iOS Review: THE aMAZEing Labyrinth

Brad Cummings

The Stats:
Compatibility: Separate Versions for iPad and iPhone
Current Price: $3.99 (iPhone), $5.99 (iPad),
Developer/Publisher: Ravensburger Digital
Version: 1.0
Size: 38.2  MB
Multiplayer: Pass and play and Online Multiplayer
AI: Single Player Puzzle Mode
Itunes link:THE aMAZEing Labyrinth - iPhone THE aMAZEing Labyrinth HD - iPad

Conclusion:
The aMAZEing Labyrinth HD is a good adaptation of a classic game. It is clear that the developers over at Ravensburger Digital have been watching the app store and have attempted to make an app that fits in that space. The game may be targeted at children and families (and it serves these targets well), but it also features a puzzle mode with 80 levels that will challenge many players. The many of modes of this game really make it one that has something for everyone and every situation.

My physical copy of the game is called The aMAZEing Labyrinth and doesn't have the cool figures, just wooden pawns. It's a fun game and my daughter loves it. The puzzle mode in this app looks pretty cool; I'll probably get this. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the great review. I was just playing the boardgame with my son last night.

The iOS version looks cool too but the boy already spends too much time on the iPad!

It's too bad they didn't just make it a universal app... bit of a money grab for those who would want it on both devices. And I am personally disappointed that there is no AI.

At least they released both versions at the same time.

I've actually never played the physical boardgame, but was thinking of picking this up. However the lack of AI, not being universal, and the price(s) are all turn-offs for me.

I'm really bummed there isn't an AI.

However, not bummed enough to pass it by. I picked it up this evening and am really looking forward to introducing my daughter to the game tomorrow after dinner!

Personally I'm supper happy about apps coming out in two versions like this. Given the choice between a universal price of likely $9.99 or two separate prices of $3.99/$5.99, I'll go for the split pricing any day.

I didn't originally feel this way but in many cases I now know what game I want on an iPad and what game I want on an iPhone. In this case, I will only be buying the iPad version as it looks like the game really needs the extra screen real estate. To me, the same is true with Elder Sign Omens and in both cases, I'm happy that I can get a cheaper iPad only version then the more likely pricier universal version if it had existed.

I actually hope this becomes a trend as I definitely prefer it then seeing games settle in at a $10 universal pricing. Even that statement is a bit funny as I typically drop $40 to $50 on a board game, but $10 for an app still feels high. Thankfully in this case, it's just $6 in my iPad only case.

And the comments threads are treacherous as well. Ended up Starbase Orion after reading one this morning...

I'm disappointed this doesn't have asynchronous play. Would have been an instant buy for me if it did.

Additionally, I'm disappointed it's not universal. Hard to believe $4 is an "introductory" price for an iPhone only version. I would probably have spent the $6 if it was universal. As is I'm pretty much only going to buy one or the other... and it'll probably be the iPhone version (in hopes they add asynchronous play later -- for async game, I want to have them on me at all times, thus the iPhone).

Maybe I'm just in hyper-critical mode here, but this is only the second of these video reviews I've watched all the way through. They are totally great, and in this one especially, I really appreciated pretty much everything in the video, but... (here it comes) ...it REALLY comes across that you're reading from a script. I think you should work on reading in as casual a voice as possible, Brad. It was pretty painful at times. Absolutely great review otherwise, though, thanks!

PS, it occurs to me that, assuming you do have a script, I would really appreciate if you posted the transcript. I almost never watch the videos while I'm at work, but I do get away with checking BGG a few times throughout the day... text-only.

I ended up buying a copy for my iPhone. The puzzle mode is fun, and will have fun playing it (pass and play) with my girlfriend when in bed or on travels. Still hope they add an AI to play against (and I did mention that in an email to them). Don't own an iPad now... but still disappointed that it's not universal app for if I was to pick one up later.

Left count is the number of different board games played in 2012. Right number is the total number of games played in 2012. I'm hoping to get at least 100 different titles played this year.

On the iPhone I can barely discern the treasures I am supposed to be looking for-an exercise in eye strain. Too bad there is no zoom function within the game.

Lack of AI, as others note, is disappointing too... seems like AI for this one should have been trivial to code up, with only a maximum of 44 plays each turn (11 locations to slide with possibly 4 different orientations of the tile, if it isn't symmetric). Plus the AI doesn't 'know' what the opponent is after. Really baffling to me why that wasn't in there.

My 8-year-old son found the app on my phone and it spurred him to get out my Master Labyrinth game so we could play the Master version, and then the Amazeing version with only 20 tokens and the top symbol on all but one of the 21 triples cards. I think I'll stick to the board version since I can see it better. He liked the Amazeing variant better.

Thanks for the review. Bought the app for the iPad and for the iPhone as well. I knew about the missing AI, but I was in for some more disappointments:

The iPad and the iPhone versions are unable to play together. So you will not only pay twice for two versions, but on top of that they don't connect.

Finally we experienced crashes when playing online and there are reports that others are having the same problem. This makes the missing AI even much worse. Solo-play in standard mode isn't possible due to the lack of AI and the multiplayer online game occasionally crashes.

And for the rest: Puzzle-mode is nice, but the "weeks of entertainment" as advertised were finished after 3 days for me. Regarding the time duel mode, it is a nice challenging bonus, but games of that quality can be found in dozens in the app store.

So without AI, crashing online play and 3 days worth of puzzles it seems hardly enough to justify the price of this app if you compare it to what you can get in the app store for the same money.

I guess the developers still need to do some homework, so I am hoping for an update now...

Edit: Another problem with the "non-universal-app" I noted: Since the two versions don't connect, they are of course divided into different groups in the game-center. That again naturally adds to the time needed to find an online opponent. And after you had a 3-5 minute wait for an opponent, your online game will crash about 1 in 5 times...

I'm not at all impressed with Ravensburger Digital thus far. They haven't seemed to wrap their heads around this whole iOS thing yet.

This one, like Ramses, will live in the AppShopper queue for as long as it takes for these guys to get with the program.
