Fantasy Flight Games' Line-up for February 2012

U.S. publisher Fantasy Flight Games has announced a short list of titles for release in February 2012, including its new version of Richard Hamblen's Merchant of Venus, which was announced in late October 2011 in the wake of Stronghold Games announcing a reprint of the title. (More details on the initial situation in this BGG News post, with an update on the situation in mid-November from Stronghold's Kevin Nesbitt.)

Now FFG has put an expected release date on the game (February 2012), a price tag ($60), and a list of the alien races to be included in the game: Human, Whynom, Qossuth, and Eeepeeep. No other details yet on the "expanding game play...that will cause even the most hardcore fan to celebrate."

The only other non-RPG releases from FFG for February 2012 are three expansions for Living Card Games:

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game - Trial by Combat
Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game - Written and Bound
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game - Road to Rivendell

Also, FFG notes that the second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Board Game has now shipped to U.S. distributors and stores and should be available for purchase.

You missed an "e" there. goo Don't want to offend them by misspelling their race's name.

Have I missed the discussion on this? I'm concerned that the MoV "kick into hyperspace" will involve the deplorable practice of re-releasing a 6-p game as a 4-p one and then selling expansion packs (including the 6-p expansion pack, the "additional races" expansion pack and the "ship upgrades pack") to milk the cash cow.

Anybody want to take a 50bag bet that this is what will happen? (Apologies in advance to the Admins if I just broke a rule)

I want this game soooooo badly; I just wish Stronghold were publishing it. (This from an Arkham Horror fan, so obviously I like expansions and FFG games - I never said I wasn't a hypocrite)

I was interested in both Rex and Wiz-War (eighth edition), but the latter also seems to have slipped to Q1 2012 on the Upcoming page. (But if it's not on the menu for February, there's not much Q1 left...)

FFG does not typically issue new sell sheets for a game with a revised release date, so either or both of those games could appear anytime during Q1 2012 – unless the date is further revised, of course.

I appreciate with this post (I will not bet), but did you ever play MoV with 6p?

I tried it for two times, and it was not really satisfying....too long, too much downtime.

The question is, what else FFG will design to make this game better....(I think of some new rules, the game material is not important for this game to be "new")

Excuse my bad english, I´m out of school for a long long timegulp

They could be milking the "affordability cow" instead you know.

A: Having 6p in the base game will increase costs considerably. It's already priced at 60. They will lose massive numbers of sales if it sold at 80 - enough that the game may be a complete flop as a result.

B: Not everyone who gets the game wants or needs 6p. Someone else has already said they hate the original as 6p. A lot of people may never have more than 4 players at a time, making the extra 2 players (and $20+ cost) a waste for them.

Doing it this way makes it sell better overall, gives those who want 6p the option, and reduces the financial burden on everyone.

If it has more components, it's going to cost more, plain and simple.
Your argument seems to be an objection to having to pay more as 2 transactions instead of just one... which is illogical.

Based on what I saw FFG do with Cosmic Encounter I think you may be making a poor bet there. They jammed everything and the kitchen sink into their version when they could have easily skipped the alternate version of Filch, scaled the aliens from 50 to 40 or less, and have left out the tech cards as well.

So there might be cause to hope that they include everything you're hoping for in their version.

Again, this is FFG, OF COURSE they are only doing this to sell overpriced expansions. Can anyone look at their track record and honestly say this is not what they're probably going to do again here?

I look at their track record and see a company who puts out the best value for money games in the business.
If you don't like it go buy an old copy with it's 6 players and cheap flimsy chits.

Oh man, this looks great! I love merchant trading games and am working on my own for the NaGa DeMon right now. My game is heavily inspired from the old TRS-80 merchant trading game Taipan from the early 80's. Right now the game is called Taipan -Merchants of the Far East, but I may change the theme once I am done with it.

Recently I played Merchants and Marauders and loved it. I am sure this game will not disappoint. Cant wait.

If you are interested, I have documented much of the development of my game here: http://warprime.blogspot.com/

I am also posting select Blogs here on my BGG Blog.

And Descent Second Ed.

Since several other items in their Upcoming list have "Q1 2012", it makes one wonder what "Early 2012" means. Obviously not January or February.

I'm sorry, but when I look at FFG's track record, I fail to see where they sell "overpriced expansions." I don't know why people view expansions as something that should have been in the base game.

The Horned Rat expansion for CitOW definitely wasn't overpriced or something that should have been in the base game. The Cosmic expansions have been great value for the price, IMO. It's difficult to argue even expansions which "fixed" games should have been crammed in a base game. Are you saying Twilight Imperium didn't have enough in the box for it's price?

Personally, I like how FFG is making their games under $60 for something playable, and fun. And if I buy it at that price, because I can afford it, and play it, and enjoy it, I'm more likely to buy a $25 or $35 expansion to add to it, whereas if it were included in the base game making it $90, I'd probably never buy it initially and find out if I like it.

You see it as "milking us," I see it as being affordable.

Why would it add $20 to the cost to ship six players in the box? This isn't something like Civilization or Twilight Imperium where you need to add board pieces, special components in the new color, etc- what you need to add a new MoV player is a pawn, a reference card, and ship cards. FFG's renditions of these will certainly be fancier than Avalon Hill's, but I don't see them being that big a difference.

It depends on the ships. And tiny plastic ships are very expensive in mass production. Especially if FFG goes all out and sculpts different ships for each race. of.

My best guess is it's dead for FFG, as a third and last expansion should have been announced by now.

The gap between the Pegasus and Exodus was over a year and it has been less than a year since Exodus. I expect we will see the season 4 expansion (Daybreak?) this summer.
