Laguna Seca: slipstreams, the Corkscrew, crashes, spins and a worthy winner.

Race 2 in the Floen Formula D league was taking place at the sunny Californian track of Laguna Seca from Formula Dé Circuits 23 - 26: USA Track Pack #1

Per the rules the finishers of last race are flipped and make up the starting positions.

Ivar was the last car to pass the line in the last race so he was slated for pole, but sadly had to drop out due to family commitments. The winner of the season opener, Frank also had to drop out and therefore the 3 drivers that finished took the first 3 spots. The rest was decided by die rolls. Lowest started 4th and so on.
The grid leventually ooked like this:
1. Eirik 2. Mads
3. Kjetil 4. Erik
5. Stig Morten 6. Øystein

Everyone roleld a normal start and got some speed into corner 1, and unlike the first race this was the last time the track was crowded. The first corner on this track does separate the field more than Monaco does and such Eirik and Mads got inot the corner before the rest. Kjetil and Erik got in after that and Stig Morten and Øystein was the backmarkers.
Mads valued high speed through teh first corner and such burned 3 tires here to keep up with Eirik.
Corner 4 saw Eirik miss by 1 pip and Mads sliptream into the corner. it was to be only the first of several slipstreams today. most of them would see Kjetil move down the field.
Eirik and Mads got into The Corkscrew together and that was when Erik got his moment in the spotlight. He missread The Corkscrew as a 1 stopper and as such rolled 6th gear to get into it from a couple of spots inot the preceading straight. He rolled a healthy 29 and had to use his 3 brakes to remain in the corner, and not die outright. But since he had used all his brakes to remain in the corner he wouldn't be able to get lower than 4th next turn, and with a minimum roll of 7 and a maximum tire amount of 6, you can do the math. Not a good position. The mistake was spotted and as a penalty he was placed behind Stig Morten and Øystein in corner 4. It was a bit too early to die due to a missreading. The party of 5 was not unanimously in favour of letting him live, but we made that desicion. It will probably be discussed at length for years to come.
So with Eirik and Mads on the second stop in the Corkscrew and Kjetil missing it by 1 pip it was time to slipstream again. This time it was Stig Morten that rolled a 19 to take advantage of green car to move into 3rd. Øystein and Erik had missed the fifth corner by a cuple of pips and therefore had to slow down. Missing corners and slowing down would be the order of the day for Øystein in his first ever Formula D race, but he was a happy camper that rolled for collisions several times with Erik for the remainder of the first lap. Coming hot into the corners after the Corkscrew Mads faced one of Formula D's most tense moments. Rolling the green die and knowing that you will spin on 11 and crash and burn on 12.
The green die skipped and hopped across the Californian countryside and landed on....

Yes, you guessed it correctly. It landed on 12 and the white car Mads used became a wreck, and with it went the chance Mads had to make up the 2 point margin frank had in the championship after the first race.

Eirik was again the leader with Stig Morten speeding up behind him and Kjetil finshing up the podium contenders at the moment. Erik and Øystein was having their own little private fight behind Kjetil.

All cars went into the pits after the first lap and this showed us how important pit positions are in this game.

Kjetil took his short pitstop and started racing ddown the straight. Then Øystein rolled and made his pit, but failed the quickstop roll so he was stranded in his yellow box and saw Erik zoom past in fifth gear and roll 9 or 10(Don't remember) to exit in fourh gear and gain a full turn on Øystein. All because of pit stop boxes.
Eirik maintained his lead ahead of Stig Morten. Kjetil missed the first corner by (You guessed it again!) 1 pip and Erik rolled the exact number needed to slipstream past him and into third. Øystein would drive the rest of the race on his own behind the others, but the action up front was far from over.
It was time for THE CORKSCREW again! Always fun and on a completely different topic. Probably the best corner in all of Gran Turismo 5

With Eirik needing a stop on the straight before the corner he was on his first stop in the Corkscrew when Stig Morten faced the best desicion in Formula D.
Should I use the blue 6th gear die and experience breakneck speeds and oceans of fun, or should go safe with the purple 5th gear die and hand the win to Eirik now!
The time it took to decide what to do is too short to measure and the blue die soon came to a halt on 30. Stig Morten had taken the lead and hadthe gears, brakes and engine points to make a second stop in 2nd gear, but would he do that?
With Eirik just barely into the Corkscrew and being able to roll fourth gear for his second stop, Stig Morten was again faced with having to make a decision.
Should he go safe in 2nd gear but risk missing the following corner or go risky in 3rd to have a better chance of getting into the following corner alongside Eirik and fight for the win?
Again the win counts for something and as such the red 3rd gear die came out. it is kinda risky to roll 3rd when you spin on 7 and crash on 8, but a win is a win and it feels good to win, but the blasted die stopped on 7, and the driver in front of Eirik suffered bad karma again. In the first lap Mads in his white car crashed from the lead, and now Stig Morten in the other white car spun while in the lead. Eirik regained the lead and would hold it past the finsihline for a worthy win. He had kept out of trouble all the race and such could cruise home 1 roll ahead of the second driver even if he missed a corner on the way home.
With Eirik cruising home for the win and Kjetil and Øystein racing their own unneventfull races behind, the action now was in Erik's hands. Could he overtake the a Stig Morten that couldn't afford another overshoot through the last 3 corners?
Stig Morten rolled good numbers in 1st and 2nd gear to get into the corner and after getting into the penultimate corner in third, Erik had a chance to get level with Stig Morten and have tires to spare for the last corner. if Erik got into the penultimate corner by rolling 10 or higher in 4th gear he would most likely take the second spot on the podium and make it a 1-2 for he Blue team.
The green die didn't come through for Erik and he missed his chance to overtake Stig Morten.
Stig Morten took second and Erik took 3rd after briefly holding the lead in the Corkscrew on the first lap after starting 4th before being put back in 6th position and then working his way up to thrid again.
Kjetil crossed the line for fourth and Øystein declared a safe race in and took fifth positon at Alguna Seca and the pole for next race.

Great read Stig.

The Team Championship looks particularly tight for those top 3 teams.

How many races will feature in this Championship?

The plan is to have 10 races. That should see us do 1 race per month till May.

And Eirik has promised to make a trophy similar to the Piston Cup trophy from Cars. Will be fun to see how that turns out.
