There were just 4 of us. We started with Airships while waiting for Richard to arrive, with Sami getting an early lead on dice, and hence doing well on Airships while Colin and I were building up our income – I was having problems in particular because all the best cards available always overbuilt my existing ones, which meant I got a bit of a slow start.
Then we decided to open the last of our The Works games – Royal Palace. This game was on our watchlist the year it was released, but just missed the buylist, so I was happy to buy it at The Works discount and see what it was like. It seemed a fairly typical worker placement game, but with some nice twists because of the movement around the board, the way your men jump on and off the board the whole time, and also the tiles getting cheaper as time goes on. I enjoyed it and look forward to playing again soon. We all tried different strategies, and it was interesting to see how they developed – Sami went for lots of tiles that got him more gems income, while Colin went for a heavy money strategy and points at end-game from majorities, Richard went for high VP tiles, while I went the opposite way and bought lots and lots of cheap tiles, but picked up what turned out to be some nice movement abilities on the way.
Next we pulled out Montego Bay – another Works game, that Richard and I had tried, but not the other two. It was quite different with 4, with a lot more blocking while moving, and from the way we were placing our men, ships tended to sail either totally full, or almost completely empty!! Certainly not a bad purchase, although it’s never going to be a favourite.
After that we returned to more familiar fare, firstly Vegas Showdown, a favourite of mine (I was choosing!). Richard went for the green strategy, which seemed to confuse Colin, as he kept trying to buy things he didn’t have pre-requisites for as a result! Colin and I were vying for highest income, and this turned out to net us a lot of points at the end, and Sami didn’t do too well, being very unlucky with the timing of certain cards coming up. Then we picked Schrille Stille, a light game about pop charts that I really enjoy. Sami got out to an early lead, consistently getting his bands near the top, and having more luck predicting No1 and high rising bands than most of us, and somehow didn’t get picked on for a few rounds, and then it all went horribly wrong as we all picked on him together, just as end-game hit, which moved all Colin’s bands up, so that he had 5 of the top 6 positions and went flying past Sami for the win. Next came Factory Fun – this time without handicapping ourselves to help Richard, as he proved last time he didn’t need that! Somehow it all worked brilliantly for me – with every machine I got just fitting in perfectly, even when I was last to pick one and was just getting everyone’s leftovers, so I won by a considerable margin with 14 efficiency. After that it was nearly midnight, so we played Incan Gold, very much a game where staying in was good, so as you might expect, Sami won, with Colin a close second, while Richard and I left before all the big payouts so were way behind. Then we just had time for a 7 Wonders, and headed to bed.
