Small World Tunnels: You Got Your Small World in My Small World Underground...

Since the moment Small World Underground was announced in April 2011, players have asked whether it could be combined with Small World, its predecessor from 2009. This question was answered in the SWU rulebook from Days of Wonder, with details on which regions could be considered equivalent when determining bonuses and special powers, how to add monsters and relics to the original game, and so on.

But that's not really what people wanted to know: They wanted to play both games together. After Spiel 2011, they'll be able to do so thanks to Small World Tunnels, a free mini-expansion that Days of Wonder will distribute at the game convention in Essen, Germany in late October. In Small World Tunnels, 2-6 players can use caverns as tunnel entrances to jump between the two game boards with races and special powers from both games being available. The rulebook included with the expansion details how to set up the two game boards to accommodate different player numbers.

Small World Tunnels will subsequently be available at game stores in Europe in late October 2011 and in the U.S. in mid-November.

Together at last...

It's almost an homage to Fische Fluppen Frikadellen. Fascinating and brilliant, and it will make me want the newer game now

Is the price known ? I assume it would be quite cheap.

I think it'll be free at Essen and then cost a small amount after the show (perhaps as a BGG offering). Alternately, we might see it attached to later copies of Underworld, or some future product.

So now I know what I'm going to be doing at the show this year! (must remember to take a selection of hats/glasses/false beards!)

Great news!

Too bad we in the US have to wait for November. Ah well, it's not that much later.

(Still... is anyone in the D.C. area going to Essen?)

Maybe when you play 3 player with tunnels you use the 2 two-player boards.

That would help keep the world smaller. But it might also involve blocking parts of the board(s). If that's the case then they would probably use cardboard to handle that.

Even so, a rulebook plus some cardboard doesn't seem like it would cost very much. My guess is $10. Or maybe $15 max.

Apparently I forgot to place one word from the press release in this news item, that being that the expansion will be "freely available" in European and U.S. game stores. Not sure whether there will be a purchase requirement, store owners will be showering them on customers as they enter the door, or what. More details closer to its release date, I imagine...

Digging through all the chits in Small World with Small World: Cursed! and Small World: Be Not Afraid... is a nightmare. I couldn't imagine being 'the chit guy' for all of these combined with Small World Underground. Count me out...it does sound fun though.

I also think that with the tunnels the game is starting to lose it's "beauty and simplicity". It will become fiddly and take much longer to finish.

Look for completeness within oneself rather than from external items.

Considering the last time somebody asked about playing Small World as a semi-casual game, I pointed to all the tokens and said something along the lines "might be a bit of a rough start", I think you're perfectly right

Unless you, like, have an iron lung or need dialysis or something, then I recommend you still hold on to some external items for completeness...

Reminds me a little of the old Microprose game Master of Magic (which I used to play a lot of years ago). Not saying it's inspired by it or anything, just reminded me of it is all.

Get thyself some Plano boxes. Makes being the chit guy pretty easy. A single #3600 box will hold all the expansions (Necro Island, Be Not Afraid, Cursed, and Grand Dames) very nicely. You just need to request some extra dividers (they are free) from Plano to accommodate everything. A second box would be needed for the Underground box and any additional expansions.
