You will see such things as painted models, terrain I am making for use in Dust, and general commentary and musings on all things related to the ever growing world of Dust! Also, I will be writing about, and showing pictures of, any and all commissions I am doing, so stay tuned! Enjoy! Euen

On the woes of being a miniature painter...and other existential musings

So, I promised pictures of some finished Dust Tactics miniatures+Space Hulk miniatures would be here, on my blog, last weekend.

Yeah, that didn't happen, because, as usual, life got in the way. I ended up spending the weekend playing a big solo Dust Tactics game against myself on my old Warhammer 40k urban ruins board, and then my family ended up doing a bunch of stuff as well. Sooo, not much got done.
And it looks like you guys won't be seeing any finished Dust Tactics walkers by the end of this week, either.
Why, you ask? Simple. The AK interactive weathering enamels I got (endorsed by Mig Jiminez of Mig productions) ended up being a massive failure, and are going to the trash. "But their endorsed by one of the most famous modelers of them all!", you say "How can they be crap!?".
Simple (I'm using this word a lot), they failed me 3 strikes system:

Strike 1! They are toxic and smell bad, plus did I mention they are runny and hard to control? I have to wear latex gloves and go outside to be able to use the stuff.

Strike 2! They don't work like they should. I followed the instructions, and instead of forming natural streaks like they are supposed to do when you apply the "white spirit" (code-name for "paint thinner"). Instead, the enamels sorta spread out everywhere and stained the white camouflage markings on my walkers a orange brown...meaning I have to go back in and re-apply white over all the areas that I attempted to weather. Which takes forever.

Strike 3!They take to long to use. I mean, I just don't have the time to do all of the above! Even though acrylic weathering looks a bit bold, I am going to stick to that from now on, because with acrylics, I have no toxins to worry about, they are fast, efficient, odor free, and easy to use and (most importantly) easy to remove.

Sooo, what with one thing and another, I will not have pictures of finished Dust Tactics walkers up for a good while yet. Ugh.

I will have some pictures of Space Hulk stuff soon, though. I am hoping to have 4 more marines, and 6 more genestealers, done by the end of the week, for a total of 8 finished marines and 18 finished genestealers.

Cheers!

I have heard really good things about Forge World's weathering powders, but I haven't tried them myself. Being Forge World, they're probably expensive for what they are, though, but it's something else to try?

Personally, I've never been fond of weathering. I prefer the "new from the factory" look

the problems i see with alot of those pro items like the mig powders is that alot of people LOVE them , but MOST of those people are the ones that are SERIOUS painters , so they use them enough to get familair with them , and so its eay to just throw it all together for them .

something i didnt mention in this weeks blog posts is that the blackening around the barels and exaqsts and the darker brown in the muding is actually the crushed artist pastels . it took a little work to get them TO work and figure them out , but after using them on a few walkers , i would rather use the crushed pastels for the particular effect than hassle with the airbrush .

you cant tell in the licks , but all the chipped paint and wear marks UNDER the blackening shows through . it works great .

i crushed the pastels into poder , used a stiff soft brisle brush and worked them into the brush . to get the blackening i worked it in in small strrke with light pressure into the areas i wanted it on . for the brown i just lightly applied it to the mud and didnt work it in .

it was the last step before sealing , and it is a bit messy so i did it on a scap paper so it wouldnt get all over my work area .
