New Game Round-up: Burgundy Comes to U.S. Shores, Spell Combos Lead to Epicness & Become a Soldier in Omen

• Ravensburger is now distributing a number of its titles directly in the U.S. instead of going through licensing partners, and it expects English-only versions of Asara and Sealand to be available in January 2012. The Castles of Burgundy is being released in an English/French version (unlike the previous trilingual edition), and Ravensburger's Anka Schmollinger notes, "We just received stock of The Castles of Burgundy so that should be available a little bit sooner than the rest." (Actually The Castles of Burgundy is already available on Amazon.com, so it should be available through other retailers soon.)

• Speaking of Ravensburger, the company has released Electronic Labyrinth in the U.S., but the game is currently available only at Barnes & Noble bookstore. (B&N lists the publication date of the game as Sept. 29, 2011, but I first saw the game in store the first week of December. In any case, thought I'd mention this game's release for those not eager to wander the German labyrinth.) Anka Schmollinger says that the game will be available through other retail outlets starting in January 2012.

• Asmadi Games has posted English rules (PDF) for Aaron Belmer's Sanitarium. (Note that the rules are not final as they currently lack illustrations and play diagrams.)

Zombicide, a cooperative game of zombie fighting that includes ten scenarios and modular map boards that allow for more, is the first title from Guillotine Games and due to debut at Gen Con in August 2012.

• Cryptozoic Entertainment has created a special game for twelve-year-old Eric Martin and others who want to relive their glorious days of youth immersed in the D&D Player's Handbook with little thought of, you know, actually playing the game. In Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre, you create three-card spell combinations in order to blast opponents into tiny, bite-sized pieces – not that such destruction will necessarily stop them, however, as Dead Wizard cards can keep the disembodied in the game to mess with those still living.

• Cryptozoic has also announced a Q2 2012 release date for Food Fight: Snack Attack, a forty-card expansion for its Food Fight card game with more punny names and special-powered food.

• Jolly Roger Games has gone to print with a second edition of Founding Fathers from Jason Matthews and Christian Leonard, with the changes being better card stock, fewer typos (and ideally none, of course), and one changed rule, as noted by artist Josh Cappel. JRG's Jim Dietz says that he'll have one hundred extra card decks available (for $1.50 plus shipping) for anyone who wants to upgrade their first edition copy of the game. Dietz says if all goes well, the game will be available on February 1, 2012.

• Mayday Games expects to receive a reprint of Eaten By Zombies! the week of December 12, 2011.

• Want more twists for your Agricola games? Then coat the wooden pieces with LSD. No, don't do that – instead randomly draw one of the Agricola Ereigniskarten (event cards) at the start of the game to change the playing conditions for everyone. These cards were released one by one at German gaming events throughout 2011, and while the cards are in German and tough to come by, you can just handwrite your own and get back to licking the wooden pieces without delay.

• More board and card game projects on Kickstarter:

–Designer John Clowdus has turned to KS for the second edition of Omen: A Reign of War (Small Box Games, KS link), with levels of just the extra bits for those who already have the game, the complete package for those just discovering Michael “Riiven” Ng's sweet art, and a special level at which you can have your likeness painted on a Soldier card. Personally I'd like to get this for my son just to see what a three-year-old soldier would look like...

–Vanessa Simek has the two-player dice game Bare Your Fangs (KS link) in which players finally (no, not really) settle the long-standing conflict between whether vampires or werewolves are better able to open a tin can with their chompers. I expect to see snakes in the expansion, then perhaps my friend Craig Maher, whose eyeteeth are more fanglike than anyone else's I've ever seen.

–Designer Elizabeth Northcutt presents Lunch Box (KS link), "a patent pending, educator recommended children's health and fitness board game that has been in development since 2007". Uh oh. "Lunch Box reaches out to our children through a fun and educational board game, bringing health and fitness back to the forefront of their daily lives." Oh my. "This game is so much FUN you will not even realize that you just learned what a 'Whole Food' is and which foods are the best choices for you to live a Healthy Lunch Box Lifestyle!" Oh, good gravy - really? That old canard? You'll be having so much fun that you won't even notice we've extracted your appendix!

