I haven't made much progress lately. Pardon me. I have made ANY progress lately. Having printed out a couple of test runs let me look at the gameboard and the score card next to each other. Individually they look ok, but together... I'm not sure I'd really think they belonged to the same game. There just isn't anything that ties them together other than the blood spatters and the name of the game that appears on each.

Ok, in my mind, they're tied together by the idea that the map and bowling score card were grabbed from a car's glovebox and used by the survivors to get the hell out of town: the map to navigate and note certain locations and hazards, and the score card as a random piece of paper to track supplies and survivors. They fit together quite nicely, actually... as long as you know those little tidbits.

The problem is, when I have this game crafted and in my collection, I fully expect others to play (and enjoy) it. That means they need to understand the link between the gameboard and the score card. And that means there will need to be some flavour text somewhere to explain it.

I suppose that means I have to include the rules sheet as something I'll be working on. With this, however, I'll need to add some fluff text as well as visuals.

The flavour/fluff text... I'll need to put my writing hat on, and I'm not sure where I left it. As far as the visuals go, here are some initial ideas for the general look for the rules sheet(s):

1. Look like a small pocket notepad commonly seen in farm trucks (in the glovebox!!!). Check this link for examples of what I'm talking about:

Hmm... a possible opportunity to use that machete advertisement...

2. Look like a battered old leather journal. I've seen several games do this recently, and I like how it looks. Might be a bit much for this, though.

3. Look like just a few sheets of old, stained paper. Perhaps with flavour text making it look like a letter written to someone warning of the zombie outbreak.

4. ???

I'll have to think on this a while, but I'm leaning toward #1 right now.

Maybe you could fit the dice pools (in a different design) and the admission ticket onto the main board. That way, the bowling score pad would contain only the scores and would not look out of place – it's a separate thing that'd blend in with the other objects on the map. (that's badly written, but I don't know how to express myself more clearly. sorry!)

Also, I am irritated by the crosses on the track. Wouldn't it be better if the spaces were boxes or spots?

Overall, I think your ideas are brilliant, and you did a really good job with the design.

You've hit one of the main things I struggled with when attempting this re-skin project. I probably could fit everything onto the main gameboard (the map), but then most of the map would be obscured and the look I'm trying to give it really wouldn't be noticeable. This could be solved by making the gameboard bigger (11"x17" perhaps?), but I'd rather keep it at the standard size of either 8.5"x11" or A4. Getting everything onto a single page is economical and very handy -- but Mads has already done a great job of that with the original game; I sort of expected that I'd need to separate it out to a gameboard and a score card. I just need to tie them together now, I that's where I'm thinking about the fluff/flavour text to go with the rules sheet.

That, or start over with a different idea for the score card (and/or the gameboard). It's not out of the realm of possibility, but I'd like to avoid that for the moment...

Yeah, I'm still not happy with those X'es. Something just doesn't look right with them. I'm going for the hand-drawn look, but with some sort of consistency for the sake of not making the game too annoying to look at and play. Boxes I've pretty much ruled out -- I think they'd take away from the feel of the map. I have considered circles/spots, though. My only concern with them is that it wouldn't have the right sort of hand-drawn look. I might try a mock-up of the map using circles to do a comparison.

Thank you! I appreciate the time you spent having a look and your feedback!
