There were 6 of us, but never more than 5 at one time! We started with just 3 of us, needing to fill in a bit of time before the others arrived, so pulled out one of our new games, Quarriors!. We had quite a few rules queries as we were going along, but it was still a short game, lasting just under half an hour. Then the others arrived, and we needed a five player, and we chose Vinci, which was new to both Marion and Haley. We obviously were too nice to them, as they ended in first and second position!! Marion had a very bad early game, as she always seemed to have the civilization that looked most tempting to attack, but got a good mid-game civ involving Militia and lots of men, and timed her final decline better than the rest of us. I got messed up by Sami going on a rampage one turn and was unable to recover, while Colin thought the game played to 120, so chose the wrong civ on his final decline.

After that Marion suggested Peloponnes, which has had a bit of a break recently (although I personally did play it last weekend). Sami got the “extra man a turn” civilization, and as usual that proved to be very useful and he went for all the grain tiles so he had no problems feeding. Almost all the rest of us had feeding problems, not helped by the way the disasters appeared, and so it wasn’t a particularly high scoring game.

After that Marion had to disappear to collect Richard from his party, and Haley left, so we were three players for half an hour or so until Marion returned, and so we pulled out Quarriors! again. We realised partway through that we were still playing a rule wrong, but couldn’t change it mid-game – it made a lot more sense with the correct rule, as Sami and I found when we played it 2 player the next night!! Marion arrived back with Richard just as we were about to start with the right rules, so we abandoned it – unfortunately none of our new post-Essen purchases seem to handle five players!

Richard had been drinking, so was after something light and partyish, so the rest of the evening was devoted to party games – first Say Anything (What’s the biggest waste of money? – Marion chose clothes over Richard – who was protesting that he wasn’t that bad!), and then Pictureka! (Richard proved to be amazing at the blue cards, although not so good at the red ones, which meant he didn’t actually win although he did get more cards than anyone else over the course of the game) and finished with Incan Gold.

My enjoyment of Quarriors went up several notches when I realised that the game could be a deal more strategic if you allowed players to buy more than one die per turn. If you roll 9 Quiddity and there's a dragon available, with the rules as published it's a no-brainer - buy the dragon. Allow multiple buys, and is the dragon as good a purchase as two portals?
