Bobby's Games

I will be posting monthly recaps of my gaming which I have been doing in GeekLists. I'll also be commenting on games on occasion, though I can tell you that I will be behind the curve because I just don't get to play the new games as soon as some people do.

Game of the Week Five

Woo hoo! I managed to play last weeks game.

We got in a four-player of San Juan, using the extra building cards from the Alea Treasure Chest. The cards didn't seem to add too much to the game as it still came down to Michael getting the Guild Hall played while none of the rest of us were able to play a six-cost building. Next time I will add in the event cards.

This coming Saturday might see me miss gaming as I have some friends coming into town the night before. They're usually up for gaming, but they might not feel like it after a long drive into town.

My game of the week this time is going to be another Alea game. This time it is Notre Dame. The biggest reason I am choosing it is I know it is not boxed away for the remodeling and it is the one game I could think of which isn't inaccessible that doesn't get regularly played that I want to haul with me on Saturday. I don't know if I will use the cards from the Treasure Chest, but they are in the box if we do decide to use them.

I've always like the way the roles are selected each turn and there is just enough going on in the game to make the choices difficult. And the modular board is genius!

I recommend the new Notre Dame cards. It's really easy to implement, and if you haven't played in a while, you're going to have to look up the functions of the gray/ABC cards anyway. So why not mix it up?

I played Notre Dame with mixed role cards couple days ago. Tip: Instead of trying to remember in the beginning of the game which cards are in the deck, we looked at the remaining (unused) role cards during the game to see what is missing there.

Were you using the Cathedral tile as well for San Juan? That has helped mitigate getting six-cost buildings for us. Although, it's hard to understand how only one person got one six-cost building...

When we play, everyone usually gets at least one six-cost building, but getting that 2nd & 3rd one down can be the game changer. Maybe that's because we recognize the importance of those cards, so we make extra efforts not to spend them until we can build them. i.e. if I'm dealt one at the beginning of the game, I'll hold on to that card well into the game because I know it's worth a ton of points in the end..

I'll likely use the cards, though if there are new players I may stick to the original Notre Dame mix.

I forgot to punch the Cathedral and bring it along. I don't think it would have made a difference in this game, but I can see how it makes a difference.

I saw only the Palace once going through the deck 1.5 times and one of the others was feeding a baby while playing, so she was a little distracted. I don't know what Kevin saw, but it might have been one of those rare games where they just didn't come up that often because they were goods.
