iOS News: Haunted House the game Being Removed from the App Store

Game designer and iOS developer, Emanuele Ornella, contacted us to let us know that his app, Haunted House the game, is being removed from the App Store by November 25th. So you have just less than a week for your last chance to pick it up before it is gone forever.

The story is only slightly tragic in that the reason the app is being removed is because Atari has written to Emanuele asking him to rename the app, as they claim “Haunted House” is a registered trademark of Atari and they have the exclusive right to use that name in connection with video games.

At first, this got my righteously indignified fists up. Emanuele went on to tell me, however, that he will be unable to make a simple name change due to technical reasons related to the fact that the app was developed in Adobe Flash, but Emanuele is now only working in Objective-C. I certainly trust his authority over his own technical matters. He also currently has no plans to re-develop the app in Objective-C. Emanuele is not upset at Atari or Apple, he just thinks it's unlucky. And I thought it might make for a bit of interesting discussion if people were so inclined, as Haunted House the game goes softly into the dark night.

So if you are interested in this app, this is your last chance. If not, then perhaps we can all take this rarely witnessed opportunity to say goodbye to an app we may have never known. Sure it happens everyday in the App Store, but we rarely get to hear about it.

If you are interested in the app, then you should know that Haunted House the game is inspired by Bongo, a game designed by Emanuele's friend and fellow designer, Bruno Faidutti. Emanuele developed and rethemed it into Haunted House the game.

On the bright side, Emanuele has let us know that he'll be working on some upcoming iOS board games:

Emanuele Ornella wrote:
Maybe this is a good moment also to say that I'm actively working on an iOS version of Oz published by Ystari. Still I'm not sure when this will be released, but I'm close enough...

I'm also working on an easy Michael Schacht game and...I've talked with him about other games he designed...

That's certainly something to look forward to!

I think it's complete BS when this happens.

I should make a game called Haunted Edge House and piss off two name hoarders at the same time.

I saw a post that if you backup your iPad to the iCloud you may get iScrewed, note... I have a registered trademark and copyright on the word iScrewed, if you go to restore and the app as been removed from the store. The workaround, back it local on a PC. I am not sure if it is true. Got thinking about it, if I am Apple, why would I backup each user's apps? I have a record of your downloads, so just re-pull them from the store Anywho, let me know what happens if you have or get this and you do an iCloud restore.

Oh yeah, I am registering as a trademark the entire Webster Dictionary, so please reply soon.

If Emanuele wanted to fight, he could almost certainly win any infringement suit: "Haunted House" is not a particularly distinctive mark. But, of course, not everybody has the time or the resources to fight.

The REALLY unfortunate part of this is that the app will be pulled solely due to the inability to make a name change. That is crazy.

Another reason boardgames should not be considered "video games".

The medium is different, but that is all.

Um, what? Does anyone else find this weird?

What, he destroyed all source of the app the moment he sent it to the store? His computer can only run one app at a time? Installing Objective C erases all presence of Flash?

Maybe you missed the part where I said:

Yeah, it's weird. But maybe he doesn't have the license for flash development any more? And so it's not as simple as re-compiling.
