Thirteen plays and I am already royally bored

I always get really excited about new games but after a while the excitement simply fades away. And I’ve always wondered how many times I can actually play a game before I actually get bored with it. I have found my answer, at least regarding one particular game: Ticket to Ride Europe.

I gave Ticket to Ride Europe to my mother as a mother’s day gift. It instantly became her favorite game, overtaking Trivial Pursuit’s previous place as the number one. She wants to play it every time we visit my parents. She wants to play it on Friday. She wants to play it on Saturday. Sometimes she wants to play it twice. Sometimes she wants to play it on Sunday too. We have played Ticket to Ride with my mom and with my parents thirteen times now.

It looks so innocent, so innocent...

Thirteen times doesn’t sound much. And I guess it’s not much for some games, but it’s too many times for Ticket to Ride Europe. The thirteenth time was painful. I felt that I had already built each and every route like thousand times. There was no surprises left in the pile of ticket cards. My boyfriend starts to guess my routes, probably to lessen his own boredom. My mom, on the other hand, is oblivious. She still plays the game happily. I think she’s probably even more happy now when she knows the routes better. She really can play the game and she would win easily if she took more risks in the end.

But yeah, we are bored with Ticket to Ride. Royally bored. I would prefer not to play it for a year, though I think it would take even longer to forget the routes. I am not bored with the game per se just with the routes. Though there’s an app for that.. I mean, there’s an expansion for that. Apparently Ticket to Ride Europe 1912 has some new ticket cards. I’m just not sure if couple new ticket cards are enough to get me interested again. And it’s definitely not a long term solution. I would eventually get too familiar with the new cards too.

I have also considered giving her the original Ticket to Ride, though I have to admit that I’m not exactly excited about that. As a Finn and as an European I find the American map a little too... American? I believe that my mom would also find uninteresting. There’s some new maps coming out, Indian and Asian, but I’m not sure about those either. Got to wait for the reviews first.

Now, I am aware that there are plenty of fan maps for Ticket to Ride. We have even played one with my boyfriend. It was a map of Finland and I think he printed it somehow wrong and the trains didn’t exactly fit the routes and it looked very unprofessional... Maybe because we colored it with coloured pencils instead of printing it in color. Anyway. I am not willing to try that again! Unless someone is able to point me to a map of Russia. My mom loves Russia.

Basically there’s only one option left, one real mission impossible: to find another game my mom likes and agrees to play. Preferably something even better than Ticket to Ride. The problem is that my mom doesn’t really like board games. When I was a kid she never ever played board games with me even though we had nice board games like A-maze-ing Labyrinth. For 24 years the only two games she agreed to play were Trivial Pursuit, and for some rare occasions Ubongo. I am still flabbergasted by the fact that she wants to play Ticket to Ride and actually enjoys it too.

My boyfriend has researched some popular gateway games, but frankly, I have hard time imagining my mom liking any of them. Too simple, too much text (I’ve got the feeling that she doesn’t really enjoy wearing her reading glasses plus she only understands Finnish), too complicated, stupid theme... And so on and so on. I feel like I am looking for a game that doesn’t even exist, and at the same time I’m not even sure what I am looking for.The basic idea of the game needs to be easy to understand. Like in Ticket to Ride: "Get ticket cards, build routes, win the game by completing most ticket cards". She would get lost with games like Le Havre: "get cattle, make meat..." The game itself doesn’t have to be overly simple though. It just need to be very easily explained. Basically I am looking for a game that is about as simple or complicated as Ticket to Ride, with the same play duration, with the same number of players (at least 4 players but 5 would be nice too), engaging theme and some luck involved... and without elements I can get extremely bored with. Any recommendations?

Hi Amoena - a nice blog! I'm sure you won't want to consider this initally but what about TtR Nordic Countries?!? New routes and some more things to think about and your mother will know the map! Another game we are enjoying is Paris Connection which is a route making company railway game with nice bits and a similar complexity to TtR. Anyway, happy gaming and there are so many good games you should never be bored...

Maybe she will love Alhambra.
It is easy game, and she will get to build city.
My mum also liked TTR, and on my surprise she loved Dominion when I showed her.

Actually this story starts with TtR Nordic Countries. I introduced it to my mother and she liked it, but the number or players became a problem as it is only for three players. I visit my parents with my boyfriend I have full set of parents... that makes four players, and sometimes my uncle or aunt are visiting my parents too and want to play, so that's five players.

Paris Connection looks pretty - I have to read some reviews first though

We have Dominion too, a Finnish version actually, and I have been thinking about introducing it to my mother. I just think that she might not be into card games + there's a lot of text. She would have to be reading all the time. My father struggles to read small print too, so yeah, I think I am looking for a game with no in-game text or minimal in-game text. Just to save my own nerves.

Alhambra has lot's of expansions and has no in-game text. Intriguing indeed. I used to be interested in Alhambra by myself before we get into more "serious" games. Maybe it's time to do some research again

Just a thought - you already own rattus (without pied piper) and finca - both are easy enough games to understand and play. Both have very easy turn sequences and little or no iconology or text involved. The play times are short and the concepts are fairly straightforward after a few minutes.

It seems you need to broaden her horizons a bit and make her "catch the bug" of gaming a bit more before you expect them to leap into other arenas of serious boardgaming that might interest you as much as them.

