Asmodee's Stefan Brunelle has sent me an updated release schedule for North America for titles that Asmodee is either publishing itself or distributing. Here's what you can expect to see from Asmodee over the next four months:

November 2011
-----Cyclades (restock)
-----Hattari (pub: Moonster Games)
-----Jungle Speed: Rabbids
-----Mr. Jack (restock; pub: Hurrican)
-----Québec (pub: Le Scorpion Masqué/Ystari)
-----Takenoko (pub: Matagot)

December 2011
-----Dr. Shark (pub: Hurrican)
-----Eclipse (pub: Lautapelit.fi)
-----Evo (new edition)

January 2012
-----Gosu: Kamakor (pub: Moonster Games)
-----Skull & Roses Red (pub: lui-même)

February 2012
-----Bonbons (pub: Game Works)
-----Cyclades: Hades (pub: Matagot)
-----Mundus Novus
-----Offboard (pub: Tactic)
-----Sidi Baba (pub: Hurrican)
-----Tschak! (pub: Game Works)

• Spanish publisher nestorgames has released Cameron Browne's Hop it!. Players control a team of tadpoles and frogs, and they move one piece each turn. Tadpoles scoot along one space at a time, moving only into empty areas, while frogs can either move like a tadpole or jump over one or more pieces (as long as at least one enemy piece is jumped). When jumped, enemy frogs are removed, and tadpoles of both colors mature into frogs. A frog must jump an enemy piece when possible, so forced maturation can lead to subsequent forced moves – and any frog stuck on a lilypad for more than a turn gets eaten by the birds surrounding the pond.

Eruption from Chris James and Stratus Games, which debuted at Spiel 2011 in limited numbers, has a worldwide release date of November 9, 2011.

Out of the Box Publishing has announced a trio of expansions due out February 2012:
-----Word on the Street: Expansion 1, with another 216 double-sided category cards
-----Faux•Cabulary: Expansion 1 and Expansion 2, each with new word-segment dice and new definition cards

Clever Mojo Games has announced Haathi – an elephant-racing game from Bruno Faidutti, Sérgio Halaban and André Zatz – with a prospective release date of late 2012 or early 2013. CMG has not released much detail about the game other than the following blurb: Haathi "depicts a fantastical elephant race through the villages, jungles, and mountains of storybook India. Haathi is light enough to entice young gamers and competitive enough to test experienced game enthusiasts."

• Cliff Bohm and Geoff Bottone's High Noon Saloon is due out in early November 2011 from Slugfest Games.

• Designer Rainer Habekost has announced on BGG that Flying Buffalo Games is importing TF22 – which has many similarities to Full Métal Planète – for sale in the U.S. at a retail price of $189.

• Oh my, should I really post another list of game-related Kickstarter projects? Folks seem to like investigating these projects and seeing what others are both pitching to gamers and supporting, so here goes:

-----—Joseph Murray's Shadow Days (Black Tea Studios, KS link), which includes a special BoardGameGeek user reward.

-----—James T. Kato's Imperial Crusade Armada (KS link)

-----—Aaron Belmer's Sanitarium (Asmadi Games, KS link), for which I posted a designer diary from Belmer on BGG News

-----—The collectible card game Time Wars (KS link)

-----—Andy Erickson's Hench: The Game (KS link), with "hench" referring to those henchmen who assist your evil plans for world domination and non-fattening cupcakes

For anyone interested in Kickstarter games check out my geeklist: Boardgame Kickstarter Projects. It is still active and (I believe) the most up to date list on BGG of current Kickstarter projects. Feel free to post any projects to it that you don't see represented.

I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I'm actually getting tired of Kickstarter projects for games. I'm not trying to single out any specific games here, but:
* They usually have too little information to let buyers make an informed decision about the game.
* They often include promo cards that won't be available otherwise, leading completists like me to wonder if they game will only be "right" if it's bought through the Kickstarter.

Yes, pre-orders have always been a part of the gaming industry, but Kickstarters tend to happen earlier in the process than traditional pre-orders (since they are looking for money to fund production of the game), and generally come with the implication that the game will only be published if the company can get this money up front.

I can understand the appeal of this to publishers, but really, one of the roles of the publisher is to find games that are worth taking on the risk of publishing. Kickstarters effectively shift some of that risk to the customers. I'm not against crowd-sourcing in general, but in this case, I don't think the customers are getting anything in return for taking on the risk of buying games based on a 4-minute video. (Other than access to those promo cards, and like I said, that comes across as more of a detriment to the people who would buy it later than a bonus for the early adopters.)

I know, I'm free to simply not fund Kickstarters. If others want to, that's their choice. But personally, I think I've reached a point where I'll be a lot LESS likely to buy a game if it originally launched on Kickstarter, given that at that point it's too late to get the complete card set.

PS: I should point out that of the 5 Kickstarters linked to in this article, 1 of them (Imperial Crusade Armada) has a rulebook posted on BGG and a link to a Dice Tower review so that people can hear an independent opinion. (Edit: Eric pointed out this is a paid ad.) This is the sort of information I'd like to see become standard before people are asked to pre-order. (The game still has a promo card available only the early supporters, but at least it's closer to my ideal.)

Another thing you skip over is the level of research different people do when purchasing games. Clearly you research games heavily, watch reviews, read comments, etc before making up your mind. So for you basing your decision on a Kickstarter video seems like a big risk.

I don't always spend that much time researching before I decide to purchase so it's about on the same level as far as what I know or suspect about a game. I often take just as much "risk" buying a game published in 1997 as I do when I decide to Kickstart something.