I can't stand this type of marketing speak, as if it's impossible to present meaningful and useful information about health and nutrition to youngsters in a way that sticks with them without first luring them into a bear trap of fun and excitement. Saturday morning cartoon producers would always make similar arguments about providing life lessons and model ways of living because Goober the Gopher took a bite of apple before burying his enemies in a mountain of dirt. Ridiculous. Are we really going to have a game like this presented to kids with a straight face, especially when corporate sponsors can buy a spot on the game board for $10k? Oh, wait, the Kickstarter goal is $130,000 for 3,000 copies of the game. Nevermind – we'll never see this in print. Carry on...

Lemonade Stand, from designer Trevor Cram and Mayday Games (KS link), has the look of 1970s Schoolhouse Rock! with adorable little munchkins doing ever-so-precious childlike things like playing jacks and yes, running a lemonade stand. The KS project has many details of the game play.

–Now this is an odd one, "this" being a Kickstarter project for Terra Evolution from Mindwarrior Games, specifically for "one of only 275 copies of the game left in circulation worldwide". Mayday Games is the company hosting this KS project, which is essentially a preorder system along the lines of what Mayday tried to do with Kingdom Builder in September 2011. The games have already been produced and are apparently in transit to the U.S. as the anticipated availability date is January 2012. I recall that Mindwarrior Games sold out of English-language copies of Terra Evolution at Spiel 2011, but apparently it had extra copies in the warehouse back home or otherwise not handy during that convention. In any case, here it is.

I'd guess not, but I'll prod the PR person to see what she says.

This is great news! Although I suspect a large contingent of the games' potential customers have moved on.

One would expect them to have learned from the outcry over the Kingdom Builder debacle, too. Really, Mayday Games? Really?

Just put a preorder on your website instead of abusing Kickstarter with this stuff, guys. It's not like you don't have the backend to sell things that way.

It's bollocks. Mayday is claiming:

Quote:

Mayday Games has the only copies of Terra Evolution left. We are making them available exclusively on Kickstarter!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/maydaygames/terra-evolut...

If this takes off we will be able to release it nationwide in 2012.

They cannot possibly be the only copies left (oh look, two copies available via BGG itself).

Certainly hope the people behind the game know what they are getting themselves into with Seth Hiatt...

Something useful (Castles of Burgundy spotted in the Amazon), LSD coated animeeples, a Rug Rats reference about a small mammal that bites an apple before burying his foes under a mountain of dirt, and the word canard shortly after the phrase 'good gravy'? And would you believe I actually missed the word 'eyeteeth' on the first read through?

Almost makes me glad I can't sleep because of a miserable cold tonight. So much funnier when you're tired and a little cranky.

Makes me think of this.

Either their production costs are through the roof which makes no sense if they're claiming MSRP should be $40. I do love how the mere first edition status warrants $10 MSRP increase though.

By rational standards, their production costs should be a mere $24,000 or so.

We should all be thankful that another roll-and-move trivia question "educational" monstrosity will never see the light of day.

Darn, right after I paid for an imported copy of Die Burgen von Burgund. I didn't think they'd get this distributed in the U.S. so quickly.

Ideally Gone Cardboard will provide information that minimizes such "accidents" in the future.

Vaguely related to Burgundy, what ever happened to all those wine games that were supposed to come out last year? Vinhos, Grand Cru, Toscana, and I think another? I guess they were hit by the 2010 production snafu, but where are they?

Psst. Sealand is something entirely different than Seeland.

Burgund has 14 on the spine, I see no reason for the 2nd edition not to have it.

I've got a copy of Vinhos and according to bgg so do at least another 1,100, unless you mean a domestic edition?

Also, FWIW, if you're going to order this - you might as well do it straight from Funagain.

