Introducing 011, a game and art project combined

Paolo Vallerga has released a number of games through his own company Scribabs that pay as much attention to the graphics and art as they do to the game design, Star System or Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas being two such examples.

The next release from Scribabs – due out in October 2011 at Spiel, with rules in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch – will feature another blending of art and design: 011 from Marco Valtriani. Here's an overview of the game: "011 is a study of 1800s esotericism in a steampunk setting that involves the Swedish symphonic metal band Therion." And in case that summary only whets your appetite, here's a longer write-up:

Quote:
011 is set in a ucronic time, during an undefined "year 011". The world can be described as an alternate version of the 19th century. Science is deeply bound with esotericism, as many religions and creeds coexist with philosophies and convictions in a cauldron of cultures and ideals that is both challenging and frightening at the same time.

Events take place in Turin. Turin, everyone knows, is a magical town. To be precise, Turin has the highest concentration of mystical energies on the whole planet, as it's the only city belonging to both the black magic triangle – with London and San Francisco – and the white magic triangle, with Prague and Lyon.

A cold and long winter is raging: Three years ago the snow started to fall and never stopped. The Fimbulvetr of the Norse legends is ending and so Ragnarök is coming. Eight brilliant scientists discover the lost tome of the "Edda", which explains that the only way to stop Ragnarök is to discover a man whose future is completely obscure, a man called the Chosen One. The Chosen One must play a Mystical Song with the magical Pipe Organ hidden somewhere in the city, or the world as we know it will end.

But Ragnarök can also be a new beginning for the righteous ones! One of the investigators opens his soul to Fenrir's spirit, and from that moment he works in the name of the Wolf God to discover the Chosen One. Killing him will let Ragnarök start and will grant to this man an eternal life in the Gimlé!

How does Therion tie into the game? The members of the band, including founder Christofer Johnsson, play the part of protagonists in the game, and they're so involved that in June 2011 they will create a video – written by Paolo Vallerga and made by Silos Production – in which the band performs as their alter egos in the game.

1811, a steampunk past reminding the novels of Jules Verne, where all transport technology relies on steam. Pneumatic systems allow the survival of the city in the winter that lasts since 3 years.

8 mysterious characters arrived from the north in Turin to stop the awakening of Fenrir, but only one is the Chosen one who can really stop it. They have 12 hours to succeed. They must find where is hidden the pipe organ and the Chosen one must play the melody that will put back Fenrir to sleep.

One of the 8 characters will discover midway through the game that he is the incarnation of Fenris. He will then try to prevent the Chosen one to discover the organ and play the melody.

The 8 characters will move on the map of Turin, using all kind of steam-based transport (trains, boats, planes, lifts).

The characters will have to :
- identify who is the Chosen one.
- compose a melody
- discover the organ's location
- thwart the team's mission if the traitor.

Yet again with the 1800's esotericism themes. Can't they come up with any new themes?

I'm not against real photos in games (see any Sports game - something like MLB Showdown).

EDIT: Nevermind, I see what you're saying.

Gotta give'em props for originality, but the whole thing just seems a bit goofy to me.

I do love Therion, however. They're on my playlist of music I listen to while gaming.

Hmmmm... This is not really Esotericism... but maybe plus an adventure in Jules Verne style in a fantastic world.

"When the lost book of Edda (The edda of Snorry) was found, 8 scientist of the north legends discover the story of the mighty pipe organ... and discover how to stop the Fenrir's Awake..."

Strange to see Therion involved with a game... I haven't listened to them in a long time... like a very long time...

They were always pretty interesting though. Eclipsed by plenty of new bands.

I all of a sudden have a wish that Devil Doll will return and involve themselves with a board game... now that would be sweet. (although, I bet this is cool too).

I'm not automatically opposed to real images in games (I like Flying Frog's art style), but for me, that particular card just looks... off.

Everything else looks so fantastic, with great graphic design for all of the other elements, and then it looks like some guy on 4chan badly photoshopped a photo in place of the 'real' portrait that was supposed to be there.

What about "doesn't bother me either way, so long as the artwork is done well and fits with the rest of the artwork in the game"? I'm neither absolutely for, neither am I totally against.

My problem isn't with images of real people but with publishers "that pay as much attention to the graphics and art as they do to the game design". In my experience, the game design suffers in such efforts. Hopefully, that will not be the case here.

The poll is about using photos of people in game components. The poll is not about whether the game represents the actual person in the photo.

I don't know about no one, but yes, I could see how some people would consider historical figures a separate case. Or perhaps even the more general case I mentioned above.

Ah, in that case, I agree that the photo above looks a little goofy, but I am not opposed to it in general.

I think some games use them well though, like Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game. And in some cases, like Star Wars Customizable Card Game, it would have looked kind of dumb if they didn't use movie stills.

You need a real artist to make photography succeed in a game unless you're going for a campy look, otherwise you're better off using a good graphic designer.

I take this answer just because is the last one...

Premise:
Normally I don't write too much on BGG. I don't know how and when answer at people and the time to write is really thin.

The artwork is work in progress, i will read any information and suggestion, but I'm an artist. Since 1999 i publish boardgames like editor, like graphic designer and like author. Why? Because I love my work. I love to decide the style, the colors the concept... See my Star System or SATOR Game on BGG: ambitious and controversial projects... but I love them. This is the Scribabs style. When you write "You need a real artist"... ah ah ah... I laugh.
I'm a real artist... if you don't like my work, it's ok, I'll pay you a beer the first time we met: no harm, no foul. I don't claim that you should love my work... but I'm a real artist, in any case.... (and I pay too many Beers!)

So... "011" is not only an artwork to see in a museum, is a fantastic boardgame (obviously is my editor opinion). I would like you can play it ... this will happen asap, I hope.

I would like write some words about the question: "to be (photos) or not to be (photos)"... but I have stolen too many time to you, I come back to my cavern.

Sincerely.

I'm glad to have some information about the game. I saw some photos of it in one of the Nurnberg write ups, but there was no information other than the title. I enjoy Sator Arepo, so I'll be interested to see how this game develops.

Just to avoid to copy and paste stuff around BGG, if everyone is interested, I posted some notes about the mechanics and the relationship between Theme and Mechanics here.

Eclipsed? I don't know many bands who do what Therion does. (Haggard comes the closest.) Course, when you say that you haven't listened to them in a long time, then they might have been a completely different band.

My understanding is the game designer approached them about making a game. While steampunk has been overdone, combining it with some Norse mythology makes it a bit more interesting. As always, we wait and see if it actually makes for a good game.

I do think it is too bad that they seemed to recycle photos from the new album, tho.

Hallo, Jason this is understandable... To realize a new photoset I musted walk around the world, from Argentina (Mr. Vidal) to Sweden, running between USA (Mrs. Lewis)...He he he... Too High for my budget and for the game price... But I have no use only the Photoset of the last Album... The image on the box was really perfect for my game's Idea and so I used it... the others are work in progress... for example realizing the "Captain Snowy" I work in another way realizing some objects that I need: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=1078492744&aid=2086143

About the story, I write a novel in "Jules Verne Style", mixing our town, Norse Mithology, Steam, adventures, and "Around the World in Eighty Days"... and the game is based on that. Is a really strange things that the faces of the characters was Therion's members... The Idea came me because I'm a Fans..
