As I'm preparing to build the initial prototype of Just in Time I've been pondering some of the mechanics and what other options I may have with them. One thing that occurred to me was that I do not necessarily need to have a big deck of event cards for handling the dynamic timeline.
Another option that I have is to create a sort of template card system, perhaps something along the lines of thicker cards such as those included in Mr. Jack. Using these I could just have 7 of them (vs hundreds of event cards), leave certain areas of the card blank and use some tokens or dice to randomly setup the events.
Comparison Time!
Event Cards
Pros: Quick and easy to setup Custom flavor per card
Cons: Over 1,000 possible events, can't include them all
Template Cards
Pros: Fewer components Can create all possible variations of events
Cons: Is a bit more involved to setup Flavor text is limited
Verdict I don't know... Personally I prefer the ability to generate any conceivable event, increasing the overall randomness of the events and potentially increasing the challenge of the game as well. Though at the same time, I'm not sure that the additional complexity will be welcomed. I'm not as concerned about the flavor text, but it is a minor point to consider.
What say you on the matter?