Though I don't know for sure, usually Amazon takes a cut off the top from the true seller when the game is purchased off Amazon.com...

So, if you're going to support Funagain - it would be better to order direct from the Funagain website so that they can keep getting in games that you want to buy. Especially, since in this case, there wouldn't be any difference in cost to you, and you'll keep a bit more of your funds within our gaming community.

The same argument holds true for any retailer, not just Funagain, that has its wares distributed via Amazon.

Just my 2 cents.

and, to be fair, I have no stake in either amazon or funagain...

Yeah. At first I thought this was just a typing error on the pitching team's part. $13,000 sounds do-able. That last zero kills it.

The only other explanation is that they're using Kickstarter to bankroll its entire marketing campaign AND project team salaries.

Curt, this is what will eventually thin out the Kickstarter mania. Between this fiasco and Mayday Games, the hucksters are coming out in force. There's a difference between young publishers wanting to see bonafide games hit the market... and semi-professionals abusing the system to milk money where they can.

For whatever it's worth, the absence of protest by Mindwarrior on Mayday's KS campaign for Terra Evolution, I don't think it's unreasonable to venture that Mayday's description of the campaign, as an entree to them bringing the game over to the US as a separate printing, is accurate.

Seth's posted that the success of the campaign has them working on contracts for the US rights. If it's not true, someone should speak up.

I played the PnP game and liked it very much. After not getting burned on Get Bit and Eaten by Zombies, two other Mayday projects, I was comfortable supporting TE on Kickstarter so I could get a copy.

How would "Seeland" be any better in English? Wouldn't the public at large stare at this compound word and say, "Hunh?" just as much as they would at "Sealand"?

I *just* bought the German releases of Seeland and Burgen von Burgund, at an import price. Sigh.

Yep. Although I'm glad I have had them for awhile and have gotten in some plays. Great games.

You know, I was halfway thinking of getting in on the Kickstarter for Omen, but the different levels of supporters and rewards is far too confusing. If they can't make those options clear, I don't trust they can make the game or rules clear, either. So, pass.

the lunch box game has a crazy audacious goal of $130K, and has gotten only $600 so far. its a garish roll and move educational game by an outsider to the boardgame industry, and they intend to raise enough money for MSRP for the entire initial print run of 3000 games via KS (not the COSTS for 3000 copies as a goal). I guess they dont plan to sell any via other means after? Seems this will crash and burn hard, unless they attract educational investors etc.

its like passing a wicked car wreck you cant help but watch...

If you would like to read the designer's justifications for the amount asked you can refer to this Geek List item.

Lunch Box

Apparently she isn't used to people offering their unsolicited opinions on the internet (you'd better watch out Eric, you may feel her wrath next).

edit - she obviously feels very strongly about her project but I'm of the opinion that this isn't going to work. No game is going to change a kid's eating habits (well, maybe World of Warcraft, but that's more likely to induce starvation and deep vein thrombosis).

I think what Seth has done with Terra Evolution is purely paying his expenses on the first batch he ordered from us to States. So I believe Seth did the kickstarter mainly for marketing / buzz purposes. These are not facts, just based on what we have talked with him about the future distribution of our games in the US.

It is true that Mayday Games pretty much bought the whole batch of English games we had left in our warehouse for the marketing / starting of the sales.

We are now drafting the distribution / license contract with Mayday Games and are planning the production of around 3000 copies in the North American market at first. We will produce a smaller batch of the first expansion as well during the same time to lower the production costs a bit.

Mayday Games will be our main distributor in US for Terra Evolution and other upcoming releases, or should we say "master distributor / manufacturer" rather than talk just distribution. We will not be doing the traditional licensing though, so it's not that simple either. Hope this cleared things just a bit.

There will also be around 1000 copy Japanese version marketed by Arclight in Japan, but these print runs will happen in around January / February.

Ravensburger is now distributing a number of its titles directly in the U.S. instead of going through licensing partners, and it expects English-only version of... Sealand to be available in January 2012.

Any further word on this?
