My initial foray into playing Warmachine came six years after I bought some minis, but then gave up on the game because the minis were a pain to put together. The grunts had bodies, with heads and two arms to attach, along with backpacks and shields. The light warjacks weren't staying together for me (washing them probably would have helped) so I just packed them away and they sat on my shelf.
Mike and Rob were playing last Friday and I went down to the store to see how the game played. Erik was also there checking out the game, so Mike and Rob set us up to duel each other. I didn't want to play Mike's Inquisition, umm, Protectorate, so I got Rob's Khador minis, which were painted. It was a battle box vs. battle box game.
Erik moved his light Repenter along my right flank while the Crusader and Revenger advanced up the middle. I used the Destroyer and Juggernaut as a shield as I advanced up the middle. I thought I was in charge range with the Juggernaut to take down the Repenter, but ended up maybe 1/8" short. It would have been in range in Malifaux!
I took a shot with the Destroyer at the Crusader and positioned Sorscha to take a shot Kreoss or the Revenger. Little did I know how truly vulnerable these models were, as Kreoss used his feat to knock down all my models and charged Sorscha with the Revenger. Erik just managed to kill her with it and the Repenter, which is lucky for him, because I would have been able to crush his puny tin cans and finish him off.
It was quick, and fun, and let me see that I would like to play the game some more, so I started working on getting my Rhulic Mercenary figures together. I have a 15- and 25-point army progression planned and only had to buy a couple of figures to make it happen. All hail the Searforge Commission!
I have some non-Rhulic Mercs for trade or sale, if anyone is interested. I have (in original packaging, though the models may have been cleaned up some) Warcaster Ashlynn D'Elyse, the Captain Sam MacHorne & the Devil Dogs box plus 2 blisters of (4) troopers for a full unit, a Mule Heavy Warjack, and a Talon Light Warjack. I also have a Vanguard Light Warjack which is mostly assembled and primed (white with some areas inked black to prep for painting silver).
I was also looking at possibly playing Hordes, though I am still not sure which faction I will choose. Skorne is out because the armor on the figures looks like a pain to paint with the red inside and all the gold trim. Yes, I am that adverse to doing that much painting myself.
Someone, somewhere, referred to the Legion of Everblight as the undead faction, so they were out before I knew they were Elves, which sealed the deal. The Minion/Merc factions look pretty undeveloped at this point, so I am leaning toward going with either the Trollbloods or Circle Oboros. I was actually able to hold onto my wallet and decided to wait until I got some more Warmachine games under my belt and most of my un-built Malifaux figures put together before starting a faction. We'll see how long my resolve lasts.
