New Game Round-up: Another Campaign Book for Memoir '44 & Details on Wallenstein 2011 and Rio Grande's Release Schedule

• Days of Wonder has announced Memoir '44: Campaign Book Volume 2, a 128-page book similar to the first volume released in 2009. Campaign Book Volume 2 includes 46 new scenarios grouped into eleven different campaigns, including two set in the Pacific Theater and a Breakthrough campaign covering the Allied offensive in Normandy. Campaign Book Volume 2 is scheduled to be released in early December 2011 in the U.S. and Europe with a retail price of $30/€30.

• Queen Games has passed along details about the new edition of Wallenstein debuting at Spiel 2011. The based game is largely the same, although it's been tweaked through the addition of bonus tiles that are acquired while determining player order and a reduction in the number of event cards in the game. This version also includes two expansions that can be added to the game separately or together that allow players to earn additional bonuses – money, armies, etc. – during play based on either their presence in four or more regions or the number of courtiers they present to the emperor.

• Jay Tummelson at Rio Grande Games has posted one of his infrequent newsletters that update what you can expect to see from the U.S. publisher. The news falls into three buckets:

—Titles due out in October or November
-----Friday, Power Grid: First Sparks, Power Grid: The Robots, Salty Dog, South Pole, Stone Age: Style is the Goal, and Puerto Rico Anniversary Edition.

—Titles due out in early 2012 (or possibly December 2011)
-----Arctic Scavengers, Cavemen, Carcassonne: The Falcon, Those Pesky Garden Gnomes, Rattlebones, Credit Mobilier, Mogul, Monster Factory, and several others.

—Digital versions of existing games
-----Says Tummelson, "We have ... licensed Dominion's digital rights, and we expect it will be available in various forms by the end of the year. Race for the Galaxy will also appear in digital form in early 2012."

• Mayfair Games has verified the forthcoming release of The Rivals for Catan: Age of Darkness, a 90-card expansion for The Rivals for Catan that breaks down into three 30-card theme sets. Age of Darkness retails for $15 and has a November 17, 2011 release date in the U.S.

Claustrophobia: De Profundis might be at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

According to the claustrophobia website, it's at the bottom of the ocean:

http://www.claustrophobia-theboardgame.com/en/?p=341

That's a CONFIRMED STATEMENT that the container went overboard.

Hmmm, just be sure to check for warped cardboard when those finally do arrive! Or maybe it's possible to just wring the sea water out and keep everything nice and flat. Perhaps the game will come with it's own pasta roller to help you with that task!

Maybe if we gave it a new name, it'd appear cooler? How about:

"Stone Age: Pimp My Cave"
"Stone Age: Celebrity Huts"
"Stone Age: 37 Pieces of Flair for Your Bearskin"
"Stone Age 2: Still Stoned"

Etc.

must admit that cavemen caring about style kind of breaks the veil of the theme a good bit. Really? style? curious to see the rules and how it plays out...but yuck! even establishing trade with other cavemen tribes or the historically impossible dinosaur hunting would have been preferable themes...survival is what i thinbk of when i think cavemen and prehistory, not fashionistas...

confused that RGG is not doing Alea games anymore and that there is no real sign of Die Burgen Von Burgand getting a wide US release. and no news on the carcassone expansions is odd at this point. the RGG updates do seem too few and far between, and content light when they arrive.

Man, there are parts of those books that really don't need to be in a board game.

Huh. I read that differently, but looking at it again, you might be right. Links to rules, scenarios, etc.

This is not a good way to market a game, methinks. Don't confuse people.

Agree, and extend all of the above to Dominion too! Especially on the AI front where I am sure that I had seen a thread which suggested that Dominion wouldn't have AI - big error if you ask me.

Really? Why a new entry for Wallenstein if it's just minor tweaks? Things are getting ridiculous around here... each day the games spread more and more, there'll be a point where the ranking will be useless...

It sounds better in German.

That's my point...sometimes a direct translation is not as catchy. It could have been something like "Pelts and Pearls" or even something simple like "The Jewels" or "Talismans" or "Treasures" or "The Amulet of Thog". "Style" just seems like a modern concept.

If the only differences were the bonus cards and reduced number of event cards, I would have listed the 2011 Wallenstein as a new version of the old game. But since it includes two new expansions, the game seems sufficiently different to merit its own listing.

Perhaps other BGG admins will suggest otherwise and we'll merge the entries at some point. It's tricky deciding how different two games can be while still being the same game; we don't have an exact dividing line, and I don't know whether it's possible to define one that would cover all situations.

I agree!

It would be better as "Stone Age: Dawn of Trade" or some other similar name to make it sound like the birth of prosperity -- where the civilization is just starting to move beyond basic survival and into an era of craftsmanship.

Alternatively maybe the expansions could be listed just as entries by themselves? (like Tenno's Court for Shogun; in fact, Emperor's Court could almost be listed as a version of Tenno's court).
Especially if the expansions end up being available by themselves someday (as an owner of the original German Wallenstein, here's hoping )

If they were sold separately, yes, that would work, as is the case with Tenno's Court.

As I've posted elsewhere, sometimes we get in a tough spot in the BGG database as we want each game to have its own page so that interested parties can talk about everything associated with the game, but in addition to focusing on designs, we also pay attention to products, that is, how a game is sold, as BGG users want to use the marketplace, track their collections, comment on the various versions of a game, and so on. The BGG admins have talked about various options, and we'll see what's possible in the years ahead.

The new edition of Goa is actually coming from Filosofia, not Rio Grande Games. In a news post in early 2011, Filosofia had given a November 2011 release date for this game. I'm still waiting on a complete list of what Filosofia will have at Spiel 2011, so I'll ask about Goa, too.

Stone Age 4: Plastic surgery disasters...see how long your new face lasts before you look like a melted candle.

Stone Age 5: electric boogaloo...a USB port is included so you can plug into your PS3 and play this along side Dance Dance revolution.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Seriously. This must be sad news for Croc and definitely sad for people who love Claustrophobia (me).

Hopefully the shipment is all right and hopefully we still get our mits on it as soon as possible.

Maybe this is a wise marketing decision...instead of saying the boat is late or it is stuck on the dock, which seems to make some on BGG uber mad...just say the package was kidnapped by aliens, destroyed by Krakens, or was smoked by giant mechanical transforming robots.

I am super excited to see Mogul on RGG's release schedule!

I have only had the opportunity to play it once, and was left wanting more. It is a great little auction game, simple but deep. The only problem is that it is a tough game to acquire.

I am curious to see if they make any changes. I wouldn't mind a few graphic and component upgrades, but would hope they stay pretty close to the original version.

I am adding it to my buy list.

What did you think the Ochre commodity in AH Civ was for? Making paint!

Why do you think beads have been used as currency for tens of thousands of years?

No, it's perfectly thematic that the first luxury goods in a Neolithic civilization are decorations.

It is, but at this point, they should have both expansions Kyle was working on, not just the first.

I know that this is really old news, but is there any update on the licensed electronic version of Race for the Galaxy yet? Haven't heard anything since this post.

Thanks.
