DotLD: Two More Board Drafts

Finally had some time to draft up two more gameboards based on comments from the previous post. First up is the gameboard using squares for the path markers:

This actually ended up looking better than I thought it would. I don't think it quite fits with the look I'm going for, though.

The second suggestion from the previous post was to use hand-drawn circles for the path markers:

Well, it certainly fits the look I'm going for. (Yes, I deliberately made the circles look sloppy and uneven. I mean, come on, if you were trying to escape from a zombie horde, would your penmanship be very neat?) Unfortunately, I think it may be a bit off-putting/annoying to actually play on.

Might have to print up all the variations thus far and see what it's like to actually play on them.

And by the way, thanks for all the suggestions! I very much appreciate the outside feedback and ideas. Cheers!

I like elephants. I like how they swing through trees.

I've been following this series, as I like the game and love what you're doing. But I agree the hand-drawn circles are off putting. So far I like the circles from the previous post the best, but maybe there's a way to make them a little less polished?

Great job in general, though!

I like the squares. What about either hand drawing the squares? Or running the squares and the original circles through a filter. Such as errode.

Also. what about trying something like the large swirly ovals, but as circles instead?

Thanks, John! I think I'm going to stay away from hand-drawing the path markers -- my attempt with the circles has shown me that I probably won't be able to make that sort of idea work. At all.

On the other hand, I am very intrigued by your suggestion to use an "erode" filter on the markers. I'll have to get a couple more drafts started.

The swirly ovals... that was actually the first thing I tried, even before the X'es. It looked incredibly bad. But then, I used the same "swirl" for them. Might look better if I used something a little different -- have to think about this again.

The hand-drawn circle version looks too sloppy, but this can easily be fixed by replacing all of the exceedingly sloppy circles with better ones. The features that I think should be eliminated are:
1. Circles that are too non-circular
2. Broken circles and circles with their line ends showing
3. Touching/overlapping adjacent circles

The bottom-middle of the track looks good. I've pointed out some really good circles in the image below. They are not too distorted, and are spaced apart nicely. If the whole board looked like that it would be much better, and I think you'd get the look you are going for.
