The Battle of Megiddo ca. 1479 BCE

First off, let's just link to the session report Megiddo (aka Finally Some Chariots To Play WIth).

One of the purposes of the blog for me is finding the right balance between enough notes to write a good report and to not impede play overly much. As you can see from the session report the notes here were somewhat scarce.

This was my first real experience with the chaos of the activation system in Chariots of Fire impacting the game. For the most part I appreciate the added chaos.

This was also the first time I got to play with Chariots both with and without their stalwart companions the runner infantry. The runner infantry assisted Egyptian chariots were my first attempt at using them, and it was rather clumsy. Figuring out the puzzle of chariot/runner infantry tactics turned out to be one of my favorite bits of playing through Chariots of Fire.

As mentioned in the session report, I also think the activation rules for the Egyptian reserve are problematic. A simple solution is to use the rules presented in the scenario book, but upon an enemy moving adjacent, activate the reserve division in question as if the roll had just been made. It keeps them form being too easy to use for the Egyptians while also keeping them form being "free points" for the Syrians while they just stand there and twiddle their thumbs.

Also as mentioned in the session report the revised rout rules for Syria in this led to the oddities of almost no units actually being destroyed. They just all went and hid in the city. They're out of the game, but Egypt gets no RP for them. If enough rout to the city Egypt is left with a very steep hill to climb to achieve victory. Over a series of lays I'm sure this balances out, but in my play it was pretty rough. Perhaps award half rout points for those that end up hiding in Megiddo?
