• "Morning Edition", a radio program on U.S. public radio network NPR, interviewed designer Rob Daviau to talk about Risk: Legacy. An excerpt:

Quote:
"Why do board games always start over?" Daviau says. "They have no memory — it's like Groundhog Day. What if there was a way to make a board game sort of remember one game to the next, so it became an ongoing narrative rather than a series of isolated events?"

• And Risk: Legacy was also featured in the San Francisco Chronicle's annual round-up of new games. While aimed at the casual newspaper reader, the Chronicle's suggestions have been anything but mainstream. Games that merited the prized "jumpy man" include Haggis, The Resistance, Cargo Noir, Pantheon, Automobile (!), and the aforementioned Risk: Legacy. (For the record, I worked in a game store in San Francisco from 1991 to 1994, and our store gave games each year to Mick LaSalle, a movie critic who also wrote the game round-up.)

• Designer Jay Cormier and Sen-Foong Lim have released a print-and-play version of But Wait, There's More!, a party game in which you pitch wacky products to the other players as the game was initially under contract with a publisher, but then released back to the designers once an "eerily similar" version of the game was announced from someone else.

• Designer Matt Tolman has posted a trilogy of videos on BGG demonstrating how he makes multiple prototypes quickly and relatively easy – once you get those pesky ol' "what is my game about and how do we play it" questions out of the way.

• Wrapping presents for the gamer in your life? Steve Jackson Games has downloadable Munchkin and "illuminated eye" tags and gift cards, if those would be your thing or the thing of the one receiving the present.

• For another take on gaming gifts, albeit something that won't be delivered until January 2012, how about chocolate dice, specifically the familiar six-die set from Dungeons & Dragons of old with a d20, d12, d10, d8, d6 and d4. The Kickstarter project behind the dice includes a FAQ that covers topics not normally an issue for those handling dice, such as "Are the dice vegan or lactose or dairy friendly?"

• German publisher 2F-Spiele has released a downloadable playmat (PDF) for Friedemann Friese's Friday to help you organize everything during play.

Moonster Games and Cocktail Games are holding a game-naming contest (read: marketing opportunity/PR) for a joint release from the two French publishers. What's the game about? Scary, ghastly oogly-boogly monsters have landed on Earth and are ready to start a wave of terror among the native population – but alas on this planet they are tiny little things and not scary at all. Players need to catch these monsters, who have unfortunately landed in your house where you are ready to swat them. the winner of the name-this-game contest gets a collector's edition of Gosu and a handful of Cocktail titles.

• Hamish Sterling and his Pocket Cricket – no, not a bug, ya little wisenheimer – are briefly profiled in The Cairns Post (AU). One interesting tidbit for those interested in producing their own games. Pocket Cricket consists of a drawbag, rules, and a handful of dice and as Sterling notes in the news article, "It's cost us $4,500 all up, including the website."

• Want to know the value of your collection of board and card games – or at least the replacement cost of most items in it? Probably not, unless you have the smelling salts handy, but should you be so bold you can head to BGGtools.com, which is not associated with BGG, enter your BGG username, then watch and wait for the total to spring up and melt your eyeballs. My total, minus the 225 games that have never been sold in the BGG marketplace (oh, and the few dozen games acquired at Spiel 2011 and not yet entered, and ...): nearly $22k. (HT: FatherGeek.com)

That estimator is pretty nifty, but my wife would just say my collection is "worthless", and then soundly kick my butt playing Nexus Ops or something (^_-). And THAT's priceless.

I just read about But Wait, There's More! yesterday. I thought it was fairly similar to Get Paul That Promotion, but the BGG entry for the latter does not indicate that it is being published. I can only imagine that someone else also had a Billy Mays idea simultaneously.

For the amount of money it would cost to print the Friday playmat in good quality, I could probably buy another copy of the game itself whistle Thankfully the game plays very well without it. It's a neat little take on the popular deckbuilding mechanic, by the way, and it's refreshingly hard.

That tool says my collection is about $12k, with 40 "no data" entries. Which is terrifying considering I only started boardgaming in '09.

I am not sure how accurate the pricing is though, it listed Axis and Allies 50th Anniversary at $164, at which price I would by 5 copies immediately.

For the BGG data it appears to look at the historical sales in the Marketplace to acquire a value. This can be pretty misleading for games whose value has changed dramatically over time.

Oh, and I'm only just under $1300 for my 79 games. I must be very self-disciplined

EDIT: wait, something's wrong. It shows Birds on a Wire with a "New" price of $90.5, while "Like New" is $6.00 and 'Very Good' is $3.00. Obviously that's not right - maybe "New" should be $9, not $90.

Yeah it has War of the Ring Collectors Ed listed at 670 bucks! They routinely sell for 1000 - 1300 each and someone is asking 5000 on ebay right now for it, thoguh I doubt they will get any takers for that much. There is one on there right now for 735 bucks with a few days on it so I figure it will go for over a 1000 when it is all over so I think you are right when you say this is misleading for anyone who has lots of OOP and inport stuff in their collection.

That said this does give a nice baseline figure to work from for estimation.

Anyone wanna by a copy of scrabble? I'm selling them for 20% off and Buy 1, Get 1 Free...according to the estimator, that means you can have 2 copies for $36 which is $9 less than the price of 1. whistle

Seriously though, the estimator is pretty cool as a guide to valuing your collection. And for those Excel slappies like myself, to get the data into Excel cleanly, just highlight and copy the table and paste it into Excel. It'll look like crap so then highlight the new Excel table, copy, and "PASTE VALUES" to a separate sheet. It cleans it up nicely.

I'd point out what a great tool that is for Americans with homeowner's or renter's insurance - should you (God forbid) have your collection stolen or destroyed, this assessment tool could be used to submit a claim.

It's also tricky for things with multiple editions- my copy of RoboRally is one of the early editions with pewter robots and no "starting line" board, which given the price of the expansions would probably go for a bit more than the newest version.

How does the Estimator deal with CCGs? You could have one game marked as owned, but its value could wildly vary depending on which cards you own.

All it does is look at sales data on BGG and prices for currently-available games on Thoughthammer – which means the CCG prices could be all over the place depending on how BGG users have sold cards in the past.

The original The Big Idea has been out for years. If they consider it "eerily similar," perhaps they should have done better market research?

For the record, most party games seem to be eerily similar to me. I applaud any designer who can come up with something in the genre that feels fresh.

Not surprisingly, my collection is only listed as being worth about $3500. Of course, I have none of my extras for Heroscape listed, just one entry to show whether or not I have the thing. Also not surprising is that Heroscape is my most valuable stuff though the most valuable single item is Space Hulk 3rd edition.

An interesting widget, if a bit of a self-indulgent thing to use.