I know my parents religiously play scrabble and that's all they do, but I am slowing expanding their exposure to other games little by little. Believe it - TTR was a bigger step than you think for someone who has played a trivia game and nothing more. Perhaps you need to give her a bit more credit.

edit: wanted to add that you have biblios on your wishlist - this is a very easy to understand game with pretty addictive gameplay. I get many MANY plays out of my copy and again, playtime is short. You don't seem to own many drafting or bidding games but those are very good gateway mechanics as well.

One of the 1912 variants, Big Cities, makes the Europe map a lot more claustrophobic. Don't know if it would help your games any, but I tend to find it's a lot more interesting when key routes are more hotly contested.

I'd suggest the 1912 expansion to Europe - it adds heaps of new routes including several more long routes. The cards are also grouped, so you can play just "Big Cities" or just throw the lot in or whatever.

Not sure if it helps much, but given that you mom did not play games with you in the past, getting her to play and enjoy TTR seems like a big success anyhow - and maybe you should just enjoy that for what it is. Some people do prefer to play a game they know over and over.

The Settlers of Catan might be an option for another game to play with you Mom?

Stone Age is perhaps a fraction harder than TTR but still easy to learn - that might be worth a go as well. has an expansion coming out soon that brings it up to 5 players.

Mmm... been there. There's no easy answer, you can only try many different games until one "works" . The above suggestions are good, you might look too at:
Dixit
The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus
Pandemic

I would suggest

Pit Pit Jr: Shout it Out!
It's Alive It's Alive!

Both are great examples of games whose simplicity doesn't detract from the fun. They are both short, so best as an accompaniment to something else.

Stoneage as mentioned above is a great game which is fairly easy to grasp but has lots of depth and strategy and is runs for about 2hours.

Another excellent game that is easy but with decent strategy is Alhambra.

I think Tower of Babel would be good for your family. It's simple but strategic bidding, with area majority & set collection, and it's done in 45-60 minutes. It also comes with a variant which would add some variety to the game. Totally worth checking out.

If your mother likes TtR you might consider Getting a copy of Santa Fe Rails. Same designer, more strategy and I think a better game. looks like there are plenty available in good used condition for a reasonable sum.

You should pick the 10 kingdom cards carefully the first time you play this game with your mother. Just pick 10 without a lot of text on them. Once she gets the hang of it, play another game and introduce some new cards. This way you'll give her time to learn the game on a slow pace and once she's used to it the cards will become second nature for her.

Good luck!

I think an obvious choice would be Fresco. It has a very strong theme, relatively easy gameplay and 3 built in expansions.

Thebes is another good choice for a game with great theme tied to the mechanics, though strategically it's pretty light.

Am surprised no one has mentioned 7 Wonders. Yes, a card game, but is easy to understand, no text, quick to play, and accommodates up to 7 players. also, Airlines: Europe might work (by Alan Moon, same as TtR). Finally, you might consider the family version of Agricola.

My wife's mom, who only speaks Russian, loved Settlers of Catan when we played it with her. It was easy enough to translate the Development Cards for her, and I learned the Russian words for the various resources for trading purposes. She still calls the game "Barran" (sheep), though.

My mother-in-law is similar: loves to play the games with the family, but cannot cope with anything more complicated than TtR.

Successes have included Dixit, Qwirkle, the 10 Days series, Ubongo Extreme, Through the Desert and Metropolys.

And Bananagrams. I think there's an unwritten rule that one's mother / mother-in-law / grandmother loves scrabble-type games!

I'd suggest the fairly new Alan Moon design, Airlines Europe. A reworking of Union Pacific, it's a bit more complicated than TtR, but not overly so. Still some route building, but adds buying stocks in various airlines.

You are probably not going to find something to completely replace TtR. You should aim for a few games that your mother will play in addition to TtR. I've introduced several games to my brother, including TtR. TtR is his favorite. He will play other games but the game he really wants to play, and the only one he ever asks to play, is TtR including all the different maps.

First, get 1912 and other TtR maps. Hopefully it will decrease your boredum level a little.

Second, introduce your mother to a few other games. Don't try to stop playing TtR. Instead try to get your mother's gaming rotation to include 2 or 3 games in addition to TtR.

Third, don't introduce too many new games. One of the difference between hard core gamers and casual games is that most hard core gamers like to play a large variety of games, whereas casual gamers prefer a small variety of games.

I vote for Zooloretto as it's a simply explained game, has no text, and yet I've found that, with expansions, the more I play it, the more I enjoy it. I thought when I first played it that it was pretty TTR-level simple and would get slow after a few plays, but I've actually found it grew on me and I enjoy it more the more I play.

And I'm a Battlestar Galactica and Android player, not a TTR player. So you might find it enjoyable too, even if your mom latches onto it the same way she did TTR.

Designed by Alan Moon, the same guy who did TtR. European map, pretty colored planes, route building. Your Mom will love it. It takes the concept of TtR and ups the ante with stock ownership. Just a single baby-step above TtR.

You've hooked her with Ticket to Ride, now show her how much more fulfilling the experience can be with a game by the same designer. Get her going on a second boardgame and the third will be that much easier to introduce.

I feel your pain, Amoena. I know some people swear by Ticket to Ride; even serious gamers. But I find it dull as a box of rocks.

Airlines Europe is a pretty good suggestion and I think it's a better game, but for me the fun factor is heavily compromised by the fiddly scoring rounds.

There is this game:

Tracks to Telluride

In my opinion, it rates much higher then the BGG rating and also the review.

But you must like games with a significant part of randomness, so if you are a "euro-game perfect knowledge" type of player, then this game is not for you.
