Gaming at Work

Several of us BGGers are lucky enough to work in a place where we have fellow gamers. This blog will talk about games being played at work and how well they fit in a lunchtime environment.

Arg! I just typed this up and the submit failed. I hate it when I lose all my information. Well, here goes again.

Tichu Play Log

Tichu
Most of my game playing as a kid consisted of card games. Sure we played the classics, but card games were what I remember learning, playing, and loving the most. Canasta, Euchre, Pitch, and many others were favorites in our house. I remember when I was finally old enough to be able to play when my married siblings came over for Sunday dinner. Until I met my first gateway game cards were where it was at.

Since being active here on the geek I have seen a lot of talk and love given for Tichu. However, during that time I have been more active with board games than card games, so I never got around to picking it up. This last order I made I found space for a cheap game, so I decided to finally make the purchase.

Today's Game
Today I taught John, Jeff and Austin how to play. John has played a lot of card games and was able to pick things up very fast. Jeff was learning as well with a few hints here and there. Austin, not playing many card games in the past, slowly started getting a grasp on how things worked.

The first hand saw me calling for Tichu. I could never get the lead and John went out first. However, that finally gave me the lead and I never lost it again going out second. That put us in the hole with a 80 point disadvantage. The next hand John called a Grand Tichu and got it, along with the majority of the points putting us into an even bigger hole. Finally we got a good set of hands. Jeff made a Tichu call and we got every point pulling us within 100. Then a couple of hands later we were sitting with a 290 point lead.

The clock was not in our favor. We decided to play one more hand before going back to work. With a big deficit John called Grand Tichu. In the end I think Austin had the better hand, but he was able to help John get the lead and went out soon after John giving them the 1-2 punch along with the Grand Tichu. That was way too much for us to come back from and they ended up pulling off the 525-365 win.

Does this work for lunch?
I need to take a rain-check on this. I've only had 2 plays and neither of them finished. I think given more experience we could get a full 1000 point game in under the hour mark. However, both games I've played so far only went to 500 points. As far as fitting in your group, yes this is a great card game. It is already sitting high on my list of favorites. I need more plays, but this will definitely work well with my family.

Discussion Question: What should I wish for?
I have read some of the discussion threads surrounding this question. Wish for what you passed, or wish for an A if your LHO called Grand Tichu. I think I just need to play more to get a good grasp on this. Today John kept calling for a K which killed me and he would end up acing it for 10 points and the lead back. Maybe this was just dumb luck, but I am still trying to decide what a good wish is. Please comment on what you like to do.

One difficulty with this game is it's strict player limit. It plays 4. Not 3 and not 5, just 4. Also you can't play 2 or 6 player. No, you can't play solitaire... although you could use the deck to actually play solitaire.

I have the same experience with lunch time Tichu as you. It is more of a play number of hands and see who has the most points rather than play to 1000. But that seems fine to me.

As for the wish, I wish for what I passed almost always, though I will freely admit to not being a stellar Tichu player. Wishing for a high card that you did not pass is asking for trouble - I have seen aces pulled out of a partners hand before due to a rash wish. And even a less agressive wish can disrupt a partner's hand - so I look to cause less trouble for my partner and maybe wipe away a possible bomb or full house made from what I passed my LHO.

Play with the lunchtime scoring variant: Failed tichus are positive points to the other team.

If the lunch time game doesn't finish, i.e. nobody gets to 1000 points, continue in the next lunch time.

Good idea for a blog. I also play games at lunch. We used to have 4 players, then 3 now 2. I have a new co-op student coming in April...hopefully he will be up for lunch time games. In the past we've played RFtG, Dominion ans St. Petersburg. Now it's Ascension and I think tomorrow I'll bring in Innovation.

Keep it up.

Why is it so important to reach this arbitary total of 1000 points for it to count as a full game?

As many hands as you can fit in an hour seems a perfectly adequate length of game to me when you have only a certain amount of time with a game with an uncertain length.

Another issue with carrying over a game is that the next day you might have 4 different people ... or 5 people ... or 3 people. And so the suspended game is on hold a bit longer, until no one can quite remember where they were at.

Wish wise, you have to choose between damage and help. Blind wishes are more likely to really disrupt the opponent. But they're also far more likely to disrupt your partner. My rule of thumb is that you should only BW if you're confident your partner is not going to call tichu. (That includes the times when you're calling as you're playing of course.)
Wishing for the card you passed (especially if it's low) is a good way to help your partner.

I wished for a King while holding an Ace each time. Takes a King from my LHO, then gives my partner first crack at playing an Ace to keep the lead. Worst-case scenario, my partner breaks a pair or straight and my opponent lands the Ace first. Both times I called it today, though, I was holding the Dragon as insurance.

ETA: totally agree with loofish above about the time limit. No reason to worry about an arbitrary point limit.

Thanks for the discussion on the wish. As a follow up, when would you not want to lead the mahjong card? I understand you don't have to lead it, but I can't think of a reason you would want to hold onto it, because you may never get the lead back. Of course playing it as part of a straight seems really good, helping you get rid of a lot of low cards, but most of the time it means the round will start with singles.

Leading something other than the 1 can be useful, but only rarely. (I'm assuming you haven't called tichu, and no one else has called GT.) Leading a 2 single is about the same, without the wish. Having the 1 in the endgame can be very powerful if you're a real card counter, or even just lucky. (You have 1,4 left, your only opponent has 3, A. If you lead the one and wish for the 3, you can go out. If you had 2,4 left your opponent plays A, and then goes out on the 3.)
