One of the problems that Star Fleet Battles has struggled with for... decades by this point, is electronic piracy. While the game is complex, the components are simple, and ever since the rise of BBSes, there have been problems with copies of SSDs being traded around on the net. Since most products in the line are vehicles for presenting new ships, that is is a problem for ADB's bottom line, and the root cause of their generally anti-electronic stance, which has thawed somewhat recently.

This Tuesday, ADB made a PDF version of the Basic Set SSD book available through e23 for $7.50.

Traditionally, SSDs are photocopied by players for use in the game. Today, a lot of people have spent a fair amount of time scanning their SSDs in so that it easy to print out what's needed on a moment's notice. Now, there's a way (for a few, but common, ships) to be available for printing out without going through that time, and without needing a scanner. And of course, the quality is very good, since this is straight from the electronic file that generates the printed book.

However:
Steve V. Cole wrote:
We are considering the idea of putting most of the SFB SSDs on e23. However, there is concern over piracy. There is also concern over sales. Frankly, how well basic set sells (and how much trouble we have with pirates) will determine if any others are ever uploaded. If you want the SSD book for module this or that, buy the basic set one if you're serious.

This is the current version. Not every SSD has necessarily been updated with the most recent bells and whistles such as advanced shuttles and crawford boxes. We will do that when we have time (new products come first) and you'll get the update free.

I always resisted putting stuff on e23 because of pirates. We have had 10 times as many pirates since e23 as before, and for exactly the reason I predicted (you don't have to scan a copy to upload it). Joel spends at least a day a week hunting pirates and demanding that the files be taken down. Sales have been steady but I had been led to believe (by those of you who campaigned for this stuff) that we'd be selling five times as many.

So, if you think this is a good thing for ADB to be doing, discourage piracy when you see it, spread the word that this PDF version is for sale, and of course, consider if it is worth $7.50 to you.

I will also note, that the Basic Set SSDs are missing a few features compared to more recent ones.

Steve V. Cole wrote:
Steve Petrick, intrigued by my incremental way of doing some tasks, has agreed to update one SSD per day until they're all done. (This won't happen on some really busy days, or days he is not here, but then some days he might do two or them.) Today he actually did the first six. Counting the front page as done, that's 7/48.

If you have an e23 account when you buy the PDF, you will automatically be informed when an update is posted.

Oh sweet! I noticed they had the SFB Master Rulebook on e23 now, so this is a wonderful thing. My already bloated SFB collection can use a new, updated rulebook. With updated SSDs, that's even better.

This is a blatant example of frivolous spending.

One set of Basic Set SSDs has been ordered.

Also all of the Starmada conversion ship record sheets, too.

Cool! Are the rulebooks searchable PDFs? Then again, like many of you, I've been playing long enough that I probably don't need a searchable copy of the rules, but it's nice to have the option.

Do you just mean the normal acrobat 'find' function? That's easy in the rulebooks since those are done off actual text/layout files. The Captain's Logs they've put up are not searchable, because those are scans of old issues.

One thing I am excited about this news was not making the SSD file in downloadable format but the actual existence of people still playing the game intensively. The universe is still alive and well. This is the proof that the community is still active and perhaps, growing. I always think that most of the SFB/ Amarillo Design Bureau stuff should be made available online, not the least SSDs. Especially for those who had bought the games from Amarillo Design Bureau directly, we should be entitled to the free access to the electronic copy of the rules and manuals, something not unlike GMT Games. For examples, I bought the Star Fleet Battles Silver Anniversary Master Rulebook but couldn't hang on it for long because of its non-binding format coming with it, making the continuing reading difficult. A PDF format can help me to read both way, searching the key words on the go. The fact is that the genuine players tend to spread the words and organize more plays of the games of the Star Fleet Universe. Stephen V. Cole should think big. If Amarillo Design Bureau make the files more available and free, I am sure I have no problem to organize meeting after meeting, with dedicated gamers for several long sessions, just to play the games of Star Fleet Universe. As to the issue of piracy, I think the more people get to experience the games, the more people going after the genuine stuffs. The privacy is just for those who have a freak about collecting everything. The free download files are just to help facilitate the genuine players organizing their games instead of what and which manuals and scenarios to scan before the gathering.

Since I have a laser printer but not a photocopier, this would have saved me some trouble. As a bonus, I already love e23 and buy a ton of Gurps books there! My excitement deflated when I got to this quote from Steve Cole, though:

I don't know what to make of that attitude. "If I'm serious?" Really?

Perfect, thanks. I'm glad to see they have CL#1 up there; mine is missing and I'd love to get my hands on the Juggernaut scenario.

Steve Cole has been developing and producing games for thirty years and he has been burnt more than once by publishing a product that had plenty of people asking for it but very few actually buying it. It's easy in this internet age for people to text that they really want and would buy pdf SSDs, but the real test is to see if they put their money where their mouth is. I'd say this is what he means by serious, so if people want to see more pdf SSDs they will have to prove the point by buying the Basic set.

And the Basic Set update has happened. From the Federation Commander blog:

Steven Petrick wrote:
Well, the update of the Basic Set SSD book is done. It is all assembled, SVC has paged through it and referred a matter to Jean Sexton, and the matter has been resolved and the corrections made. It will probably go to Leanna tomorrow, and show up on e23 soon after that.

What does the update entail?

Well, every ship and base has its appropriate Crawford table.

All the refits where applicable and possible to do are noted on each SSD with the year they are available. So for the most part you can look at your SSD and determine if the year you have chosen to play the scenario in allows a given SSD. There are some exceptions here, i.e., Partial X Refits (impossible to do as there are too many variations any given ship can use) and mech-link refits are not listed. The Gorns are all have the Carronade data, and there is a mention of its availability on the Orion SSD. All plasma ships have Sabot data (there is some data indicating that sublight warbirds might still have been around in Y180

All the shuttle tracks are updated (there are still three ships in Basic Set that do not get advanced shuttles, so they do not have them on their SSD page).

The Romulan Warbird Cruiser has been updated as best I can to account for the new information that was published in the Early Years Modules. It is obviously one of the ships that does not get advanced shuttles, and also does not get the Sabot refit (would any of them still have been around as Warbirds in Y180?).

The small and large freighter SSDs include space to insert any skids or ducktails from Module R8 and R11.

And, of course, all references to "aft hull" or "A hull" have been changed to "rear hull" or "R hull."

I have my copy of the .pdf, very convenient, the upgrade is a solid improvement too, now if only it were easy to convince people at my club to the greatness of ADB products.

And the value of subsidizing those who created them, in hopes they will keep up their good work.
