, not having a facebook account these days is like not having a mobile phone. you can choose not to, but you will miss out on many possible social interactions as a result. most social functions i go to are organized via facebook these days etc. if you are privacy paranoid, its easy to make an account and lock down the filters and not use it for much of import...whats the big deal? welcome to the 21st century.

shake gulp

so is pretty much essential if you have an active social life and a large group of friends (imho), though I have no idea how its used elsewhere. I agree you can live a life without them if you want, but it seems quaint 20th century thinking to me.

Oh ... oh ... just ... BOLLOCKS!!

You know, you must be right mate, because no one had active social lives and large groups of friends before Facebook convinced everyone it was essential to find out every time one of them had just taken a dump. Silly old me and my quaint 20th century thinking.

Interesting that there aren't any complaints about the BGG contests being limited to people that want to use this site. Wouldn't those be considered unfair as well?

And the contests where you have to read the rules - that's not fair to people who don't feel like reading. They should just show up at a random person's house, hand them a game and walk away. Wait - that wouldn't be fair to people without houses. And not fair to things that aren't people.

With billions of people on the planet I'm glad there are a few hoops to jump through to narrow the field (even though it has yet to help me win).
