Day 8 of the December Challenge and it is Melissa's turn to pick a game off of our challenge list. She chose Qwirkle.

Qwirkle is yet another abstract game that I find appealing. Nice thick wooden tiles and the layout is attractive. (The orange and red colors are a bit too similar for my aging eyes, especially in less than bright light.) I rate Qwirkle a 9 and this is our 20th recorded play on BGG.

Everyone knows how to play so we all jump right in. My son takes the early lead with the first Qwirkle but soon begins to falter. Melissa takes a turn to switch out her tiles, which proves beneficial as she immediately gets some high scoring turns. My daughter and I pull into the lead however and we keep going back and forth with Melissa and my son hot on our heels.

With 2 turns left, I hold a slim 1 point lead over my daughter and a 10 point lead over Melissa. I score 9, but Melissa immediately scores 16 to pull within 3 points. My daughter scores 7 so she is also 3 back while my son is out of the race.

The final turn I'm able to get a Qwirkle and score 14 for 123. My wife would have gotten the same Qwirkle if I didn't grab it first. She went out scoring 5 plus the 6 point bonus. My daughter showed us that if she would have gotten her turn then she would have a gotten a Qwirkle and won the game.

Final Scores: Larry 123, Melissa 117, Daughter 106, Son 90.

I was really interested in this and was going to buy it for my son but he said he didn't want it, maybe I will get it anyhow. I am quite intrigued by it and it sounds good.

It's a difficult game to "sell" to kids because it's so abstract, but I think most kids like it. It's one of my favorites.

One of my gaming friends brought it to game night a while back and we squeezed in a game between games. I heard about it her on BGG and wanted to see what it was all about... nice game.

...today I was wrapping up my Christmas shopping and as is habit I take a stroll through the game isle not expecting much from the tyipcal big box store and saw this on sale... so I bought it. Got a small chewing from the wife but after she played it, she was feeling better about buying yet another game.

My odlest daughter then wanted to play and later tonight my youngest wants to play. Good game, looking forward to playing it some more.