As far as completionism goes all I can say is too bad for you. Its unfortunate that it causes such a hangup for you that you might miss out on a game you would love simply because you couldn't get a promo item for it. This sounds more like your personal issue though, rather than a problem with the publishing model.

edit: FWIW I've avoided a lot of KS projects because of the vague sense of gameplay and overall lack of information about the game. The ones I've supported are Triumvirate, from Indie Boards and Cards because the description of the card play sounded unique; Eminent Domain from Tasty Minstrel because they offered rules and PnP files which I utilized (plenty of info about that game in advance); and most recently Alien Frontiers which already has a good reception and Sunrise City because I like tile laying games and this can fill a gap in my collection there, both games from Clever Mojo.

I haven't once felt like I didn't have enough info to make an informed decision on the games I've supported. However, that might only be because I am selective of the games I backed already.

If Claustrophobia: De Profundis is not already at stores near you, it should be soon as U.S. distributors list it as in stock and some online retailers show it as being available.

I agree, but folks seem to like hearing of these Kickstarter projects, so I'll keep posting links to them in the future.

Except that The Dice Tower "review" is actually a "paid preview", as noted at the start of that video.

I agree that publishers, especially new ones with no record for readers to judge, would do themselves a favor by releasing rulebooks for their games – except, of course, for cases in which the game or rulebook are no good, thereby killing potential sales. As with most other things, caveat emptor...

I enjoy hearing the Kickstarter updates in BoardGameNews when its relative to something else. For example, the designer diary and the BoardGameGeek reward. I also follow the Geeklists and the Purple Pawn updates so perhaps I'm in the minority. It is news and the Kickstarter model has brought us some great and/or improved games so we can't ignore it.

As a side note I do like the sound of Shadow Days and I hope it reaches its pledge amount so I get a copy.

The rule book for Shadow Days is also available from the Black Tea studios website. I cannot attest to the availability of others, but I know several kickstarter games have released the rules in advance in the past. Eminent Domain was made available as a print and play with almost complete rules.

FWIW, Sanitarium will be available to play at BGGCon and its full rules will be posted probably right after the con. I agree that promo cards and whatnot are frustrating, so I try and gear our Kickstarter campaigns toward providing neat things like art prints. It is a useful tool for us small publishers, who simply cannot afford to take risks on large printing projects!

I loved the look of the game at Spiel, but alas only one printed copy was available – and that copy ended up in the BGG library for play at BGG.CON.

I wonder if the Hades delay is a recent happening, several OLGS have pre-orders for this, showing a release of November/December.

The previous release date for Cyclades: Hades in North America (based on info I received in August) was November 2011. Possibly – and I'm guessing here – Matagot and Asmodee want to get restock of the base game out first before shipping an expansion.

I should've said that more clearly. I can enjoy a game without having the "complete" thing, but I don't like it when I get the impression that the missing pieces may actually be important. At this past Origins, I had the opportunity to play a prototype of a game that was up on KS. About halfway through, the designer mentioned that several of the cards were promo-only. These were cards that played a major role in the game, and the strategies and flow would have very different without them. I couldn't imagine treating the "basic" version of the game as a full one after learning that. That experience left me feeling cautious about games that come with promo expansions right out of the gate. Even if I hear afterwards that the game is great, how do I know if those reviews are based on a version I can't get? That's why I'd be less likely to buy a game if it initially shipped with a no-longer-available add-on.

I like what Angelkurisu has to say below about their promos. Art prints, replacement bits that don't change gameplay, etc seem perfectly fair.

I don't expect Eric to stop posting links to Kickstarter campaigns. They are news, and we can see in this thread that a lot of people like them. I wanted to bring up my concerns, though, and I'm glad to see that some publishers are aware of those potential problems.

I can understand the desire to make something collectible, but it's bothered me a lot in the video game realm when I'm missing pieces of my game because I play it on the PC as opposed to a console, or I didn't pre-order so I don't get some bit of content. It's a bit more of a money-grab there, because they can charge for downloaded content later -- but it's not like a late buyer of a board game can say 'You know what, I like this game! I wouldn't mind paying the extra five bucks to get these special cards' even if they wanted to.

I personally will not pre-order anything with Kickstarter. For me, there is just too much unknown. The production quality, the game play, etc. I will wait until it comes out so I can make a better decision by reading reviews and comments, etc.

But, I do like to hear about it and follow games that use it (Manhattan Project comes to mind).

Eclipse will be in North-America in November, but in the last week. December is just to make sure all stores will have it in stock.

For Hades...Matagot announced first for October. Productions delay is the only comment they made. We are waiting more news about some releases, the publishers reported a lot of our games this year. I will send the info to Eric as soon as we get them.

There will apparently be a "light" version with cardboard for significantly less (see pictures in game entry).

Would like to note that Warparty is also on kickstarter for 18 more days. We are getting close to our funding level. The rules are available for download on our BGG page.

Here is our kickstarter link, there are also 2 videos on that page.

Our designer diary should be up soon.

We actually changed the games name from Time Wars to Time Flux and have relaunched on Kickstarter with a much lower goal.

Would like to note that Warparty is also on kickstarter for 18 more days. We are getting close to our funding level. The rules are available for download on our BGG page.

Here is our kickstarter link, there are also 2 videos on that page.

We have just released a free print and play PDF file on our Kickstarter page. Go check it out and let us know how you feel about our game! The file can be found in our update section in update #4 or just under our Kickstarter Video.
